SUMMARY:Talya Baharal | SHAPE OF A LANGUAGE | Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:First Street Gallery is pleased to present Shape of A Language\, a solo exhibition of abstract\npaintings by Talya Baharal.\nTalya Baharal’s paintings explore the journey and shaping of her abstract painter’s voice.\nUnintended compositions are seen\, absorbed and re-imagined in the language of abstraction.\nWhether looking at asphalt road repairs or broken ice sheets hovering over a receding river\,\nnoticing a humble mended seam on a garment or a mangled wire on a trash heap – all seem to\nbecome part of Baharal’s imaginary scape; part of her vocabulary of abstraction.\n“Excavating and disturbing surfaces\, whether metaphorically or physically\, have been an\nongoing theme in all my work. Revealing visual remnants of the struggles and the discoveries\nare at the essence of my painting path. I paint for those moments of clarity. I paint for the\ntimes that I find the courage to destroy and rebuild. I paint to feel alive.” *\nIn Baharal’s previous work as a sculptor and maker of wearable objects\, she mainly drew upon\nthe visual language of vulnerability and decay. Much of her attention to shapes of vessels\, \nstructures of contained chaos and the mapping of imaginary scapes is carried over in her\npaintings. Acrylic paint\, ink and other mixed media are her materials of choice. Torn paintings\nand images of previous sculptures used as collage material activate many of her compositions.\nA dialog between the paint\, ink markings and the collage create a rich language of layered lines \nthat intersect expanses of paint. The changing character of lines that appear\, disappear and re-\nappear reveal the armature that connects the composition. Baharal’s work is deeply rooted in \nexcavating the personal journey of a painter’s voice unearthing its vocabulary.\nTalya Baharal lives and and paints in her studio in the Hudson Valley\, NY. Born in Tel Aviv\,\nIsrael. Raised there and in London she moved to NYC in 1979. Widely recognized\, exhibited and\npublished as a studio art jeweler and sculptor for over three decades\, she is the recipient of a\nNYFA fellowship\, other grants and awards. Baharal was a juror on NYFA sculpture/craft panel\nand the curator of a book on contemporary art jewelry. While living in Maine for a few years\,\nshe began focusing exclusively on painting and studied with Steve Aimone. Upon her return to\nNew York she studied with Fran O’Neill and John Lees at the NY Studio School. A solo exhibition\nof her paintings “Raw Ink – Blue Paint” was exhibited at Five Points Art Center Gallery in\nTorrington\, CT in 2021. Shape of A Language\, her upcoming exhibition in February 2023 at First\nStreet Gallery is her first solo painting exhibition in NYC. Her paintings were part of several\ngroup shows in Chelsea\, Connecticut and the Hudson Valley. Baharal is represented in CA by\nLulo Gallery in Healdsburg\, Sonoma\, where a solo exhibition is scheduled for November 2023. \n* Talya Baharal – statement.

SUMMARY:Edge of Jungles and Seeds of the Cloud
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a dual showing of works by Swiss-born artists Rosemarie Schiller and Thomas Bühler. Both artists share life and many journeys together\, yet in their art each maintains their own signature style\, expression\, as well as mediums. \nThe works shown are an expression of both artists’ deep connection with the natural world and ancient beginnings. Frequent travels ‘South of the Border’ and camping out in remote areas for long stretches of time have shaped their perception and view of time and being. \nGuitarist Koh Kazama will be playing from 4:30-5pm.

SUMMARY:Hank Feely - According to Gongsun Long (Recent Paintings)
DESCRIPTION:Gongsun Long was a Chinese philosopher who lived from 320 to 250 BC during the Zhou dynasty. He was known for postulating paradoxes including his most famous: “White horses are not horses.” He believed that pure logic may lead to absurd conclusions. Hank Feeley believes that the world we currently live in and his paintings pretty much bear out the truth of Mr. Long. \nThis show includes some of Feeley’s typical non sequitur paradoxical works but it also includes some different work that came as the result of the isolation of the pandemic. To amuse himself during the pandemic he experimented with different styles\, contents and mediums. Some of these finished works are in the show as well as some of the preliminary sketches and drawings leading to them. Also in the show are amusing collage portraits that he did\, again\, on a pandemic fueled whim. \nAll in all\, it’s work like this that caused Billy Collins to write:\n“If Hank Feeley were not so strikingly original\, I would say that he stands at the intersection of Magritte and Marvel Comics\, but as it is\, he has his own way of disorienting the viewer so we can see again\, now with our perception refreshed.”

