SUMMARY:DON KIMES: REMIXING ABSTRACTION | CHEATING THE BANAL
DESCRIPTION:Denise Bibro Fine Art is pleased to announce Don Kimes’ third solo show at the gallery entitled\, Remixing Abstraction: Cheating the Banal. The exhibition will open December 3\, 2020 and run through February 6\, 2021. \nRemixing Abstraction: Cheating the Banal is comprised of work completed within the past three years. Like works in his previous solo exhibitions at Denise Bibro Fine Art\, these works have evolved from experiences and assimilations of experiences from the past thirty years or more. Kimes’ personal tragic event of losing years of painting\, drawing\, and inventory from a flooded studio has been the catalyst to constant sourcing of memories and experiences that are created into art. This journey has crossed a path were the experience of loss has fine-tuned his present work\, allowing no room for the formulaic and decorative. \nKimes’s work counters the “Zombie Abstraction” movement that current critics like Jerry Saltz notes as being without context or history. \nKimes divides his time between Washington\, DC\, New York State and Italy. Kimes teaches at American University in Washington\, DC. He is also Artistic Director at the ACI program\, a residency for Artists and Writers in Umbria\, Italy. He has been a finalist for the position of Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts and has served as Artistic Director in the Visual Arts at the renowned Chautauqua Institution from 1986 through 2018. He is represented by Denise Bibro Fine Art in New York City\, where he has also shown at Frederieke Taylor\, Kouros\, Lucky Strike\, National Academy of Design\, Arsenal Gallery\, Ammo Artists Space\, The Brooklyn Museum\, and Prince Street Gallery. He has exhibited internationally at Rueda Museum\, Madrid; The Florence Biennale; Rocca Paolina\, Perugia; Casa de Cultura\, Mexico; Living Art\, Milan; America Haus\, Munich among many others. \n  \nCatalogue below:\nhttps://issuu.com/traneses/docs/dk_2020-21

SUMMARY:GRETNA CAMPBELL: FORCE OF NATURE
DESCRIPTION:Gretna Campbell is noted for her personified depiction of nature. Particularly the rugged rich rocks\, landscapes\, and water of Maine that she frequented. Rooted in the paths of Cubism\, she succeeded in breaking down true color\, light\, and form. Capturing natures mystery and beauty. Her method of brush work echoes the life and constant movement of change inherent in the natural world.

SUMMARY:PATRICE CHARBONNEAU: SHOALS
DESCRIPTION:Denise Bibro Fine Art\, Chelsea\, NYC is pleased to announce an exhibition of Patrice Charbonneau’s abstractions in paint entitled\, S H O A L S\, running October 15 – November 28\, 2020. \nCharbonneau is a fine painter with the fortuitous luck of also being a trained architect. There is a sensual understanding of shape and form in his work. It is also inherent that in his work there is a sense of tactual dimensionality. The current body of paintings entitled\, S H O A L S\, is reminiscent of the submerged ridges beneath the surface of water that are a hazard to navigate. The concept displaces the viewer and forces the viewer to take stock of his or her coordinates in his bold and voluptuous strokes of paint. \nThe dynamics of the city landscape are not the only source of inspiration for the artists’ work. His memories and experience are as well. The artist has an uncanny sense of how not to overdue. Even though the work may be unsettling\, it is never overworked. It is always authentic and honest. There is always a sense of place. \nCharbonneau has a degree in Architecture and Environmental Design. He has had several exhibitions in both Canada and New York. He has also participated in various Art Fairs.

SUMMARY:CANVASSING THE BOROS 2020
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Artists: Dan Bauman\, Elizabeth Castonguay\, Carol Chave\, Elaine Clayman\, Joseph Hicks\, Ellen Hirsch\, Ronald Katz\, Vera Manzi-Schacht\, Kathleen Migliore-Newton\, David Outhwaite\, Penko Platikanov\, Michael Poast\, Anthony Polizzi\, Gail Postal\, Barbara Rosenthal\, Sheila Smith\, and Gerald Wolfe. \nFor several years\, we have been hosting Art from the Boros exhibitions. \nThese exhibitions are comprised of artists who have submitted works from all the five boroughs. After reviewing the work\, a selected number of artists are chosen for a studio visit and from those visits we further select artists to participate in the final exhibition. Artists from these exhibitions have now become affiliated with the gallery. \nDenise Bibro Fine Art is providing further opportunities for these artists that are not exclusively represented by a gallery. This opportunity provides a glimpse into how much talent is in our midst and gives these artists an opportunity to exhibit\, when such opportunities are scarce. It informs the public of the great diversity of art and talent that the metropolitan area has. These artists enrich our cultural and social environment. They are an integral part of the pulse and life of the city. \nWe invite you to view each of these artist’s works on our website\, social media\, and in person.

