SUMMARY:Henry Jabbour: A Certain Rest
DESCRIPTION:Friedrichs Pontone is proud to present A Certain Rest\, a solo exhibition of new works by distinguished artist\, Henry Jabbour. Known for his evocative and poetic approach to painting\, Jabbour’s distinctive\, almost Neo-Expressionist style\, draws on the vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes of the movement\, while imbuing them with a deeply personal and idiosyncratic sensibility. His paintings burst forth with a flamboyant display of exuberance and creative fervor. Liberated from the constraints of representational accuracy\, he fearlessly explores the entire spectrum of burnt oranges\, fiery reds\, cool blues\, acid greens\, citrus yellows\, and opulent violets. It is in this kaleidoscope of color and expressive gesture that Jabbour entreats the viewer to enter into a cacophony of emotion and sensation that transcends the boundaries of language and culture. \n  \nAt the heart of Jabbour’s oeuvre lies his exploration of the complexities of human identity\, particularly as they pertain to issues of cultural heritage\, social belonging\, and personal transformation. Synthesizing the visual languages of abstraction and figuration\, Jabbour creates powerful images that evoke the joys and struggles of a life lived between different worlds. In each of his paintings\, Jabbour demonstrates a remarkable ability to create works that are both deeply personal and universally resonant. Some feature dynamic swirls of color\, with the artist’s brushwork capturing the tension and flux of identity formation. Others are more restrained\, featuring haunting\, stylized figures that speak to Jabbour’s deep interest in the intersection of myth\, memory\, and identity. Taken together\, Jabbour offers a powerful expression of the human condition and the complexity of the world we inhabit. \n  \nSchematic figures populate dreamlike landscapes\, rendered with a luminous tactility. These vestigial and allusive characters engage in everyday activities\, simply walking\, standing\, and sitting; they embody the mundane. However\, as they are placed within shimmering fields and veils of paint\, they undergo a transfiguration that elevates them to a heightened pictorial space. Imbued with a sense of gestural immediacy\, every stroke\, smear\, clump\, and cluster of paint demonstrates a profound engagement with the materiality of the medium. The texture itself is an integral part of the visual narrative\, inviting viewers to not only see but to feel the fluidity and multiplicity of their presence. This approach creates vastly beguiling paintings\, distant yet familiar\, as though entering a half-remembered room. The canvas\, then\, becomes a liminal space between the past and the present\, inviting us to linger in the haze of memory.

SUMMARY:Chris Rivers | Satellite
DESCRIPTION:Friedrichs Pontone is thrilled to present Satellite\, the first solo exhibition in New York of works by British artist Chris Rivers\, featuring a mesmerizing selection of his otherworldly\, stellar skyscapes.  \nRivers’ large-scale paintings are inspired by the natural world and his fascination with the cosmos. His works capture the beauty and majesty of the sky\, from the swirling clouds to the shimmering stars. These paintings are not simply depictions of the natural world\, but rather a reflection of Rivers’ own emotional response to it. Rendered in a sumptuous palette of rich color and a welter of expressive\, gestural handling that is at once abstract and representational\, Rivers conveys the awe-inspiring power of nature and the limitless potential of the universe. \nBorn in 1983 in Manchester\, England\, Chris Rivers began his artistic journey in 2014. As a self-taught painter\, Rivers brings a fresh perspective to the art world. Formerly a professional drummer for UK rock band Heaven’s Basement\, his work is rooted in his background as a musician\, which he infuses into his art through the use of rhythm and movement\, treating the canvas as a drum. Every painting maintains an energetic\, almost frenzied tempo\, tempered by subtle manipulations of technique and pace that captivate and enchant the viewer with their strange and beautiful ambience. \nHis works are a testament to his dedication to exploring and exploiting the pictorial possibilities generated by the physicality of his painting process. Rivers creates sumptuous\, surrealistic\, fantastical scenes of otherworldly\, stellar landscapes with saturated washes of vibrant color that develop into lowering skyscapes\, clots\, and accretions of impasto that turn into mountain ranges\, scattered