SUMMARY:Hank Willis Thomas: All Things Being Equal…
DESCRIPTION:The Cincinnati Art Museum is honored to present the first major retrospective of leading contemporary artist Hank Willis Thomas (American\, b. 1976). Thomas’s bold\, thoughtful\, and deeply moving artwork asks us to see and challenge systems of inequality that are woven into the fabric of contemporary life\, leaving no doubt that art is an essential tool in ongoing struggle for social justice. Spanning nearly twenty-five years of Thomas’s exploration of everyday imagery and its consequences\, All Things Being Equal… demands that we look critically at our own society while reminding us that we have the power to speak\, listen\, hope\, and hold fast to joy. \nThe nearly 100 artworks in the exhibition include sculptures and multi-media works\, monumental textile works constructed from reclaimed prison uniforms and athletic jerseys\, photographs\, interactive video installations and public art projects. As a whole\, All Things Being Equal… reflects themes Thomas has examined throughout his career\, such as the human toll of gun violence\, the impact of corporate branding\, the roots and uses of notions of gender and race\, interconnected worldwide struggle for liberty and equality\, and the importance of participation—in experiences of art as well as in broader civic life. The exhibition also highlights Thomas’s mining of personal and public archives\, and his ability to reframe texts\, images and materials to connect historical moments of resistance to our lives today.

SUMMARY:Art in Bloom
DESCRIPTION:The theme for Art in Bloom 2019 is LIGHT! \nOver four days\, experience the beauty of glorious fresh flowers paired with the Cincinnati Art Museum’s fine art collection. Take part in many and varied special events\, family friendly activities\, docent-led tours\, plus conversations and demonstrations by curators and floral arrangers. \nCreating a dialogue between fine art and floral beauty\, over 80 arrangements from local garden clubs\, professional designers\, groups and individuals will be placed alongside selected paintings\, ceramics and sculptures. Each floral designer is challenged to create arrangements with live flowers that emphasize\, challenge and build upon elements and concepts within the selected work of art. \nThis is the tenth floral celebration\, held every other year\, at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Since 2001\, this event has celebrated the masterpieces in the museum’s permanent collection and allowed visitors to view and interpret them in a new way. \nArt in Bloom’s 2019 theme is “Light.” The featured work of art is In the Park by Frank Harmon Myers. The colorful oil painting presents an early twentieth-century view of the museum from Eden Park in an impressionistic style. \nFree and open to the public each day from 11 a.m.–5 p.m.  \nThe museum will close at 5 p.m. on Thursday\, October 17 for Midnight in the Garden. \nFor more information about Art in Bloom\, please contact the events staff at events@cincyart.org or (513) 639-2962.
