SUMMARY:Held Impermanence (Artists Select: Katherine Simóne Reynolds)
DESCRIPTION:The Clyfford Still Museum’s guest-curated exhibition\, Held Impermanence (Artists Select: Katherine Simóne Reynolds)\, illuminates multiple competing desires held in constant tension within the Museum. Organized by award-winning filmmaker\, artist\, and curator Katherine Simóne Reynolds\, the exhibition draws deeply on CSM’s collections. The exhibition runs from January 25–September 14\, 2025. \nAccording to Reynolds\, the collection testifies to Still’s ambitious attempt to keep his entire corpus intact. The commitment to the integrity of that body of work allows viewers to see not only the acclaimed masterpieces but also paintings made in painful transitions and others that bear the scars of time. Artworks change over time; their materials carry the stain of what conservators describe as inherent vice. Viewers see paintings that need to rest and heal\, bearing marks that suggest\, through their surfaces\, condition\, and textures\, metaphors of viscera\, bile\, and wounds. \nIn the Museum’s six largest galleries\, Reynolds’s exhibition asks viewers how they view healing over time\, respond with their bodies to this corpus\, and how they might approach Still’s achievements from a perspective that contends with his and their own senses of mortality—and with it\, a shared desire to hold impermanence. \nKatherine Simóne Reynolds is an artist\, scholar\, and curator who investigates emotional dialects and psychogeographies of Blackness within the Black Midwestern landscape. Her art physicalizes emotions and experiences through photo-based works\, film\, choreography\, sculpture\, and anxious writing practice. She has exhibited in national and international group and solo shows. \n  \nReynolds chose several paintings with condition issues to highlight the impact of conservation throughout the exhibition. She also selected a collection of archival photographs\, letters\, and notes to demonstrate the themes and emotions throughout the exhibition and two original archival objects. The Museum expands on exhibition content and Reynolds’ curatorial process in its free mobile guide on Bloomberg Connects. CSM also offers visitors two takeaway resources in the exhibition’s first gallery\, including Essays on Held Impermanence\, a companion booklet to the exhibition\, and Exploring Feelings and Art: A Family Guide. \nHeld Impermanence follows a chronological display of Still’s works in the Museum’s first three galleries.

SUMMARY:Awful Bigness
DESCRIPTION:Clyfford Still spent his childhood and adolescence in the West and saw how the boundless plains could offer generous bounty in times of plenty or pitilessly starve in dust and wind. In an interview\, he referred to that experience as one that taught him to respect the “awful bigness of the land\, the men and the machines.” In subsequent years\, he worked on an enormous scale\, and each time\, he had to confront the awful bigness of the vast expanse of blank canvas. \nOrganized by the Clyfford Still Museum’s associate curator\, Bailey Placzek\, in collaboration with CSM’s director\, Joyce Tsai\, Awful Bigness fills the Museum’s largest\, skylit galleries and celebrates Still’s biggest\, most ambitious works. This installation follows a chronological display of Still’s works in CSM’s first four rooms\, which overviews Still’s groundbreaking path to abstraction.

SUMMARY:You Select: A Community-Curated Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Since its opening ten years ago\, the Clyfford Still Museum has presented more than 950 works of art by Still in over thirty different exhibitions. Yet\, over two-thirds of the Museum’s art collection remains unseen to the world. In the culminating exhibition of CSM’s tenth anniversary celebration year\, You Select: A Community-Curated Exhibition hands the curatorial reins to art lovers from the surrounding Denver community and beyond. \nCSM asked art lovers from the Denver area and beyond to select works in five different categories for the exhibition through a voting platform on the Museum’s website. The categories represent five themes in Still’s work that represent moments when the artist’s environs were particularly influential. After an eight-week voting period\, CSM’s associate curator\, Bailey Placzek\, arranged the pieces that received the most votes on the walls of the Museum’s skylit galleries. \nYou Select is designed to foster far-reaching engagement and appreciation of Clyfford Still’s art and artistic legacy. Unbeknownst to many\, the City of Denver owns the more than 3\,000 art objects held at the Clyfford Still Museum. Still gifted his art to a public entity to share his life’s work with a wide and diverse audience. He believed that art was an expression for all of humanity to enjoy and share\, not just the art historians\, critics\, and so-called “art experts.” Like the artist himself\, CSM believes that there is valuable knowledge to gain about Still’s art and the power of abstraction from the surrounding communities and passionate individuals from around the world.

SUMMARY:Clyfford Still\, Art\, and the Young Mind
DESCRIPTION:Co-curated with children from six months old to age eight from across the Front Range\, the upcoming exhibition Clyfford Still\, Art\, and the Young Mind\, reveals how children think about art. Designed to engage both children and adults\, Young Minds will be on view from March 11 to August 7\, 2022 at the Clyfford Still Museum (CSM). \nThe Museum’s first four galleries chart the artistic journey of Clyfford Still in a chronological narrative\, and includes artworks selected with families and children in mind and hung lower on the walls to account for the height of young visitors. The remaining galleries feature Clyfford Still\, Art\, and the Young Mind\, the first show CSM curated in collaboration with the community. \nUsing existing research about what kinds of art children like at different points in their development\, co-curators Bailey H. Placzek and Nicole Cromartie organized the exhibition into five gallery themes: high contrast\, scale\, pattern\, the world around us\, and color. Then\, they asked local children to select and arrange their favorite artworks\, share their perspectives for the gallery and audio content\, and help to design interactive activities. \nYoung Minds includes various interactive and interpretive elements\, including a behind-the-scenes video with clips of the infant co-curators selecting paintings for the exhibition by staring\, pointing\, vocalizing\, and grabbing reproductions of their favorite Still paintings. Pre-kindergarten students helped create an interactive art projection activity in one of the galleries and inspired an installation of prisms on one of the outdoor terraces. Young co-curators also assisted in developing audio and video experiences in English\, Spanish\, and American Sign Language. Second-grade students from two schools also selected and arranged archival images. \nCSM staff walked through the galleries with some of the young co-curators to see how they interacted with the space. The Museum used the feedback to make its building more welcoming and add comfortable areas with floor cushions for people of all ages to relax and enjoy the art from different perspectives. Young co-curators also shaped the exhibition’s wall text\, which will be bilingual in English and Spanish\, more accessible\, and encourage visitor interaction and conversation.

SUMMARY:A Decade of Discovery: Clyfford Still in Denver
DESCRIPTION:Since opening its doors\, the Clyfford Still Museum has made countless discoveries as the staff has worked to inventory and assess CSM’s vast art and archival holdings\, better understand what our visitors’ interests are and how various audiences best experience Clyfford Still’s art\, and evaluate the artist’s legacy in an ever-changing\, 21st-century world. \nThe show revisits the Museum’s inaugural exhibition and highlights some of the most compelling revelations CSM has uncovered about the collection since it opened in 2011. A Decade of Discovery (October 15\, 2021-March 6\, 2022) includes photographs of lost paintings from the 1930s\, undocumented and mysterious artworks found during the collection inventory process\, and conservation-related breakthroughs about Still’s materials. These never-before-shown elements recontextualize familiar paintings and stories\, casting Still’s art\, process\, and legacy in a new light. \nThe exhibition features expanded information about Still’s earliest years\, supportive family\, and even a few architectural quirks unearthed about the building. Exhibition text highlights various staff\, scholarly\, and community voices to broaden engagement and present a wide range of perspectives.
