SUMMARY:Paintings\, Politics and the Monuments Men: The Berlin Masterpieces in America
DESCRIPTION:From the Nazis’ exploitation of artworks to the protection and restitution efforts of the “Monuments Men\,” art and politics were frequently intertwined in the World War II era. \nThis exhibition focuses on the fate of 200 of the finest European paintings from the Berlin State Museums that traveled to the United States soon after the end of the war and were exhibited at fourteen museums across the country before returning to Germany. Longtime Cincinnatian and supporter of the arts\, Captain Walter Farmer led the Monuments Men’s protest against the paintings’ controversial transfer from Germany. Featuring paintings that made the journey\, alongside artworks and historical material from the Cincinnati Art Museum and other lenders\, the exhibition delves into the complex role of artworks in a time of social upheaval and war\, and highlights the importance of tracing the movements and uses of cultural treasures.

SUMMARY:Future Retrieval: Katie Parker & Guy Michael Davis
DESCRIPTION:Future Retrieval\, the studio collaboration of Cincinnati-based artists Katie Parker and Guy Michael Davis\, appropriates imagery and forms from historical objects to create new art that bears meaning in our twenty-first century world. Their practice is rooted in ceramic art\, but also incorporates a diverse mix of media and techniques combine age-old methods with new technologies. This exhibition will take over two museum galleries as project spaces that look back at the past and move into the future by unconventionally responding to objects “borrow” from the museum’s decorative art and design collection. In pairing their own work with objects from the museum’s collection\, the artists will create an environment and experience that encourage visitors to consider of reconsider aspects of the museum’s historical collections and practices in a new light.

SUMMARY:Anila Quayyum Agha: All the Flowers are for Me
DESCRIPTION:The museum will once again present Anila Agha: All The Flowers are for Me. The popular exhibition\, first displayed in 2017\, features Pakistani-American artist Anila Quayyum Agha who creates immersive installation by manipulating lights. Light emanates from the center of a laser-cut steel cube\, enveloping the gallery in intricate shadows that ripple and change as you walk through the space. Inspired by Islamic architectural forms and referencing her experience as a diaspora artist\, the geometric and floral patterns cast upon the walls\, floor\, and ceiling creates a sense of belonging through shared experience and social distancing.

Art from across Europe\, North America\, Africa and Asia in a range of mediums will be featured together\, including oil on canvas\, ceramic\, prints\, photography\, and fashion. SUMMARY:Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal…
DESCRIPTION:The Cincinnati Art Museum is honored to present the first major retrospective of leading contemporary artist Hank Willis Thomas (American\, b. 1976). Thomas’s bold\, thoughtful\, and deeply moving artwork asks us to see and challenge systems of inequality that are woven into the fabric of contemporary life\, leaving no doubt that art is an essential tool in ongoing struggle for social justice. Spanning nearly twenty-five years of Thomas’s exploration of everyday imagery and its consequences\, All Things Being Equal… demands that we look critically at our own society while reminding us that we have the power to speak\, listen\, hope\, and hold fast to joy. \nThe nearly 100 artworks in the exhibition include sculptures and multi-media works\, monumental textile works constructed from reclaimed prison uniforms and athletic jerseys\, photographs\, interactive video installations and public art projects. As a whole\, All Things Being Equal… reflects themes Thomas has examined throughout his career\, such as the human toll of gun violence\, the impact of corporate branding\, the roots and uses of notions of gender and race\, interconnected worldwide struggle for liberty and equality\, and the importance of participation—in experiences of art as well as in broader civic life. The exhibition also highlights Thomas’s mining of personal and public archives\, and his ability to reframe texts\, images and materials to connect historical moments of resistance to our lives today.
