SUMMARY:Suzan Frecon: new paintings
DESCRIPTION:David Zwirner is pleased to present new paintings by the American artist Suzan Frecon at the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street location in New York\, marking the artist’s seventh solo exhibition at the gallery. \nSuzan Frecon is known for abstract oil paintings and works on paper that are at once reductive and expressive. Made over long stretches of time\, her canvases embody the durational activity of painting itself and invite the viewer’s sustained attention: these\, as the artist herself has noted\, are “paintings that you experience.”1 \nThe artist’s compositions are characterized by arcing and asymmetrically balanced forms and are defined by precise spatial and proportional relationships. Each surface is developed carefully and gradually\, evolving from one canvas to the next in a process that combines preparation and intuition\, order and chance. In Frecon’s paintings\, composition serves as a foundational structure\, holding color\, material\, and light. \nFrecon mixes pigments and oils to differing effects\, and her almost tactile use of color and contrasting matte and sheen surfaces heightens the visual experience of her work. Depending on the light source and viewing angle\, different perceptions emerge. Colors and surfaces vary in terms of density and reflectivity\, and areas of the compositions frequently shift between positive and negative space\, or between figure and ground. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by David Zwirner Books\, which includes an essay by John Yau. \n1Suzan Frecon\, “text and related work\,” in Suzan Frecon: oil paintings and sun. DESCRIPTION:David Zwirner is pleased to present Joan Mitchell: I carry my landscapes around with me\, the first exhibition to focus on the artist’s multipaneled paintings\, on view at the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street location in New York. \nOrganized in collaboration with the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, the works on view—which span four decades of Mitchell’s career—will allow for a unique opportunity to explore the range of scale and formal experimentation of this innovative facet of her oeuvre. One of the few artists of her generation to embrace polyptych compositions\, Mitchell over time refined and expanded her approach to this format\, orchestrating a distinctive balance between continuity and rupture both within and across panels. The horizontally oriented\, panoramic expanse of these paintings is ideally suited to landscape—an important and enduring subject for Mitchell that she linked directly to memory. \nFeaturing paintings from both public and private collections as well as the holdings of the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, this show will be the gallery’s first exhibition of Mitchell’s work since having announced exclusive representation of the Foundation in 2018. SUMMARY:Alice Neel: Freedom
DESCRIPTION:On view at David Zwirner’s 537 West 20th Street gallery in New York from February 26 through April 13\, 2019\, Alice Neel: Freedom will include a selection of paintings and significant works on paper by Alice Neel (1900–1984). With a range of works spanning her career\, this exhibition focuses primarily on Neel’s portrayal of the nude figure and the ways in which the artist resolutely challenged traditional perceptions of sexuality\, motherhood\, and beauty. \nOne of the foremost American figurative painters of the twentieth century\, Neel was a humanist—she was fascinated by people. She loved to paint them in all their complexities—to penetrate and reveal their fears and anxieties\, their defiance and survival. She also loved to paint the unadorned human figure. Her nudes explore the body with frankness while celebrating the individuality of each of her subjects\, and they exemplify the freedom and courage with which she approached her work and her life. In their mastery of form\, color\, and implied social commentary\, her nudes are as relevant today as when they were painted. \nOrganized by Ginny Neel of The Estate of Alice Neel\, the exhibition will comprise significant loans from museum and private collections.