SUMMARY:ONLINE FEATURED ARTIST: WARREN LINN
DESCRIPTION:These 8 small paintings/collages are from a larger series done in response to Donald Trump’s Covid-19 News Conferences in late April and early May. The purpose in skewering a corrupt\, racist\, demagogue\, and rewards of abstraction share the stage in this work.\n– Warren Linn.  May 16\, 2020 \nAlthough our current climate is uncertain and distressing\, Warren Linn continues to create sharp and satirical works of art about  politics and the media \nDenise Bibro Fine Art is committed to finding creative ways to promote artists and continue to survive while still following social distancing during these difficult times. \nDBFA and its artists are offering beautiful works of art at reduced prices to facilitate our collectors journey in this uncharted territory. \nWe would like to give our collectors the opportunity to help the arts\, the creation of art\, and to acquire beauty without the distractions of our present “normal” lives.

SUMMARY:ONLINE FEATURED ARTIST: PAULA ELLIOTT
DESCRIPTION:Our current Featured Artist is New York based artist Paula Elliott. Elliot’s work is an exploration of space and light. Elliott is an architect of space and nuance using color\, form\, and light to its best advantage.\n\nThe luminous\, ephemeral and atmospheric qualities created give the shapes individual character and an iconic presence. Elliott describes her work eloquently when she describes her motivations and manifestations:\n\n“Originally derived from the concept of a container\, a familiar and universal object in the capacity to hold\, receive and deliver content\, while exploring the enclosing exterior whether dense or permeable\, of the shapes themselves.” \n\n\n\nDenise Bibro Fine Art is committed to finding creative ways to promote artists and continue to survive while still following social distancing during these difficult times.\n\nDBFA and its artists are offering beautiful works of art at reduced prices to facilitate our collectors journey in this uncharted territory.\n\nWe would like to give our collectors the opportunity to help the arts\, the creation of art\, and to acquire beauty without the distractions of our present “normal” lives.\n \nDomestic shipping is included in the price.

SUMMARY:ONLINE FEATURED ARTIST: CLAUDIA DORING-BAEZ
DESCRIPTION:Our current Featured Artist is New York based painter Claudia Doring-Baez. Doring-Baez’s process is spontaneous and bombastic. Her paintings reflect her love of the flow of line in her drawing and sketching: they are genuine and raw. \nThese paintings were inspired by the quarantine works of New York photographer\, Mark Seliger\, whose eerie photographs depict the now isolated streets of New York City. \nDenise Bibro Fine Art and the artist are donating fifty percent of any sales of these specific works to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead\, NY. \nWe would like to give collectors an opportunity to help the art community and help protect and facilitate an environment of creativity while acquiring works for themselves to enjoy and pass along in the future. \nDenise Bibro Fine Art is committed to finding creative ways to promote artists and continue to survive while still following social distancing during these difficult times. \nDomestic shipping is included in the price.

