SUMMARY:Kevin Umaña "Wax and Wane"
DESCRIPTION:David Richard Gallery is pleased to present Wax and Wane by Kevin Umaña\, his first solo exhibition in New York and with the Gallery. This exhibition of 17 new artworks created during 2021 is part of a larger body of work comprised of five different\, but related and interdependent bodies of works that differ by size\, supports and media. The various bodies of work include: 1) seven large canvases made of acrylic and oil media that also include a range of additions that model and provide tactile and sculpted surfaces to the individual geometric shapes; 2) four smaller paintings that experiment with novel supports\, media and additions to the media as well as specific geometric shapes and compositions that have a direct dialogue with the larger paintings; 3) two flat-ish glazed ceramic wall pieces; 4) two hybrid paintings with additions of flat glazed ceramic fragments adhered to the canvas and integrated within the compositions; and 5) one painted\, wooden\, free-standing sculpture on a pedestal. \nWax and Wane is a seminal body of work for Umaña as it marks a significant transition in his studio practice at several levels: formally\, conceptually\, culturally and emotionally. All of the artworks are derived from painting and touch on the history of painting\, the compositions are geometric and fill each support edge-to-edge. However\, the exhibition focuses on three major changes in the artist’s approach and compositions. First is Umaña’s shift from a rigorous\, precise execution of his compositions to a process-driven approach influenced by his experiences and experimentation with glazes and ceramics. This has affected his painting practice most notably in terms of color and surface. The second change is a move away from non-objective geometric abstractions derived from reductions\, then amplifications and patterning of architectural details (from personally meaningful location-specific buildings and bridges in various international locations) to a practice now rooted largely in picture making. The new compositions are geometric representations of specific places. The third notable change and relating to the second is bringing into his artwork cultural references evoked from memories of his family and youth while living in El Salvador. This includes strong influences of nature\, beaches\, plants\, construction materials\, food and religion\, and thus\, inherently brings a narrative that is alluded to in the descriptive titles.

SUMMARY:Monroe Hodder “Rising Tides and Fragile Hope”
DESCRIPTION:David Richard Gallery is pleased to present Rising Tides and Fragile Hope by Monroe Hodder\, her second solo presentation with the gallery. The presentation will showcase a new book of paintings on paper comprised of 8 oil paintings over watercolor on rag paper\, each measuring 11 x 12 inches and all bound together in a handmade book with a front and back hard cover for presentation and leafing through. \nHodder loves the power of words and the concept of a book. However\, she believes in the power of art even more. Rather than use a book as a medium to reproduce and disseminate her artworks\, she decided to create a book of original oil paintings and let them speak for themselves. The non-objective abstract imagery is powerful on its own with gestural strokes and bold colors\, each conveying a unique temperament and viewing experience. Thus\, written descriptions are not required and the viewer’s interpretation is the best description possible. In the artist’s words\, “I feel convinced by the power of art to reach us directly\, viscerally\, and spiritually with its force of form and color and space.” \nThe presentation also includes two larger paintings that measure 60 x 60 and 64 x 56 inches along with a selection of nine square paintings each 30 x 30 inches. Also included in the presentation are 4 additional paintings on paper that were not included in the bound book\, each is framed in a contemporary\, white-washed wood frame.

SUMMARY:Patsy Krebs "Interlocking Series: Paintings from 1990 to 1995"
DESCRIPTION:Series: Paintings from 1990 to 1995 in her first solo exhibition with the gallery and her first solo show in New York since 2004. The compositions are comprised of two square or rectangular geometric forms that overlap and appear as though they are interlocking and mostly all in the horizontal orientation. There is one new painting from 2021 that is differentiated by also including 24 ct gold leaf. The spatial depth and sense of volume is achieved by using Flashe paint on canvas. According to the artist\, “the velvety and luminous Flashe surface is dead flat (matte) – it has absolutely no reflective capacity\, which serves to liberate the color\, which just hangs in the air\, vis a vis the viewer\, so the forms hover\, connect\, disconnect.”1 Since the surface is matte\, the illusory aspect of the geometric forms interlocking is achieved purely through color and specifically\, the artist’s selections of colors and values and their interactions to create push or pull effects in the viewer’s mind. There are 13 paintings in the presentation: six large paintings ranging from 36 x 72” up to 48 x 90”; three mid-sized paintings ranging from 20 x 23” to 36 x 28”; and four smaller paintings that range from 12 x 16” to 12 x 24”.

SUMMARY:Dean Fleming "Gestures and Symbols Studies from 1977 to 1980"
DESCRIPTION:David Richard Gallery is pleased to present Dean Fleming: Gestures and Symbols\, Studies from 1977 to 1980. This selection of 18 small studies maps a pivotal period and transition in the aesthetics of Fleming’s artwork moving from the 1970s and into the 1980s. The artworks in this presentation fall roughly into four distinct aesthetic groupings from the noted period and correspond directly to four bodies of paintings from 1977 through 1981\, a prolific and creative period in Fleming’s career. \n\nStudies were an important part of Fleming’s studio practice as he created many of them prior to and while executing similar larger format compositions on canvas. His studies on paper\, board or canvas were stand-alone works\, mostly signed and dated\, meaning they were not just studies or sketches purely for the execution of a canvas. Sometimes there is a study that pairs with a canvas\, but not always. The studies were an independent body of work that supported the artist’s process and in particular for resolving his thoughts and approaches to a new series of paintings.

SUMMARY:Michael Namingha "Altered Landscapes "
DESCRIPTION:David Richard Gallery is pleased to present Altered Landscapes by Michael Namingha\, a Native American artist of the Tewa-Hopi tribes from Northern New Mexico in his first solo exhibition with the gallery. The presentation includes seven new photography-based artworks that address climate change and the resulting manmade alterations to the landscape using images from two specific locations in New Mexico and a novel process for printing and presenting the images. The images are manipulated and segmented into blocky structures with bisecting and overlapping planes of varying color values. The resulting digital chromogenic prints are mounted with the face of the image to the backside of shaped and strategically angled Plexiglas that relates directly to the blocky internal shapes. This process takes the photograph out of a purely pictorial realm\, giving the artist the opportunity to further compose the view\, emphasize specific elements and provide depth and perspectival dimension. \nThe first group of images are of Chaco Canyon\, an ancient and sacred place for the Hopi and Puebloan people of Arizona and New Mexico. The surrounding area is a major source of oil and natural gas extraction and according to NASA the site of the largest cloud of methane gas in North America that appears as pink\, red\, orange and yellow in satellite images. Thus\, the intense red color combined with the artist’s novel process of printing the images references the massive emissions in the region and their altering effects on the landscape. \nThe second set of images are of the mountains around Santa Fe during the summer of 2020 when\, just as now\, the Southwestern US was\, and still is\, experiencing intense and some of the historically worst fires on record. What was remarkable to the artist at that time was the intense sunsets with eerie hues and otherworldly skies with the mountains as the backdrop. Clearly\, these colors are not normal even though they are beautiful and dramatic. The proliferation of forest fires is an unfortunate by-product of global warming and mankind’s ongoing contribution to altering the landscape.
