SUMMARY:Virtual Workshop: Chinese Calligraphy with He Jiancheng
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual workshop with artist He Jiancheng! \nArtist He Jiancheng demonstrates the ancient Chinese art of calligraphy in this workshop\, presented live from the artist’s studio in China. He Jiancheng’s artworks are on view in the Walsh Gallery in the exhibition SEEING IS BELIEVING: Crossings and Transpositions\, Part II (January 21-March 5\, 2022). \nPlease note: this event is streaming only.  \nAbout SEEING IS BELIEVING: CROSSINGS AND TRANSPOSITIONS\, PART II: This exhibition\, organized by Professor of Studio Art Jo Yarrington\, features work by five contemporary Chinese artists: He Jiancheng\, Xiao Yao Ning\, Luo Biwu\, Zuo Zeng Yao and Zhang Zeng Min. Yarrington travelled to China in 2019 with four other American artists\, where they presented Part I of this international exchange. \nAbout ink/stone: This exhibition presents works by Chinese artists from the 20th and 21st centuries who engage with ink and stone as materials\, subjects\, and concepts. Employing a range of techniques and media\, the artists make diverse points of contact with older Chinese artistic traditions. Some embrace the emphasis on ink brushstrokes on paper or silk to render mountainous landscapes or rock forms; others incorporate media and styles usually associated with western painting: oil on canvas\, or gouache and watercolor. Yet others use photography\, industrial processes of fabrication\, or create conceptual and performance art. The contemporary works are shown together with older stone objects such as Buddhist steles\, a scholar’s rock\, and inkstones\, which provide historical touchpoints for the artists’ reinterpretations of these forms and media. The exhibition is curated by Ive Covaci\, PhD\, Adjunct Professor of Art History at Fairfield University.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual tour of our exhibition which will be on view in the Walsh Gallery September 18 – December 18\, 2021! \nPlease visit the Eventbrite page to select tickets then watch this event live via https://quickcenter.fairfield.edu/thequicklive/ \nJoin Dalila Scruggs\, PhD for a virtual tour of Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects. Scruggs served as Curator of Programs for the exhibition\, and is Educator and Curator at the Brooklyn Museum. \nAbout the exhibition: In Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects\, Weems focuses on the humanity denied in recent killings of black men\, women\, and children by police. She directs our attention to the constructed nature of racial identity—specifically\, representations that associate black bodies with criminality. Our imaginings have real—often deadly—outcomes. Blocks of color obscure faces just as our assumptions around race obscure individual humanity. Through a formal language of blurred images\, color blocks\, stated facts\, and meditative narration\, Weems directs our attention toward the repeated pattern of judicial inaction—the repeated denials and the repeated lack of acknowledgement. \nThis exhibition is organized by LSU Museum of Art in collaboration with LSU College of Art + Design\, and LSU School of Art. At the Fairfield University Art Museum\, this exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the #UNLOAD Foundation. The Mary and Eliza Freeman Center for History and Community is a community partner for the museum’s programming this fall. Learn more about the exhibition here.

SUMMARY:Art in Focus: Roberto Lugo\, "Vengo dal Ghetto: AOC"
DESCRIPTION:Our virtual Art in Focus series offers the opportunity for a close look at a single work of art! \nPlease visit the Eventbrite page to select tickets then watch this event live via https://quickcenter.fairfield.edu/thequicklive/ \nDrop in to the Bellarmine Hall Galleries Tuesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to check out this piece in Roberto Lugo: New Ceramics. What do you want to know? Send your questions to Michelle DiMarzo\, Curator of Education and Academic Engagement (mdimarzo@fairfield.edu) and then join the virtual conversation! \nAbout the exhibition: Self-described “ghetto potter” Roberto Lugo uses porcelain\, a medium traditionally reserved for the wealthy\, to explore inequality and racial and social justice. His work often takes familiar shapes drawn from European and Asian ceramic traditions\, including ginger jars\, amphorae\, and teapots\, but their hand-painted surfaces take inspiration from street art and feature contemporary iconography\, including celebrations of Black and Latino figures. A number of the pieces in this exhibition\, which features all-new work\, also incorporate gun parts from decommissioned handguns obtained in a Connecticut gun buyback sponsored by #UNLOAD Foundation. \nThis exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the #UNLOAD Foundation. The Mary and Eliza Freeman Center for History and Community is a community partner for the museum’s programming this fall. Learn more about the exhibition here.

