SUMMARY:Kiss the Earth / Touch the Sky : Lena Klett
DESCRIPTION:Eye Lounge presents Kiss the Earth / Touch the Sky– a solo exhibition by Lena Klett. Made while in residence at Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, the work in the exhibition is an investigation into site\, hypothetical objects\, and the relationship between intentional action and chance. \nLena Klett is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Phoenix\, Arizona. Her work seeks to examine ideas of impermanence\, expectation\, translation\, and interdependency as ways to reimagine seemingly banal or unimportant objects from the natural world. She uses drawing\, sculpture\, and video to dissect\, abstract\, and transform an object in order to reconsider how our evaluations of importance and unimportance might change if we learn to see the world a little differently. \nKlett received an MFA from Arizona State University in 2019 and a BFA in Fiber and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2014. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally\, and she is a recipient of the 2019 Phoenix Art Museum’s Friends of Contemporary Art Emerging Artist Grant. She has been an artist in residence at Signal Fire Arts (Summer Immersion 2017)\, Shiro Oni Studio (Gunma\, Japan 2018)\, Monson Arts (2020)\, and Anderson Ranch Arts Center (2021).

SUMMARY:Mikey Foster Estes/ Beaver
DESCRIPTION:In his second solo exhibition at the gallery\, Mikey Foster Estes presents new photographic works alongside selections of paintings and objects created by the artist’s late father\, Beaver\, from whom the exhibition takes its title. The exhibition also includes a collaborative video work from 2013 in which the artist\, donning red high heels\, builds a piece of furniture with his father in the garage. \nThe family home figures as a central focal point in Afterimages (2021)\, an ongoing series of photographic works. The images\, made in various areas throughout the house\, document its contents while also depicting the artist’s subject through what is left behind. In studying the house itself\, he continues to consider the idea of the portrait as an absence. \nThis selection of images highlight in part some of the house’s idiosyncrasies\, many of which were implemented by Beaver himself: stained glass windows\, hand-painted wall designs\, mosaics\, and more. Most recently he had started to make paintings\, a practice in which he was active up until his death in July 2020. A sampling of his self-taught oeuvre is displayed alongside the other works in the exhibition. \nDaddy’s Boy (2013) is a split screen video that follows father and son as they each build a side of a small wooden stand. The action is playfully subverted by the introduction of high heel shoes\, a gesture drawing contrast to gendered expectations of masculine identities. Both sides of the stand are assembled and finished differently\, and the video concludes with the image of the two halves coming together. \nMikey Foster Estes is an artist whose practice is rooted in the everyday and spans performance\, photography\, sculpture\, video\, and writing. In addition to exhibiting locally\, his work has been included in exhibitions in Chicago\, Los Angeles\, and New York. In 2020\, he developed Living Room\, a live-streamed performance for a series developed by nueBOX. SUMMARY:Kristen Miologos – COMPEL /REPEL
DESCRIPTION:Kristen Miologos is a Phoenix-based artist who seeks out the emotional liminal space of her hyphenated Greek-American identity through the production of objects\, performance\, and sound. She holds an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Fibers from Arizona State University. Most recently\, Kristen has performed durational sound pieces at Phoenix Art Museum\, Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson\, and Angels Gate Cultural Center in Los Angeles. Kristen is currently adjunct art faculty at Estrella Mountain Community College. \nTo live a hyphenated-identity is to live in the in-between spaces of existence\, always seeking harmony within oneself. Compel/Repel is a solo exhibition by artist Kristen Miologos that examines the emotional polarities of hyphenated-identity through the use of magnetic fields\, found objects\, and sound. The intention of a hyphen is to join\, and yet\, oftentimes it can represent a barrier between polarized worlds. Within this context\, Kristen associates the hyphen with the notion of liminality; the line acts as a physical representation of the emotional space traversed between multiple\, cultural selves. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Charles Kurre / A Certainty of Measure
DESCRIPTION:Eye Lounge is pleased to present:  Charles Kurre / A Certainty of Measure \nCharles Kurre’s work is influenced by a life lived in the outdoors.  A backcountry guide\, urban explorer\, and avid gardener\, his sparse intimate images created from fragments of wilderness and urban landscapes shaped by the forces of nature and human endeavors\, are a narrative of transformation — a history of change. The text accompanying the work is assembled from the ephemera of current events\, offering a context in which the work unfolds. This construct between language and image straddles the space between the emotional and intellectual contextualization of experience and its power to shape belief.

SUMMARY:Amy Sansbury Manning / Surface Studies
DESCRIPTION:Eye Lounge is pleased to present Surface Studies\, an exhibition of new work by Amy Sansbury Manning. In her first solo show at Eye Lounge\, she presents a series of ceramic paintings that repeat a simple graphic motif to explore the medium’s range. The exhibition will be on view through January 10\, 2021\, with an artist demonstration outside the gallery on Sunday\, December 27. \nThe work in this exhibition explores how ceramic surfaces are created by the material properties of the medium and the processes of mark-making. They iterate through a wide range of mark-making techniques: incising lines and shapes into wet clay; drawing with different brushes; building up textured surfaces with slip and glaze; and creating color with slip\, glaze\, underglaze\, metal oxides\, and ceramic stains. As she works\, Manning constantly asks herself “what if …?” The multiple tiles and panels invite comparisons and contrasts between the results of these experiments. \n

SUMMARY:The Amber of the Moment / Cyd Peroni
DESCRIPTION:In her second solo exhibition at eye lounge\, Cyd Peroni presents a new series of gold leaf images that explores solitude and vulnerability that came about as she looked for beauty and some sense of control during Covid-19 restrictions. Peroni’s gilded photographs become metaphors for love\, loss\, perseverance\, hope\, and gratitude. \nThe title of the exhibition is inspired by a quote from the novel “Slaughterhouse-Five” by Kurt Vonnegut: “Here we are\, trapped in the amber of the moment. There is no why.” Trying to understand that there aren’t always easy answers\, her photographs evoke a sense of singularity and resilience.

SUMMARY:Christy Wittmer – Impermanent Monuments
DESCRIPTION:Balancing experimentation with skilled craft Christy Wittmer creates sculptures that challenge expectations of function and notions of stability. \nHer intricate porcelain forms are records of time\, skill\, and the process of making. Broken objects are repaired because they are needed or valued. Found objects are inconsequential debris that are collected and given purpose. The time spent in making\, repairing\, and finding becomes an act of caring embedded in the work. \nWittmer arranges\, assembles\, and stacks these materials\, which are held together by the weight of one object supporting another. As these precarious compositions are navigated\, the observer becomes hyperaware of their own body in the space\, and anxiety increases. The tenuous stability of the work acknowledges the temporary equilibrium of the present moment.
