SUMMARY:"Snapshots of the Mind" by Michael Abraham
DESCRIPTION:March 7 – 30\, 2024 \nArtist Michael Abraham‘s oil painting and sculpture exhibition\, Snapshots of the Mind\, features newer artworks and some distinctive Abraham classics\, showcasing a consciousness of human nature\, the richness of life and the passage of time. \nSince 1992\, Abraham’s oil paintings have garnered him a dedicated following. His unique perspective and ability to evoke emotion through his work have been recognized by critics and collectors alike. Abraham’s imagery spans the gamut between profound social commentary to the appreciation of what is most beautiful and meaningful. In Snapshots of the Mind\, the open-hearted descriptions that accompany each work welcome guests into Abraham’s reflective journey\, such as his piece\, Waterworks / Something Else Shines Through (With Lame Duck)\, a liquidy ‘Kabuki-meets-cartoon’ style of painting from 2008 featuring characters standing in a pool of tears. Additionally\, Abraham’s 2023 post-Schrekian piece titled Leap of Faith was initially inspired by the idea of people turning to bucket lists as a way of coming to terms with their mortality\, depicting an enthusiastic squirrel-suited jumper about to embark on a flight high above a most finely detailed vista. \nAbraham’s bronze sculpture titled Cluster Ball began taking shape just as the Covid pandemic took hold. It appears from afar as an indistinct asteroid like metallic rock\, but upon closer inspection reveals itself to be a finely detailed interlinking of expressive figures looking out into space. For the painting titled Thumbing\, Abraham writes: “In a deviation to an illustrative ‘Three Little Pigs meets Picasso’ style of painting\, I caricature the true nature of divisiveness that eventually pulls a variety of nose-thumbing eggheads into a black hole”. \n“I’ve heard that the meaning of life is to find meaning in life\,” says Abraham. “And I like art that encourages reflection… Art reflects life: serious\, funny\, absurd\, joyous\, paradoxical\, sensuous\, communal\, divisive… all things at once\, These are snapshots of the mind in time.” \nSnapshots of the Mind will be on display at Gallery 110 from March 7 – 30\, 2024. Gallery hours are Thursday – Saturday from 12pm – 5pm and by appointment.

SUMMARY:"Fragments of the Sea II" by David Haughton
DESCRIPTION:March 7 – 30\, 2024 \nArtist David Haughton presents Fragments of the Sea II\, an acrylic painting exhibition consisting of primarily new paintings of the Pacific Ocean during storm season\, and as a counter punctual accent\, also features much older watercolor pieces of the Greek Cycladean landscape that were exhibited in Athens in 2007 at Haughton’s first Fragments of the Sea exhibition. The work highlights views of storm-tossed waves from the beaches of Tofino and Nocturnes of ships in the Burrard Inlet\, all evoking light at crepuscule or before dawn. \nFragments of the Sea comes from a line in The Monogram\, Haughton’s favorite poem by Odysseus Elitis\, one of the three great modern Greek poets. Haughton’s first truly original artwork was a pen & ink drawing of houses by the Aegean Sea in 1975. Near 50 years later\, he responds just as avidly to the juxtaposition of ephemeral edifices\, land and the sea. \nFragments of the Sea II will be on display at Gallery 110 from March 7 – 30\, 2024. Gallery hours are Thursday – Saturday from 12pm – 5pm and by appointment.

SUMMARY:Present Perfect
DESCRIPTION:Artist Nathan Vass‘ chosen medium\, analogue color photography\, will be remembered as one of the shortest-lived art forms; it came of age in the ’70s\, the populist sibling of B&W (itself the awkward stepchild of painting) and part of a medium invented too late to be taken seriously. It died out in large part on August 30th\, 2018\, when the last large professional-grade\, public-access color darkroom in the US closed its doors. The timing is unfortunate: film\, though no longer the norm for image-making\, remains the premier avenue of approach for fine art photo work and is the fastest-growing trend in photography today. After two decades of experimentation with digital cameras\, there can be no arguing that film yields a better image. In so doing\, what else does it tell us? \nPhotography is a preservationist’s medium. We photographers seek to capture\, freeze\, save the past. We strive desperately to stop time\, and we always fail. Or do we? Film photography is the physicality of a moment. You are looking at paper coated with silver halide crystals which have been burned by photons at a precise moment in time\, causing them to change color. The light’s alteration of a print surface’s structural composition more closely resembles sculpture than digital photography\, which interprets reality as colored squares instead of reshaping– quite literally– the material residue of a split second. It is the closest we can come to freezing the physicality of a moment\, and somehow it feels appropriate that it’s achieved not with brushes or ink but something as ephemeral as light itself. Should we forever mourn life’s passing\, or shall we instead rejoice in its qualities\, and those of the things we have also lost? \nThe pieces in Present Perfect are handmade\, analogue prints from a discipline Vass trained in which no longer exists\, depicting spaces and people which will never quite be as you see them here. \nLet us nurture the skill we will need ever more as life progresses. Let us celebrate what was. The past need not be looked at solely through the lens of sorrow. We own our memories\, and are lucky to have them. “Melancholy is the happiness of being sad\,” Hugo wrote. Let us therefore revel in what we can no longer touch\, rejoice in what we once so easily knew. \nLife is too glorious not to celebrate.