SUMMARY:NEW VISIONS: ACTIVISM THROUGH THE LENS
DESCRIPTION:SEEING FOR OURSELVES\nDenise Bibro Fine Art & the New York City Department of Probation collaboration: \nNew Visions: Activism Through the Lens\nNeON (Neighborhood Opportunity Network) Photographers \nDenise Bibro Fine Art\, in Chelsea\, NYC\, in collaboration with Seeing for Ourselves is pleased to announce New Visions: Activism Through the Lens\, its second exhibition at the gallery\, the highlights of the Department of Probation’s (DOP’s) Neighborhood Opportunity Network (NeON) photography program. \nProvided to New Yorkers serving probation and their neighbors\, the twelve-week course—conducted by the participatory photography non-profit Seeing for Ourselves (SFO)—imparts a marketable skill while encouraging participants to express themselves and share their stories through photography. Four million Americans have found themselves under this form of community supervision\, the sanction poorly understood by the general public. \nThe exhibit features photography by those residing in the seven underserved communities that a large portion of DOP’s clients call home: The South Bronx\, Harlem\, Bedford-Stuyvesant\, East New York\, Brownsville\, South Jamaica\, and Northern Staten Island. \nThe course follows the SFO paradigm established with public housing residents 2010-2013 that led to the globally-acclaimed\, award-winning Project Lives: New York Residents of Public Housing Photograph Their World published in 2015. The NeON Photography program—with funding obtained by SFO from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the city’s Work Progress Program\, and Sigma Corporation of America—will also lead to a book. Like the earlier publication\, the upcoming book will present a corrective portrait of the photographers’ communities\, a visual tale of and by a population sensationalized by the media; the tale supported by a first-time portrait of the function serving these Americans with something less than stellar success. And so the wider purpose of both works is to reform what remains broken. \nDirecting the program for the SFO/DOP partnership\, Chelsea Davis explains\, “Our program provides professional photography training\, as well as an opportunity\, environment\, and expectation for each participant to succeed. Each success looks different; for some it’s finding employment as a professional photographer\, for others it’s using photography as a tool for self-expression or as a creative outlet.” Ana Bermudez—Commissioner of the agency recognized by the industry as its leader—states\, “NeON Photography is a transformative experience for those on probation and other community residents. It teaches the history of photography and provides complementary technical skills and the art of visual storytelling. The photographers have developed commercial advertising campaigns and undertaken event photography from Carnegie Hall to City Hall.  The classes have increased civic engagement and built stronger relationships—particularly with adults and other community members—while creating intrinsic change within the participants in how they view themselves\, and in their hope for their future and career path.” Denise Bibro observes\, “Hosting this exhibit returns me to 2004\, when the gallery featured Unbroken: Photography Subjects Speak Out— a pioneering participatory photography show.” Unbroken was curated by Denise Bibro and the very same principals who would eventually launch SFO. \nDenise Bibro Fine Art is located at 529 West 20 Street\, 4 Floor New York\, NY 10011 \n

