SUMMARY:Virtual Tour of "Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks"
DESCRIPTION:Just in time for spring\, join museum director and curator of the exhibition Carey Mack Weber and curator of education & academic engagement Michelle DiMarzo ’07 for a special virtual tour of this stunning exhibition\, featuring avian artwork and natural history specimens from the early 19th century through the present day. \nHighlights of the exhibition\, which Weber co-curated with three members of Fairfield’s Biology department\, include Marsden Hartley’s oil painting Give Us This Day and Paul Villinski’s whimsical Long Playing Birds formed from vinyl LP records\, as well as a skeleton of the extinct Great Auk\, and Elizabeth Turk’s 3D-printed soundwaves of the calls of the bald eagle and now-extinct Carolina parakeet. \nAn interdisciplinary effort like no other in the museum’s 10-year history\, the exhibition demonstrates the ways in which art and science can join forces to raise awareness not only of the importance of saving bird habitats\, but the preservation of our broader natural environment. \nAfter registering on Eventbrite\, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a Zoom registration link. Please click on the link and sign up to receive the meeting information and Zoom link in order to join the tour. \nCheck out the virtual exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks here.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: Nature’s Best Hope
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, March 23rd\, at 5 p.m. Douglas Tallamy\, Professor of Entomology at University of Delaware\, will give a virtual lecture. Dr. Douglas Tallamy will give a virtual lecture titled “Nature’s Best Hope”\, which is the title of his best-selling book about a new approach to conservation which starts in your backyard. Homeowners everywhere can turn their yards into conservation corridors that provide wildlife habitats. Because this approach relies on the initiatives of private individuals\, it is immune from the whims of government policy. Even more important\, it’s practical\, effective\, and easy—you will walk away with specific suggestions you can incorporate into your own yard. \nThis event is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks. Learn more about the exhibition here. \nPresented in partnership with the Department of Biology. The Pequot Library\, Southport\, Connecticut Audubon Society-Fairfield Region\, and the Greenwich Audubon Center are community partners for this exhibition and its related programming. \n  \nLearn more about the event and how to watch on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Observing Birds: Appearance\, Sounds\, and Behaviors
DESCRIPTION:Join the Greenwich Audubon Center for a discussion on the art of observing birds! \nThis event will be hosted live on the Greenwich Audubon Center’s Facebook. \nWhen observing birds\, there is often more than meets the eye. Whether you enjoy photographing\, drawing\, or painting birds\, or you just enjoy the company of birds\, it is helpful to understand birds’ overall natural histories. This includes their appearance\, behaviors\, calls\, materials they use for their nests\, habitats they spend time in\, flight patterns\, and how they interact with their environment. \nIn this virtual program\, Audubon Bird Education Specialist Ryan MacLean will bring you outside to observe and listen for birds. He will also show you specimens such as bird nests to gain a greater contextual understanding of them. We will also explain how you can contribute to the conservation of many of our bird species by participating in seasonal bird counts while you observe them. \nNot only can we gain a greater understanding and appreciation of these birds by unlocking the secrets to their lives\, but we can also help create a better future for their existence. This program is a special collaboration between Greenwich Audubon and the Fairfield University Art Museum\, and is presented as part of their Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks exhibition and program offerings. \nMake sure to also check out the Fairfield University Art Museum’s virtual exhibition\, Birds of the Northeast: Gulls to Great Auks: https://www.fairfield.edu/museum/birdsofthenortheast/

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: Theater & Fashion in the Photography of Lalla Essaydi
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, January 28th\, at 6 p.m. for the opening night lecture for By Design: Theater and Fashion in the Photography of Lalla Essaydi\, presented by the exhibition curator Cynthia Becker\, Associate Professor of African Art History and the History of Art and Architecture Department at Boston University. \nBy Design: Theater and Fashion in the Photography of Lalla Essaydi explores the artistic process behind the creation of Essaydi’s carefully staged photographs\, which deconstruct and reimagine stereotypes of Muslim womanhood. Guest Curator Cynthia Becker has selected approximately 20 works spanning Essaydi’s career for inclusion in this groundbreaking exhibition. Becker notes that\, “This is the first time an exhibition has emphasized fashion and staging in Essaydi’s work …[she] might spend months creating a single garment to be worn in one of her carefully crafted tableaus. She spends hours arranging her models and\, in the process\, recreates the familial bonds so important to Moroccan women’s lives.” \nBorn in Morocco\, Lalla Essaydi lived in Saudi Arabia for many years and studied painting and photography at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She currently lives between New York and Morocco. Her time in Morocco also exposed her to the nation’s rich history of architectural design and the ceremonial occasions so important to daily life\, both of which are featured in her photographs. Learn more about the exhibition here. \nLearn more about the event and how to watch here! \nThis event is part of the Edwin L. Weisl\, Jr. Lectureships in Art History\, funded by the Robert Lehman Foundation.

SUMMARY:Online Opening Conversation: Ruby Sky Stiler: Group Relief
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Ruby Sky Stiler and exhibition curator and Director of the Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College\, Ian Berry on Thursday\, September 10th at 6 p.m. for the opening night virtual conversation! \nThroughout her multifaceted practice\, Stiler pulls references from Greco-Roman antiquity\, Art Deco illustrations\, and the varied dialects of twentieth-century abstraction. Her sculpture and wall-based works often take shape as archaeological reconstructions; female and male nudes\, amphorae\, and mosaic patterning are all repeating motifs. Though much of the artist’s visual language is rooted in the ancient past\, Stiler’s use of materials is distinctly contemporary: she often incorporates plaster\, paper\, acrylic resin\, glue\, graphite\, stained wood\, and air brush into her work. Her signature wall reliefs are rhythmic puzzles\, drawing attention equally to their surfaces and to the discrete shapes contained within; accumulating colors\, patterns and textures to create dense portraits or geometric configurations. Each shard of the mosaic carries its own history\, oftentimes visible in daily notes scrawled in pencil\, or of drafting marks which display the artist’s hand. This play between material and authenticity establishes a tension between high and low\, past and present. \nRecently\, Stiler’s work has expanded to include the subject of father and child. The dearth of art historical precedent for depictions of men displaying emotional intimacy\, or being defined by their relationship to their children\, is in stark contrast to the abundant impressions of mother and child. Stiler attempts to upend these cultural and historical assumptions and stereotypes by depicting the role of father as the “nurturer” and “maternal\,” while her female figures often stand alone\, in proximity to the family unit\, but not being defined by it. \nThe exhibition will include new functional sculptures which are positioned around the gallery and assume the role of a museum ‘viewing bench.’ Here\, the bench is comprised of reduced\, gestural lines in space that resemble human figures\, cut from wood. Stiler’s benches straddle the space between utilitarian form and sculptural object\, inviting viewers to sit and consider their own bodies in relation to the exhibition space\, the artwork that surrounds them\, as well as the sculptural bodies that support their own physical ones. Berry says\, “Stiler’s benches\, which she began making well before our current pandemic experience\, now take on new meanings with regard to gathering and rest. Could they be of comfort in a time of distancing? Her reclining female figures and relaxing fathers and children seem to be at ease\, and might offer us quiet company as we rest\, one at a time\, in the gallery.” \nCheck out the exhibition at fairfield.edu/museum/rubyskystiler/ \nRegister on Eventbrite for the link to the conversation!
