SUMMARY:"Show Us Your Hearts" Opening - Curated by HARVEY FIERSTEIN and ALYSON VEGA
DESCRIPTION:Harvey Fierstein and Alyson Vega Curate “Show Us Your Hearts” at Fountain House Gallery  \nOn view: January 25 – March 13\, 2024    \nReception: January 25\, 6-8pm \nNEW YORK CITY – Fountain House Gallery – the premier venue in New York City representing artists living with mental illness – today announced the upcoming group exhibition Show Us Your Hearts. The show will open with a Reception on January 25\, 2024\, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm\, and will remain on view through March 13\, 2024. Fountain House Gallery is located at 702 Ninth Avenue in Manhattan. \nShow Us Your Hearts is curated by Harvey Fierstein and Alyson Vega. Fierstein is an award-winning writer\, actor\, gay rights activist\, and artist. Vega is a Fountain House Gallery artist.   \nFountain House Gallery Director Rachel Weisman said\, “Show Us Your Hearts asks artists to consider the vast visual history of the heart as a symbol – and its connotations. Some artists\, such as Mario Fontenla\, Elizabeth Roberts\, and Susan Spangenberg have packed their compositions with colorful depictions of a stylized heart symbol. Despite this\, these artists were able to create works that avoid feeling saccharine. Other artists\, like Issa Ibrahim\, boldly exclude the heart entirely by depicting a body flayed – devoid of all organs – on an operating table. Exhibiting for the first time at Fountain House Gallery\, AG Davis\, Nicolaus J. Myers\, and TWST embrace a highly energetic interpretation of the theme\, encouraging the eye to bounce from corner to corner.” \nWeisman continued\, “Inviting outside curators and visionaries to engage with our artists is a rewarding opportunity to bring new perspectives and frameworks into our space. These unique collaborations not only benefit our artists but also offer our collectors and supporters a chance to see the expansive technical and conceptual skill set of our Gallery roster. We are deeply grateful to Harvey Fierstein for his support and to Fountain House Gallery artist Alyson Vega for her commitment to this exhibition.” \nThis program is funded\, in part\, by generous support from the Renate\, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust\, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund. \nCurator Statement by Harvey Fierstein   \nThe call went out\, “Show us your heart.” \nWhether the artists wanted to tell us who they are\, or who they love\, who they’ve lost\, or what makes them tick\, they were invited to create and submit artwork on the theme. The only requirement was that somewhere\, somehow\, a representation of a heart had to exist within their pieces.   \nThe heart has been used to communicate\, express or simply record human observation since cave drawings. From the simplest commercial Valentine to Frida Kahlo’s statement of the excruciating pain of life\, the heart is immediately recognized and identified with. It has been employed to convey joy\, pain\, sadness\, hope and even geography – “The heart of town.” “The heart of the nation.” “I give you my heart.” “The heart of the problem.” “My heart is broken.” “You’re heartless.” “At the heart of it all.” “My heart goes with you.” What other simple shape can be assigned so many meanings to every one of us? \nNot surprisingly the call for work was answered with a mind-boggling panoply of emotional statements\, personal history and even political commentary. The media the artists employed were as wide-ranging as the ideas they were expressing. We were presented with works in oil\, watercolor\, acrylic\, fabric\, crayon\, collage\, woodcut\, photography and digital imagery. It was a thrilling and astounding harvest of work. \nLet me say that I have never been comfortable rating one artist’s output against another’s. All art\, in my view\, is valid. I was once greatly chastised by writer Irene Fornés for saying such a thing. But this is how I feel and how I usually operate. But faced with this fascinating\, almost overwhelming\, array of pieces\, and knowing the constraints of the Gallery space\, I sought to choose as wide a variety of expression as possible. I wanted to give every visitor to this exhibition the greatest chance to fall in love with a work of art. That was how I measured and sorted the pieces. \nHard as I tried\, such selections are never perfect\, but I hope that you will find in this explosion of talent a window into each of the artists who answered the call. They’ve offered their truths\, as artists do\, to