SUMMARY:NORA CHAVOOSHIAN: WOMEN’S WORK- SCULPTURE & TRAMA TEXTILES\, MAYAN WOMEN WEAVERS COLLABORATION
DESCRIPTION:Denise Bibro Fine Art\, 529 West 20th Street\, Chelsea\, NYC\, is pleased to announce Nora Chavooshian’s fourth major exhibition with the gallery. \nChavooshian continues her life’s journey exploring her identity and universal truths through the lens of her Armenian heritage. What differentiates this exhibition from others is her focus on the work of women and their tenacious efforts to keep their cultural identity regardless of the atrocities that they have experienced. It is a repetitive damning part of history that abominations like the genocide that occurred in 1915 against the Armenian people are present today. Unfortunately\, we have witnessed this in Burma\, Yugoslavia\, Syria\, Africa\, and Guatemala\, to name only a few. \nChavooshian’s sculpture reflects her keen interests and empathetic concern for human global struggles. The preservation of the human spirit is paramount to her. Her sculptures are visual metaphors and symbols of her own personal identity. Her exploration parallels that of others and confirms that the needs and desires of human beings are universal; even if they are on different platforms. She is a woman at work\, and like others\, women continue to do work that is life affirming. \nHer piece\, Tidal\, is a bold structured composition comprised of cast forton and beads. Tidal has a strong skeletal structured outline. The crevices and textures within its girth have nestled beads\, evoking a story of women at work. This piece elicits a feeling of doing and making. Enveloping beads appear to suggest the continuum of greatness through dexterity. In Lace\, she incorporates the beautiful and very personal work of her Grandmother\, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide. \nThe piece literally flows from its structure like a river. By replicating her Grandmother’s lace work and repurposing it you can feel the weight of emotion both then and now as if you could see her Grandmother’s fingers working as she perseveres in her journey of survival. Grandmother and granddaughter are of one mind. The downward pouring emotions evoke the feeling of release. \nIt is often the women from traumatized societies who are the ones tasked with resurrecting their culture\, igniting the will to survive and inspiring the determination to move forward in a progressive and life-affirming direction. \nChavooshian takes a very courageous step to include works\, not only of her own\, but in collaboration with others. She witnessed how the Guatemalan Mayan women\, who have survived the Genocide of the 1970s-1980s worked and weaved\, asserting their culture and identity; evoking the same sensibilities as the works of her female Armenian family. Subsequently she created the collaborative piece\, Trama\, by incorporating Mayan Women’s weaving into a single larger work. Although each framed part reflects one artist’s aesthetic\, the combination of them all evoke a sense of unified solidarity. Nora’s sculptured grid frames and complements each artist’s contribution which creates the flux and glue that gives the work full meaning. Together they have created a work that reveals their compelling stories and history. \nThis collaborative work is available to collectors with proceeds going to the 100% Women’s Worker Owned Weaving Cooperative\, Trama Textiles that exists in Guatemala. \nFinally\, this exhibition\, not only illustrates the breadth of Chavooshian’s journeys and heightened awareness\, but it is a prevailing reminder of women’s universal role of moving society in a life affirming direction. \nChavooshian’s sculpture commands the viewers to reckon and take note. \nNora Chavooshian has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and is in private and public collections in both the U.S. and Europe. Her exhibitions include Max Hutchinson Gallery\, NY; Denise Bibro Fine Art\, NY; The Los Angeles Women’s Building; Trenton City Museum\, NJ; Monmouth Museum\, NJ; and Salem State College\, MA. She has received numerous awards\, and commissions including a California Arts Council Grant to curate a show of San Francisco women’s artwork at the Los Angeles Women’s Building. \nAmong various public parks and buildings\, Chavooshian’s public artwork includes an exterior sculpture commissioned for the University of Minnesota’s state of the art Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center in which she collaborated with a beekeeper to incorporate bees and their honeycomb formed into her bronze sculpture. She was also commissioned for a major permanent bronze sculpture in the Montclair New Jersey’s children park. \nWidening her discipline and arena as a sculptor\, she has designed award-winning sculptural stage sets\, as well as film production design. She has designed several films for director John Sayles\, sculptural set pieces for director Martin Scorsese\, videos for Bruce Springsteen and Madonna\, as well as many others. \nRECEPTION: THURSDAY\, FEBRUARY 13\, 2020\, 6 – 8PM.\nTHE ARTIST WILL BE PRESENT.