SUMMARY:Virtual Gallery Talk: Robert Gerhardt
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by Robert Gerhardt\, whose exhibition Mic Check is on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries September 17 – December 18! \nPlease visit the Eventbrite page to select tickets then watch this event live via https://quickcenter.fairfield.edu/thequicklive/ \nAbout the exhibition: Robert Gerhardt: Mic Check is a photography project by photojournalist and writer Robert Gerhardt\, who relied on the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag to track and document these protests in New York City over the last seven years. This remarkable body of work includes photographs of protests from 2014 through 2021\, across New York\, in massive crowds\, in rain and sun\, during night and day\, in motion during marches and stationary during speeches\, and in the past year in the midst of a global pandemic. These candid works capture the passion\, righteous anger\, and frustration of the protestors. The title comes from the shouts of “mic check!” which mobilized protestors into a game of repeat-after-me\, a technique that united the crowd and enabled the spread of the speaker’s comments and instructions without amplification.

SUMMARY:Subscription Lecture Series: Titian: Early Mythologies to Late Poesie
DESCRIPTION:Join Fiona Garland for a special three part lecture series! \nPlease visit the Eventbrite page to purchase tickets prior to the first lecture. \nTitian was 60 years old when he first met the 21-year-old Prince Philip II\, heir to the Hapsburg Empire. Over the course of nearly 30 years\, Philip would be Titian’s most important patron\, allowing him a remarkable amount of creative freedom to realize his individual genius. From this relationship came some of the most famous works of Titian’s long career and the six mythological paintings\, known as poesie\, that are the center of the exhibition coming to the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum in Boston\, Titian: Love\, Desire\, Death. \nIn this three-part lecture series\, we will examine Titian’s mythological paintings from his early years to these final works\, when he was pushing the boundaries of painting itself\, delving ever deeper into issues of love\, desire and death. \nYour ticket will be good for each lecture on October 6\, 13\, and 20. \nA Zoom link will be sent out a week before the first lecture.

SUMMARY:Virtual Gallery Talk: Roberto Lugo
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk by artist Roberto Lugo\, whose exhibition will be on view in Bellarmine Hall Galleries September 18 – December 18\, 2021! \nPlease visit the Eventbrite page to select tickets then watch this event live via https://quickcenter.fairfield.edu/thequicklive/ \nAbout the exhibition: Self-described “ghetto potter” Roberto Lugo uses porcelain\, a medium traditionally reserved for the wealthy\, to explore inequality and racial and social justice.

SUMMARY:Virtual Opening Conversation: Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this virtual opening night conversation! \nPlease visit the Eventbrite page to select tickets then watch this event live via https://quickcenter.fairfield.edu/thequicklive/ \nCourtney Taylor will discuss her experience curating Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects at the Louisiana State University Museum of Art\, where she is Curator and Director of Public Programs. She will be joined for a conversation by Dalila Scruggs\, Educator and Curator at the Brooklyn Museum. This event is part of the Edwin L. Weisl\, Jr. Lectureships in Art History\, funded by the Robert Lehman Foundation.