show you their hearts. \n–Harvey Fierstein  \nCurator Statement by Alyson Vega  \nA show about hearts has been a dream of mine for over 30 years. Harvey Fierstein’s brother Ron used to be my sister Suzanne’s manager. A chance meeting at a fundraiser brought us together. We connected quickly over our mutual love of quilting. (I may have invited myself over to his home to use his long-armed quilting machine.) Harvey complimented my artwork on Instagram and I worked up the nerve to ask him to co-curate the show with me for Fountain House Gallery. \nMr. Fierstein\, having never curated a show before\, was reluctant at first. I begged\, pleaded\, cajoled\, appealed to his love of the arts and impeccable taste before finally winning him over. We worked together to create a call for work\, combining my concept with his vision. He shared the call with the artists and a spark was lit.Show Us Your Hearts is truly a labor of love. Harvey and I occasionally disagreed on minor semantic issues and he did all of the heavy lifting. I fielded numerous questions from the artists after the call came out. My response was always what Harvey had told me: Put your full self into the art. The results are magnificent and overwhelming. I am grateful to have had the chance to learn from him and to work with him. Harvey curated the pieces selected for the show and I am so pleased with the selection. He did not want to reject anything. Harvey Fierstein’s heart is art. Seeing my vision realized fills my heart with joy\, love\, and gratitude. \n–Alyson Vega  \nAbout Harvey Fierstein   \nHARVEY FIERSTEIN is an award-winning artist\, author\, actor and gay rights activist. Moviegoers know him for roles in MRS DOUBTFIRE\, INDEPENDENCE DAY\, BULLETS OVER BROADWAY\, THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK and others. TV appearances have included SESAME STREET\, CHEERS\, HAIRSPRAY LIVE\, MURDER SHE WROTE\, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE\, and countless talk show gigs. His stage roles have included his Tony Award-winning turns in HAIRSPRAY\, TORCH SONG TRILOGY\, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF\, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. He’s received Tony Awards and nominations for writing KINKY BOOTS\, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES\, NEWSIES\, HAIRSPRAY\, A CATERED AFFAIR\, and CASA VALENTINA among others. Trained as an artist at THE HIGH SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN\, THE BROOKLYN MUSEUM SCHOOL\, and PRATT INSTITUTE\, he is currently deeply immersed in quilt making. His memoir\, I WAS BETTER LAST NIGHT\, is a NY Times Best Seller. \nAbout Alyson Vega  \nALYSON VEGA is a Puerto Rican fiber artist who taught herself to sew at a young age. Born in New York City in 1962\, she received an AB in Japanese Folklore and Mythology from Harvard University. After teaching math for over 20 years\, Alyson sustained a brain injury that ended her career; at the same time\, she developed an urgency to create. No longer able to follow a pattern\, she made assemblages with whatever she could find. Utilizing a wide variety of materials and techniques\, Alyson’s pieces reflect the beauty and order she perceives in a chaotic world. Her work has been shown in a solo exhibition at White Columns and at the Outsider Art Fair\, and is included in numerous private collections. \nAbout Fountain House Gallery and Studio   \nFountain House Gallery and Studio supports the careers and creative visions of contemporary artists living with mental illness. Founded by Fountain House in 2000\, the Gallery sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists\, curators\, and cultural institutions. The Studio is a collaborative workspace that furthers the professional practice of our artists. Embracing artists who are emerging or established\, trained or self-taught\, Fountain House Gallery cultivates artistic growth\, makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community\, and challenges the stigma surrounding mental illness. \n

SUMMARY:TOYS: Embracing Play
DESCRIPTION:Play is an important part of our cognitive development\, and toys allow that development to flourish while serving as artifacts of our deepest memories. These memories can be reminders of joy and happiness but also trauma\, as toys may have played a part in getting us through difficult moments in our youth. Regardless of what toys elicit in us\, we are drawn to them no matter how old we are\, and in this exhibition the artists excitingly display the various ways this manifests.”