SUMMARY:JOSEPH STEFANELLI: REDISCOVERED GENIUS – ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM 60’S – 90’S
DESCRIPTION:A goldmine of underrated artists are in our midst\, most of whom are no longer with us\, but their works remain. These fantastically soulful paintings are to be discovered and coveted. Joseph Stefanelli is one of these artists who has left us a wonderful legacy. \nA colleague and peer of Stefanelli\, Yvonne Thomas\, has just had a well-received and successful exhibition in Chelsea\, NYC with Berry Campbell Gallery. The show received a review in The New York Times by Roberta Smith\, similar to the review that Thomas received by NYT writer Grace Glueck at Denise Bibro Fine Art in the early 2000’s. \nDenise Bibro Fine Art recognized the respective geniuses more than a decade ago. Stefanelli had a solo exhibition in the late 90’s with Denise Bibro Fine Art at their previous location in SoHo. The 90’s show was reviewed in Art in America and ArtNews… pre-Instagram; when hard print reviews were the norm and coveted. \nStefanelli was a gifted artist. His paintings are fiery and wanton but deliberate. He was a seasoned painter who knew how to draw and paint. He had a gift for well-conceived forms\, color\, and composition. \nThe works displayed at the gallery cover the periods of the 60’s through the 90’s. His talents were noted in such early well-established venues like the Stable Gallery\, NYC\, in the 50’s and 60’s. Stefanelli was part of the gang of artists that frequented the infamous Cedar Tavern in the Village where he drank and talked. He had a house and studio in the Hamptons like his more famous counterpart\, Willem de Kooning. These were the days when the artists in the Springs of the Hamptons were the main event in the area\, not what exists today. \nWhy de Kooning eclipsed artists like Stefanelli is a very long story and different to whomever is speaking. Whatever the answer\, personality\, lack of chances\, male vs. female…. the bottom line\, artists like Stefanelli were better or on par of many that were more valued at that time and even today. To analyze is a waste time\, now is the opportunity for these artists to get the attention they rightfully deserve. Now is the time for collectors to pay attention and acquire. The art speaks for itself. \nWe implore all to come and see these works. At the very least there are lessons to be felt and learned. At best\, the public has an opportunity to enter the art market and collect works that have remarkable value\, that have survived the quagmires of the art market. \nStefanelli exhibited in the early 40’s through the 60’s in numerous galleries\, including New Gallery\, NYC\, an exhibition juried by the famous\, Meyer Shapiro and Critic Clement Greenberg; The Pointdexter Gallery\, NYC; Galerie Peter Baumler Regensberg\, Germany; and Olaf Clasen Gallery\, Germany\, as well as many University shows at Temple University Abroad\, Italy; Princeton University\, NJ; and The New School\, NY. \nHe exhibited and is in the collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art\, NYC; The Museum of Modern Art\, NYC; Albright-Knox Museum\, Buffalo\, NY; and The Walker Art Center\, MN to name just a few. He taught in prestigious institutions such as New York University\, The New School\, Colombia\, NYC; Princeton\, NJ; and The University of California\, CA. He received numerous awards and grants from The Pollack Krasner Foundation; The NY Council of The Arts\, NYC; Spear Research Fund; and The Princeton University of Rome\, as well as a Fulbright to Italy. \nHe completed numerous murals and installations in the New York School System. He is in various public and private collections including The Eugene Thaw Collection; Union Carbide Corporation; Geigy-Ciba Collection; Walter P. Chrysler Collection; Walker Art Center\, MN\, as well as many others. \nReception: Thursday\, November 14\, 6-8pm

SUMMARY:CLAUDIA DORING-BAEZ: OUTSIDE IT: PAINTINGS
DESCRIPTION:DENISE BIBRO FINE ART\, 529 West 20 Street\, Chelsea\, NYC is pleased to announce Claudia Doring-Baez’s first solo exhibition with the gallery\, Outside It: Paintings. The show runs October 3 – November 9\, 2019. \nDoring-Baez’s current works are inspired by the famous late French photographer Brassaï’s photographs of Paris by night\, everyday Parisian life\, and photos of Picasso’s sculptures. Doring-Baez shares Brassaï’s love of romance\, atmosphere\, nightlife\, and the enchanting Parisian lifestyle. The extraordinary and ordinary become fantastical. Doring-Baez delves inside of each of his images. She captures the spirit and character of the moment of that time. \nAlthough Doring-Baez shares the same affinity for the subject matter; she develops her own interpretation of that moment of life and circumstance. \nDoring-Baez’s interpretations become new Brassaï-ish vignettes with a totally new perspective and distinction. The work takes her to places Brassaï has been\, but she has never. She immerses herself into a life of nuance\, intrigue\, naughtiness… brothels\, prostitution\, gay bars\, and ménage à trois’…… The common is uncommon\, the Risqué is par for the course. \nDoring-Baez’s process is spontaneous and bombastic. Her love of the flow of drawing and sketching is reflected in her use of paint giving her work a raw freshness. It is more important to Doring-Baez that the forms and shapes in her paintings are fluid and that she creates amalgamations of the unexpected. \nDoring-Baez has been painting since childhood\, after she accompanied her mother\, also a painter\, to noted artist\, Robin Bond’s studio in Tacubaya\, Mexico. She has lived and painted in New York for the past thirty years. She received her B.A from Columbia University NYC\, and her M.A from The New York Studio School\, NYC\, where she did her thesis work\, inspired by Cindy Sherman. She has been in numerous exhibitions in New York City and Mexico. \nReception: Thursday\, October 3\, 2019\, 6-8 pm. The artist will be present.

