SUMMARY:ABE ODEDINA: UNDER THE INFLUENCE
DESCRIPTION:ABE ODEDINA: UNDER THE INFLUENCE\nFEBRUARY 15 – MARCH 12\, 2022 \nWe are happy to announce Under the Influence — a special Project Room installation by Abe Odedina (b. 1960\, Ibadan\, Nigeria)\, his first show in Los Angeles.  The exhibition of paintings will open Tuesday\, February 15th and will be on view through March 12\, 2022. \nOdedina is a Nigerian-British painter who is based in London and Bahia\, Brazil. Under The Influence will present a suite of eight paintings — both portraits and still lifes. Painting on plywood board rather than canvas\, Odedina’s compositions embody all the solidity — and practicality — of shop fronts or municipal murals. He offers us a vivid palette with a formal nod to Renaissance portraiture.  His figural paintings are highly legible allegorical vernacular. Inspried by the rich figurative and oral traditions of African art\, infused with a trace of magical realism\, his practice seeks to revive and deconstruct quintessential classical themes spanning from ancient Greek to Yoruba mythologies to create a charged dialogue between epochs\, cultures\, and peoples. \n\nAbe Odedina\, With A Cherry On Top\, 2021

SUMMARY:JULIAN STANCZAK: THE LIGHT INSIDE
DESCRIPTION:Diane Rosenstein Gallery is pleased to announce our fourth solo exhibition of paintings by Polish-American artist Julian Stanczak. \nThe Light Inside explores Stanczak’s intuitive use of color and geometric abstraction to create a sense of radiant light. This historic series of paintings — made in Cleveland between 1972-1987 — resonates with the themes of the California Light And Space movement. According to the artist (who died in 2017)\, his minimal compositions are emotional landscapes that express his desire to transcend the surface containment of the painting as object and connect with the viewer through perception. \n\nJulian Stanczak\, Aqueous\, 1975\, Acrylic on canvas\, 60 x 50 inches

SUMMARY:Ilona Szwarc: Virgin Soap
DESCRIPTION:Diane Rosenstein Gallery is pleased to announce Virgin Soap — a solo exhibition of photographs and sculpture by Ilona Szwarc. In this new body of work\, the Polish American artist documents herself casting a model’s torso in silicone and plaster. The model lies prone on a table\, her breasts exposed\, classically posed against an electric blue backdrop. A perverse tutorial proceeds: Szwarc stands behind the model\, a presence at once intimate and coercive. The artist binds her subject’s breasts with laces to measure them\, then covers the model’s breasts\, shoulders\, and mouth in green silicone. \nAs a female artist with a focus on self-portraiture\, Ilona Szwarc draws on her ongoing fascination with doppelgängers. She explores themes of identity\, transformation\, and the dopplegänger – an inquiry rooted in her immigrant experience. Szwarc’s work is concerned with rendering her experience visible in a way impossible in language. Here\, the artist plays Pygmalion\, unsure where the boundary lies between the real and the fake. \n\nImage:\nIlona Szwarc\nHORMONES ARE HORMONES\, AND ART IS ART\, 2021\nArchival pigment print\n42 x 52 inches\n106.7 x 132.1 cm\nEdition of 3 plus 2 AP\nISZ110\n©Ilona Szwarc

SUMMARY:Heather Day: Ricochet
DESCRIPTION:Heather Day: Ricochet \nSeptember 12 – October 24\, 2020 \nGallery hours by appointment: Tuesday – Saturday\, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm \nDiane Rosenstein Gallery is pleased to announce Heather Day: Ricochet — a solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by the Bay Area-based artist. This is her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. Heather Day makes abstract paintings comprised of scraped\, smeared\, and flooded pools of pigment. The compulsive energy of her work oscillates between rehearsed abandon and careful restraint. Her encompassing murals\, large canvases\, and intimate drawings study the mechanisms of sensory perception — mining what happens when the body interprets a sound as a texture\, or a scent as a color. \nThe title of the exhibition – Ricochet – refers to the artist’s process of navigating her compositions as one mark leads to the next\, without a predestined resolution. The title is also a metaphor for the global chain of reactions in our natural environment\, social and cultural space\, and intuitive relationships with each other. This body of work is a new chapter in her practice\, beginning with the monumental diptych Fever Dream (2020)\, which serves as the bridge. The pairing of the two canvases recalls the seam of her sketchbook; and anticipates the new stitched paintings in this exhibition\, such as Space Between (2020) which she describes as a “mind map.” \nEarlier this spring\, during the onset of the pandemic\, the artist left San Francisco for Joshua Tree and was surrounded by the quiet and solitude of the desert environment. Here amid the desert spring\, she was inspired by the wildflower superbloom and new colors seeped into these new paintings. The paintings in this exhibition were created during a transformative year. Like many artists who have seen their exhibitions canceled or closed\, Day’s first solo museum show was closed early due to the pandemic. She feels so much gratitude and appreciation that the show was seen in person\, if only for a few weeks. Since then\, she has taken refuge in her studio – in the physical and emotional space that allows quiet and experimentation. \nHeather Day: Ricochet will be on view to the public from September 12\, 2020 to October 24\, 2020 by appointment only. Please visit dianerosenstein.com to make a reservation. \n\n