SUMMARY:FUTURES
DESCRIPTION:“FUTURES” – at Fountain House Gallery\, 702 Ninth Avenue at 48th Street\, NYC \nOn view: January 20 – March 2\, 2022 /Reception: January 20\, 6-8pm \nCurated by Barbara Pollack \nPost-2020\, predicting the future is perhaps an antiquated game\, given how the sudden onset of the pandemic surprised all prognosticators. Combining boundless imagination with low-tech materials\, the nearly 20 artists of Futures create a new way of dealing with our hopes\, fears and anxieties\, conjuring visions that cannot be seen through telescopes or crystal balls. From apocalyptic nightmares to over-the-rainbow fantasies\, the artworks in this exhibition underscore the limits of politicians\, scientists and astrologers to find a new way of envisioning imminent change. Only artists\, like these\, seem capable of creating images that are dynamic and capture the diversity of the future\, or more accurately\, “futures\,” since this holds a different meaning for each.  \nFutures is curated by Barbara Pollack\, co-founder of Art at a Time Like This\, a nonprofit platform serving artists and curators in the 21st century\, as they live through crises and comment on social issues; she will serve as the lead curator of Mirror Image: A Transformation of Chinese Identity\, opening at Asia Society in June 2022.   \nCommenting on selected works in the exhibition\, Pollack said\, “Susan Spangenberg’s Octomission creates a vision of a super-powered octopus soaring through the sky\, made using buttons and fabric\, and highlighted by colored pencils and magic markers. Richard Courage has painted his own set of Tarot cards\, such as Eve entwined with a snake in The World. Maria Bronkema’s watercolor\, Robbie’s Dream of the Future\, is uplifting – a child’s fantasy of animals let loose from the zoo. Zeus Hope’s intricate drawings of gods and goddesses command attention\, though simply rendered in white gel on black paper.” \nAdditional mediums represented in the show include mixed media\, fabric\, acrylic\, and photography. \nThis program is funded\, in part\, by generous support from the Renate\, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust\, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation\, the David Rockefeller Fund\, and the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund. \nAbout Fountain House Gallery: Fountain House Gallery and Studio provides an environment where artists living with mental illness can express their creative visions and exhibit their work. Founded by Fountain House in 2000\, the Manhattan-based Gallery sells original artworks and collaborates with a wide network of artists\, curators and cultural institutions. The Studio\, located in Long Island City\, is a collaborative workspace that furthers the professional practice of our artists. Embracing artists who are emerging or established\, trained or self-taught\, Fountain House Gallery cultivates artistic growth\, makes a vital contribution to the New York arts community\, and challenges the stigma surrounding mental illness. \nNote: Masks and proof of vaccination are required for entry to Fountain House Gallery. \n

SUMMARY:Art in Quarantine
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on view (online): May 28 – July 8\, 2020\nOpening Reception (via Zoom): May 29\, 2:30-3:30 pm ET \nFountain House Gallery\, representing artists living with mental illness\, announces the group exhibition Art in Quarantine. The show\, which features more than 100 original works\, will be on view online from May 28\, 2020 through July 8\, 2020. An Opening Reception will be held via the Zoom platform on May 29\, 2020\, from 2:30 pm until 3:30 pm ET\, join here. In keeping with the “shelter in place” order necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic\, Fountain House Gallery\, Fountain House Studio\, and parent organization Fountain House are closed until further notice. \nArt in Quarantine showcases works in mediums including acrylic\, watercolor\, oil\, pastel\, mixed media\, digital photography\, and more. In addition to pieces created during the period of sheltering in place\, the exhibition features selected works made previously. \n“During this time of isolation\, the member-artists of Fountain House have explored what ‘art in quarantine’ looks like\,” said Karen Gormandy\, Fountain House Studio Coordinator. “While sheltering in place\, we find ourselves in our own company\, away from the sights\, sounds\, and all sensory memories that informed us that we are connected to each other. We’ve lost track of time and worked at not losing track of ourselves. To reconnect\, we have found ways to make art. Fishing around for tools\, we searched for paper\, paint\, or wire\, old books\, spices for pigment\, scissors\, foil. We examined how we could manifest the artistic impulse. We looked outward or inward for inspiration. We bounced around in our heads and couldn’t focus. Looking inward\, we were confronted with a new fear or a certain beauty. We gazed longingly out the window and wished we could go about our business. We looked in and away from the mirror. We discovered  beauty that was always there—a beauty that lived in our memory or presented itself in front of us\, in our confined present. The mundane became profound. We reached for our art in whatever place we could find it; it was captured\, it was what we wanted or didn’t. It didn’t matter\, it is what we have.” \nThis program is funded\, in part\, by generous support from the Renate\, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust\, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation\, the David Rockefeller Fund\, and the Laurie M. SUMMARY:Small Works: $100 & Under
DESCRIPTION:On view: October 31-December 20\, 2019 \nSmall Works: $100 & Under is an annual Fountain House Gallery exhibition event. For this year’s show\, Gallery artists have created more than 500 original pieces. Each original work is sized 6 by 6 inches or less and is priced at $100 or under. Among the mediums represented are collage\, mixed media\, acrylic and watercolor painting\, digital art\, and photography. Past Fountain House Gallery Small Works shows have been a rousing success with holiday shoppers and collectors. \nFountain House Gallery Director Ariel Willmott said\, “Each year I am surprised by the fantastic variety in the artwork created for the Small Works exhibition. The artists continue to embrace the scaled-down format\, unleashing their talents on fresh mediums and ideas. The exhibit showcases mini-collections of artworks\, giving viewers a unique opportunity to experience individual artists’ breadth of work. And we love offering the pieces at a price point that everyone\, from tourists and students to artists and collectors\, can afford.” \nThis program is funded\, in part\, by generous support from the Hearst Foundation\, Inc.\, the Renate\, Hans and Maria Hofmann Trust\, the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation\, the David Rockefeller Fund\, and the Laurie M.