SUMMARY:ADOLFO DORING: PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO
DESCRIPTION:Denise Bibro Fine Art is pleased to announce its first exhibition of photography and video work by the late multidisciplinary artist\, Adolfo Doring. His diptych silver gelatin black and white images are from his POSTED 162 Grams series and the larger photos are from his American Burger series. Doring’s solo exhibition runs October 3 – November 9\, 2019. \nDoring’s diptychs are based on images of females and environmental scenes that he posted on Instagram from August 2014 – September 2015. Each image of a female figure and the environment were assigned a layer of meta-data to differentiate the two types of images\, then a second set of meta-data was assigned to indicate the number of likes for each image\, which he would combine to make a diptych. When selecting which images would be placed on the right and the left\, Doring left it completely up to chance; he flipped a coin. In his own words\, “The random nature of the process has given me the unexpected pleasure of experiencing unexpected compositions.” \nThe American Burger series and the video shown about highways in Mexico City display the commercialism\, fast pace and unpredictability in the city\, although quite different they are still in tone with his humanistic and idiosyncratic style. The video shown sets a contrasting tone from the rich\, vintage tones of the photograph\, echoing the nuts and bolts of the infrastructure of motorways in his native city\, Mexico City\, full of the life\, movement and pace of the city. \nHis compositions are silver gelatin prints. His photographs reference the daguerreotypes of nineteenth-century photography. As New York writer\, Miss Rosen states\, “… when regular people who might not be able to afford a portrait could have likenesses preserved—much in the same way digital photography has democratized the image making. By translating digital photographs back to film\, Doring illustrates that progress is not necessarily a linear affair\, just as randomness is a valuable tool in the creative process.” Rosen further notes “…. that somewhere where between chance and mystery lies imagination.” \nDoring has been behind the camera since he was a teenager in Mexico City\, where he shot his first documentary about the stark divide between rich and poor. Later he had an extensive and illustrious career making films\, documentaries\, music videos\, taking photographs\, and crafting art installations centered upon his videos. He studied law at Universidad Anahuac in Mexico City\, Mexico\, and Sociology and Film at Columbia University\, New York. His video work in the music industry earned him an MTV Music Video Award. His narrative films and documentaries earned him critical praise (Metro premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2009) and his video installations have travelled the world over. Since 2010 his works have been featured in many Whitebox Center shows as well as in other exhibitions curated by Silvas Von Morisse Gallery\, New York\, NY; Raul Zamudio-in Shanghai\, China; Monterrey\, Mexico; San Jose\, Costa Rica; and Saint Angelo\, Italy. \nAdolfo’s untimely death in 2016 leaves behind a rich legacy for future generations to cherish. \nReception: Thursday\, October 3\, 2019\, 6-8 pm.

The classes have increased civic engagement and built stronger relationships—particularly with adults and other community members—while creating intrinsic change within the participants in how they view themselves\, and in their hope for their future and career path.” Denise Bibro observes\, “Hosting this exhibit returns me to 2004\, when the gallery featured Unbroken: Photography Subjects Speak Out—a pioneering participatory photography show.” Unbroken was curated by Denise Bibro and the very same principals who would eventually launch SFO.

SUMMARY:THURSTON BELMER: THE BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS
DESCRIPTION:Denise Bibro Fine Art in Chelsea is pleased to announce Brooklyn artist Thurston Belmer’s first solo exhibition\, THE BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS. The show will run May 16 – June 15\, 2019. \nBelmer provokes the viewer to be introspective… personal. His paintings deal with loss\, alienation\, and the absurd. \nThurston’s work explores the journey of self-introspection\, and the inability to find universal meaning. His work is mysterious and ominous. His deftly rendered interiors and figures are crisp in line\, and volumetric in shape and form. His compositions are rich in colors of burnt umbers\, greys\, and deep reds that accentuating their resolve and baroque-like sensibilities. Belmer’s organization of space is the provocateur of the narrative of his paintings. \nHe articulates that he’s not particularly religious and inspired by classic literature particularly the novel Moby Dick. As he states his work “…carries the aesthetic weight of art historical movements that were most notably the baroque…. His attraction to this baroque aesthetic is in its inherent severity and moral solidity that he can contrast with the world that is only solid in appearance…” while his aesthetic is inspired by Moby Dick\, his organization of space is more the aesthetic architecture of Camus. \nHe provokes the viewer to explore the mysteries of life and circumstance personally. “…He rethinks human inadequacies that build boundaries in the first place and that lonely existential\, personal place that allows fear to push individuals to dominate\, subjugate and control…” Belmer’s paintings are his “…conduit\, through which our human experience grows…” \nHis work has been exhibited nationally including Salomon Art Gallery\, New York\, NY; Murray State University – Clara M. Eagle Gallery\, Murray\, KY; Danforth Museum of Art\, Farmington\, MA; Kemper Art Museum\, St. Louis\, MO; Seton Gallery – University of New Haven\, IL; Institute of Art Chicago\, IL; Shore Institute of Contemporary Art\, Ashbury Park\, NJ; and the Hinge Gallery in Saint Louis\, MO among many others. His work has been published in Hyperallergic\, Direct Art Magazine\, Artefuse\, Beautiful Savage Magazine\, Artribune\, Hesa Imprint Magazine – Helsinki Finland\, and Flavorpill. He received his Master of Fine Arts degree from Washington University\, Saint Louis\, MO and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Lyme Academy College of Fine Art in Old Lyme\, CT. \n