SUMMARY:Suzi Evalenko | Dialogues & Marion Held | Unease
DESCRIPTION:FIRST STREET GALLERY is pleased to present Dialogues\, an exhibition of recent oil and mixed media paintings and collage by New York artist Suzi Evalenko. This is the artist’s eighth solo exhibition at First Street. \nReturning to the genre of still life (in the main) in her new show\, Evalenko also returns to a decades-long engagement with themes that tap into the artist’s personal history. The show’s title refers to two dialogues that are going on simultaneously in these works. \nThe first conversation\, between the past and the present\, is carried by two objects: a long Turcomen wrapping band of the kind used by nomads to secure tent poles and other gear; and a glazed two-handled earthenware lamp with its ‘hands’ planted on its graceful curves – feminine\, yet resolute. Treasured possessions that the artist has lived with since her earliest childhood memories\, these tokens of family and home remain sources of inspiration and invention\, painted often\, since her first oil of the lamp in 1976 (on view). \nThe second dialogue continues Evalenko’s exploration of the tension and interplay of figurative content and abstracted imagery: cut from unrelated oils and other media\, breaking through the painted still life or hovering on its own planes; flat elements juxtaposing volumetric depiction; mirrored content that is simultaneously solid background and reflected foreground\, defying easy apprehension of the enclosed space. Rich color and movement\, hallmarks of Evalenko’s work\, abound. \nSee more of her work here\, and on Artsy.net\nGallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday\, 11am – 6pm\nSpecial Exhibition Hours: Sunday\, May 15\, 1 – 5 pm\nArtist also present in the Gallery on Saturday\, April 30\, May 7 and May 21\, 2 – 5pm \nFIRST STREET GALLERY is pleased to present Unease\, an exhibition of sculpture and drawings by Marion Held on view from April 26 through May 21\, 2022. \nMarion Held’s mixed media sculptures are filled with stories the works can tell or suggest\, hovering between the deeply personal and the universal\, the real and the imaginary. The work Pale Memory\, for example\, consists of a length of silk\, printed with ambiguous biological images\, caught in the machinery of an antique clothes wringer. It is evocative of timelessness\, memory\, corporeal and spiritual matters—concepts and themes that are central to Held’s artistic explorations. Held works with a wide variety of materials\, natural and handmade\, cast\, sculpted\, printed\, sewn\, drawn\, found\, and repurposed. The incongruous elements are juxtaposed in playful and unexpected ways\, inviting the viewer to add to the story the work conveys. \nIn this exhibition appropriately named Unease\, Held’s drawings are a visceral response to the pandemic of the past two years. Suggestive of enigmatic organisms\, they are created in charcoal\, micron pen\, graphite\, and watercolor\, and reflect the uncertainty and angst of life during COVID-19.\nHeld has exhibited widely in the US and internationally\, including Canada\, Japan\, Senegal\, Israel\, Poland\, and Spain. Selected reviews of her work are published in The New York Times\, Newark Star Ledger\, Sculpture magazine\, Art and Visual Perception\, NY Arts\, American Ceramics\, and more. She lives in the greater NY metropolitan area and is exhibiting at First Street Gallery for the first time.\nSpecial Gallery Hours for this Exhibition: Sunday May 15\, 2-5pm\nThe Artist will also be in the Gallery: Saturday April 30\, May 7 and May 21\, 2-5 pm