SUMMARY:Lost Birds & Second Chances
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate and acknowledge Earth Day\, join the Fairfield University Art Museum and Greenwich Audubon Center for a special virtual program to highlight our earth’s most fragile creatures. Our vanished species not only tell us stories of the past but send us a plea to prevent the same fate from falling on other species. The National Audubon Society was formed out of the desire to halt the inevitable extinction of birds being harvested for the use of feathers and new challenges exist in birds’ lives to this day. \nTo give insight into the natural history of our extinct bird species\, Greenwich Audubon naturalist Ryan MacLean will lead a virtual tour through artist Todd McGrain’s Lost Bird sculptures which are currently displayed outside the Fairfield University Art Museum. This monumental collection features five sculptures of bird species that have disappeared forever and serve as memorials to them in the locations which they were last seen in the wild. Not only will you hear information on each species’ demise but also life history information\, biology and information on similar species to these extinct birds that are still found in Connecticut. We will also talk about the valuable lessons we have learned in the conservation efforts to protect these and other birds that have received a second chance at survival. You will get to see some of the Greenwich Audubon Center’s preserved specimens of several of these species whose lives balance on the brink if we don’t act to protect them. \nAs an incredibly special treat we will also be joined live by Todd McGrain who will detail his work creating the Lost Bird sculptures and his inspiration to promote awareness for the protection of our threatened species. Each species has a story to tell and more importantly a role in helping to maintain our thriving and healthy ecosystem for us as people. Through these pieces of art they also serve as a monument not only to species we lost\, but as a reminder that we stand to lose countless more birds if action is not taken. \nThis program is in collaboration with the current exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks. \nTo learn more about the Lost Birds Project please visit: http://www.lostbird.org/project/the-lost-bird-project/ \nNature enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels are welcome! \nThis event will be live on the Greenwich Audubon Center’s Facebook page on Thursday\, April 22 at 3:30 PM.

SUMMARY:Painters and Poets: Unity of Nature Past and Present
DESCRIPTION:Join poet Kay Cosgrove for a virtual webinar on Wednesday\, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. \nThe emphasis on the natural world is an ever-present theme for American poets and painters. Through the eyes of these poets and painters\, we discover the captivating beauty of the American landscape. Kay Cosgrove takes us through a journey into America’s earliest poets from the 19th century\, where landscape was used to emphasize American land and language\, to the 20th century where the ecopoetic movement arose. Through the understanding of poets and artists\, we learn just how extraordinary land is\, and why we need to preserve it on the canvas and the page. \nLearn more about Kay Cosgrove here! \nThis event is hosted by the Quick Center of the Arts and in affiliation with the Art History & Visual Culture Program. \nLearn more about the event and how to watch on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tour of "Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks"
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for spring\, join museum director and curator of the exhibition Carey Mack Weber and curator of education & academic engagement Michelle DiMarzo ’07 for a special virtual tour of this stunning exhibition\, featuring avian artwork and natural history specimens from the early 19th century through the present day. \nHighlights of the exhibition\, which Weber co-curated with three members of Fairfield’s Biology department\, include Marsden Hartley’s oil painting Give Us This Day and Paul Villinski’s whimsical Long Playing Birds formed from vinyl LP records\, as well as a skeleton of the extinct Great Auk\, and Elizabeth Turk’s 3D-printed soundwaves of the calls of the bald eagle and now-extinct Carolina parakeet. \nAn interdisciplinary effort like no other in the museum’s 10-year history\, the exhibition demonstrates the ways in which art and science can join forces to raise awareness not only of the importance of saving bird habitats\, but the preservation of our broader natural environment. \nAfter registering on Eventbrite\, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a Zoom registration link. Please click on the link and sign up to receive the meeting information and Zoom link in order to join the tour. \nCheck out the virtual exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks here.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: Nature’s Best Hope
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 23rd\, at 5 p.m. Douglas Tallamy\, Professor of Entomology at University of Delaware\, will give a virtual lecture. Dr. Douglas Tallamy will give a virtual lecture titled “Nature’s Best Hope”\, which is the title of his best-selling book about a new approach to conservation which starts in your backyard. Homeowners everywhere can turn their yards into conservation corridors that provide wildlife habitats. Because this approach relies on the initiatives of private individuals\, it is immune from the whims of government policy. Even more important\, it’s practical\, effective\, and easy—you will walk away with specific suggestions you can incorporate into your own yard. \nThis event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks. Learn more about the exhibition here. \nPresented in partnership with the Department of Biology. The Pequot Library\, Southport\, Connecticut Audubon Society-Fairfield Region\, and the Greenwich Audubon Center are community partners for this exhibition and its related programming. \n  \nLearn more about the event and how to watch on Eventbrite.