and scumbled paint fields that become the detritus of volcanic explosions\, and swirling billows of translucent medium that suggest protean clouds of gas. The contrast of light and dark elements presents a dichotomy that invites the viewer to explore the interplay between opposing forces\, evoking at once a sense of innocence and treachery\, harmony and dissonance\, serenity and turbulence\, order and chaos. \nHe carefully inserts small figures\, often astronauts and cherubs\, into his galactic turmoil to establish a sense of innocence and isolation\, struggle and survival. Indistinguishable at first glance\, the figures are subsumed in fiery\, elemental vortices of turbulent paint\, carried through time and space\, desperate voyagers in an alien world. They exist on the edge of the sublime\, in awe of the terrifying universe surrounding them. Rivers seems keen to emphasize human vulnerability and at the same time hail the pioneering spirit\, inviting the viewer on a fantastic voyage\, in anticipation of being lost and found in space.  \nThrough his alchemical and self-described “alternative” process\, Rivers transforms mundane material into visionary images. Satellite showcases Rivers’ mastery of the language of painterly abstraction to create pictures of notional and imaginary places and is a testament to Rivers’ artistry and passion for exploring the beauty and wonder of the cosmos\, the complexities and contradictions of the human experience\, and the infinite possibilities of the universe.

SUMMARY:Richard Harrison | Elemental
DESCRIPTION:Friedrichs Pontone is thrilled to present Elemental\, the first solo exhibition in New York of works by the acclaimed contemporary artist Richard Harrison\, on view from 13 April to 14 May 2023. \nBorn in Liverpool in 1954\, Harrison studied Medieval History at Cambridge University before receiving a BFA and MFA in Painting from Chelsea School of Art. The critic Brian Sewell was an early champion of Harrison’s work\, recognizing its committed\, insistent nature. He described the artist as ‘a visionary prophet’ and his paintings as ‘big\, bold\, beautiful\, and threatening.’ \nThe exhibition will feature a selection of Harrison’s recent works\, showcasing his signature style of bold colors\, dynamic compositions\, and intricate layers. Drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as the natural world\, the urban landscape\, and the history of abstract art\, Harrison’s paintings are a masterclass in color and form. With a career spanning over three decades\, Richard Harrison has established himself as one of the leading artists of his generation. His work combines a rigorous formal approach with a deep engagement with nature and the history of art\, resulting in a body of work that is both visually stunning and intellectually stimulating. \nHarrison’s paintings are known for their vibrant hues\, ranging from bold primaries to delicate pastels\, which create a sense of movement and energy on the canvas. His compositions are equally dynamic\, with sweeping arcs\, jagged lines\, and geometric shapes interlocking in a complex dance of form and space. These are Romantic paintings\, concerned with struggle\, the ‘sublime’ and intense emotion. They are rooted in the artist’s desire to experience more than the everyday and a frustration with the tedium of a highly mediated and disassociated world. He aligns himself with his historical heroes: Goya’s somber imaginings\, Turner’s evocations of elemental power and Bacon’s existential despair. He sees them as fellow outsiders enacting a Nietzschean contest for mastery of the self. We see him as the mounted figure carving a path through a sea of paint. \nHarrison’s works are rich in color and texture with generous lashings of paint\, which ebb and flow on the canvas reflecting turbulence and often violent upheaval. His paintings are awesome in scale; their content exaggerated by the vigorous and robust handling of voluminous layers of paint adeptly manipulated to create a dynamic expression of form and color which resonate all-over the canvas thus underpinning the powerful emotional and visionary themes ever present in the artist’s compositions. The artist strives for an intensely uncompromising and powerful effect\, which he describes as ‘no half measures’. Using the language of abstraction to capture the essence of the natural world\, his paintings evoke the play of light and shadow\, the movement of wind and water\, and the textures of rocks and trees. They are at once abstract and representational\, inviting the viewer to experience the landscape in a new way.