SUMMARY:CHUCK WALKE: NEOREALISM
DESCRIPTION:Denise Bibro Fine Art in Chelsea is pleased to exhibit works by Chicago artist\, Chuck Walker\, in his solo exhibition NEOREALISM. \nWalker is a seasoned artist. In the past referred as a rogue artist… a bit unconventional. His current work has edginess\, but there is a veteran mellowness of a painter in the trenches without compromising skill\, intellect or human content. Walker’s paintings are informed with only what one can obtain from experience.  An early review in the Art Examiner by John Brunetti speaks well of the artist\, “…. Often emphasized\, this misrepresentation of Walker’s working methods has been a convenient distraction ……from serious critical analysis of his often-diverse body of socially uncomfortable images\, while overlooking\, and in the process debasing\, the conceptual intelligence and formal complexity that anchor Walker’s bravura paint handling.” \nWalker paints with passion and imagination. His subjects are humble and heroic. They are intersective and not so easy to detect. They can be romantic\, venerable\, and self-absorbed. Their stances may be awkward\, their eyes closed\, their faces turned. Often a deep past is suggested\, or a happening coupled with an unexpected feeling of what is to come. Most often there is always psychological drama and tension. As Sue Taylor\, from ARTnews once said\, “…Walker’s brand of realism is somewhat akin to Eric Fischl’s grim vision\, where stylistic inaccuracies also parallel disturbing ambiguities in subject manner…Walker’s approach\, unlike Fischl’s\, is sympathetic\, not sardonic. Clearly\, he feels tenderness for these stoic figures\, male or female\, images dredged up from the inner recesses of his mind and lovingly scumbled and troweled onto the canvas.” \nThe viewer seems to be eavesdropping. His subjects often display a mix of emotions…. it could be one of angst or another of reverie. He is interested in the soul\, which like his paintings\, is not obvious or hard to find in the multilayers of imagery. \nAs in his earlier work\, his use of chiaroscuro conveys the solemn\, mysterious\, and foreboding tension of the figure. His current work still conveys this\, but also depicts layers of color and suggestion of movement yet to happen or that which may have already happened. There is often an eerily unsettledness in his work that provokes the viewer and invites you to be tantalized and engaged. In this regard\, Walker still has the same qualities that critics spoke of in his earlier years but now he has broadened his oeuvre of paining to include new dialogues that appear to be mannered but current at the same time. Mystery is still thick in the air. \nChuck Walker’s work has been exhibited at numerous venues\, including the Rockford Art Museum\, IL; Hyde Park Art Center\, Chicago\, IL; Chicago Cultural Center\, IL; Chicago Botanic Garden\, IL; Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art\, IL; Contemporary Center for Art in St. Louis\, MO\, and Evanston Art Center and Artspace\, IL to name a few. His work is included in various private and public collections\, such as the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art\, IL and the Tampa Museum of Art\, FL. Walker’s work has been discussed and reviewed in Art News\, New Art Examiner\, Chicago Tribune\, Chicago Sun Times\, and Art in America. Walker went to the Art Institute of Chicago\, IL.