SUMMARY:Leslie Adler | Patient Garden
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception for Leslie Adler’s Exhibition\, Patient Garden. \nFirst Street Gallery in Chelsea is pleased to present PATIENT GARDEN\, a solo exhibition by Artist Leslie Adler. Patient Garden expresses the form and the formless as nature\, color and contrast through printmaking sculpture and painting. \nPatient Garden consists of a series of same size hand-pulled prints\, each with a combination of a black and white form paired with a colorful iconic shape. Some of the pieces include iconography as well. There is a series of a small ceramic sculptures each paired with a hand-made paper object and a pair of complimentary\, acrylic paintings on linen. There are a few additional individual interesting pieces such as a geometrically shaped collage framed in red string. \n“My living Room is a Garden” \nDuring COVID and quarantine we were forced to stay in our inner\, and outer\, personal gardens. Although we could tender our space with patience and care\, we often let our gardens suffer. Distancing ourselves from all forms of nature has given us a false sense of security. We have been forced to recognize our lack of attentiveness and our impatience. \nLeslie’s work has been featured in many states in the U.S. as well as in Paris. She has been in dozens of exhibitions and has won several awards for works on paper\, painting\, and collage as well as photography. Leslie works in a studio across the Hudson in New Jersey at Manufactures Warehouse Village. \nFor further information about Leslie Adler’s work\, including dates and times for any open studio events\, exhibitions or to schedule a studio visit\, please visit her website at www.leslieadlerfineart.com. SUMMARY:Tim Kennedy | Social Contrasts
DESCRIPTION:Social Contracts is Tim Kennedy’s ninth solo exhibition at First Street Gallery. The subjects for his paintings are found in the benign settings of Midwestern public parks where anodyne activities such as fishing and camping occur. But the exhibition title hints at the darker\, hyper divided atmosphere which pervades American life today and the uneasy tensions which live just beneath the surface of appearances. Mr. Kennedy’s paintings of these ostensibly pacific subjects require an undergirding of assumptions of civility and acceptance that we sometimes take for granted and which in recent times seems at risk. That is the hidden subject of this group of paintings. The exhibition runs from March 1 to 26\, 2022.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: 2021 Annual Affiliates Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Thursday\, December 2nd\, 6-8PM \n  \nMichele BonDurant My art is anchored in looking. My paintings and collages are based on observation. An economy of expression and the role that color plays is the focus of my work. \nMy motivation is to manipulate color\, shape\, composition and subject matter in such a way that it engages the viewer and invites closer investigation and interpretation. \n  \nGilles Giuntini ‘s collage pieces are a product of the imposed isolation and consequent focus that Corona has granted us. They attempt to break away from more established conventions of collage. At their core the pieces are about contradictions both natural and political; contradictions inherent in the profound state of transition in which he believes we currently find ourselves. \n  \nKathy A. Moore paints and draws from intense visual observation based on the still life motif. Her intent is to place the viewer within her immediate visual perspective\, as if the viewer is present\, stepping out of a spectator role. Within each still life\, she aspires to convey a luminous\, quiet\, and intimate order. \n  \nJohn Rohlfing New ceramic vessels. \n  \nCarolyn Sheehan creates art works that are best described by color and images. She combines creativity and imagination with emotions in every piece with the sole purpose of not only creating an aesthetic that impacts the feelings but causes pleasure as well. Every piece is worked like a sculpture which is three dimensional and they take shape in a style in which the icon is always the focal point. \n  \nJane Shoenfeld Although my paintings are grounded in the natural world of forms\, movement\, and light\, much of my work is abstract and invokes the world of dreams. I alter colors to express emotion. Vivid hues\, kinesthetic mark making\, and the resonance of layers\, both literal and metaphoric\, characterize my pastel paintings.

SUMMARY:John Rohlfing | Past Presence
DESCRIPTION:FIRST STREET GALLERY is pleased to present Past Presence by John Rohlfing\, on view from September 7 through October 2. \n“This latest group of works was inspired by a piece I made as an undergraduate student in 1975 at Texas Tech University. I love the pieces freshness and spontaneity; the work takes me to a time and a place that is still in my heart when youthful inexperience and exuberance guided my artmaking.” \nSee more of John’s work here.