SUMMARY:Artist and Artisan: Still Life Paintings
DESCRIPTION:The 15 oil paintings in artist Kathy Roseth‘s exhibition celebrate the beauty of domestic crafts – rugs\, weavings\, ceramic tiles and embroideries from many cultures. \nRoseth first became interested in domestic crafts in the early 1980s\, when she saw a show of Amish quilts at the Henry Art Gallery on the University of Washington campus. She was stunned by the austere power of the geometric shapes\, their pulsing colors\, and the exquisite craftsmanship “that made every square inch worth looking at”. She spent the next twenty years making traditional American quilts\, exploring how a simple geometric pattern establishes a framework through which fantastic color progressions and light effects are possible. Two of the paintings in the show feature her own quilts. \nRoseth’s interest in artisan works intensified in the 2010s when she traveled through Mexico. The first painting she completed for this exhibition was “Talavera Onions” (2021)\, featuring a blue bowl full of vegetables against a background of hand painted yellow and blue Talavera tiles. The tiles were made in Puebla\, Mexico\, in a Mexican craft tradition that dates to medieval Spain and its Islamic-influenced culture of the 10th-15th centuries. The painting is mostly about the vegetables\, as is its companion piece\, “Talavera Turnips.” Both are traditional still-life paintings featuring objects on a tabletop\, with the intent to represent an actual space\, or something close to it. The artisan tiles contribute as decorations. \nIn her subsequent paintings\, the compositions moved away from the tabletop and toward the creation of imaginary spaces that concentrate attention on the artisan objects themselves. “Mayan Shawl” (2023) features a densely embroidered shoulder wrap made in the Mayan town of Zinacatan in Chiapas\, Mexico. In the painting the shawl hangs in an entirely imaginary space\, with images of flowers and corn brocaded into the black background. The painting “Norwegian Hardanger Embroidery and Eggshells” also represents an imaginary space\, with the delicate cotton embroidery implausibly bearing down on hapless eggshells. \nMany of the items represented in these paintings are connected to Roseth’s past and her family’s history. She was born in Iran and grew up surrounded by Middle Eastern rugs. The painting “My Mother’s Sari” features the sari Roseth’s mother wore as a child in Nipani\, India\, the daughter of missionaries. The African textiles were acquired by her sister and a friend in their respective sojourns as Peace Corps volunteers in West Africa. The Norwegian Hardanger embroidery has hung on her bedroom wall for decades. She bought it in the 1990s at a fundraiser for the Lutheran-based housing nonprofit where she used to work. \nRoseth seeks to capture the presence and mystery of her subjects in a spirit of deep respect for their makers and the cultures that nurtured them. She knows from experience that the impulse to make a painting is the same as the impulse to make a quilt. Artists and artisans alike want to make something beautiful\, to make a home for themselves in a cold world.

SUMMARY:Broken crayons still color
DESCRIPTION:When artist Bonnie Hopper was a little girl one Christmas\, she received a box of 100 Crayola color crayons to share among the five youngest children. Bonnie was eight at the time and the oldest of the bunch and therefore the undisputed leader. A born artist\, she was incensed as she looked on and watched her two sisters and two brothers wear the tips of the crayons down to nubs or simply break them in half. This careless abuse of what Bonnie considered a precious gift had her running to Mama in tears as she complained that some of the best colors were ruined. To her surprise\, Mama just laughed- which made her cry even harder. \nAfter wiping her tears\, she bent down and held Bonnie’s face between her palms and said simply: “Don’t you know broken crayons still color?” \nAt the time she had no answer to the question that did little to ease her frustration. However\, much later it occurred to her how significant that question was and how it applies to so many things in life. Broken crayons -like people- are no less useful or colorful than whole crayons. We come in all races\, sexes\, shapes\, and sizes. We continue to enrich each other’s lives by providing glimpses of our culture and lifestyles through art that delight\, encourage\, and educate. \nBroken crayons still color is a series of paintings based on that memory. They remind us that our imagination has no limits and can take us anywhere we choose to go\, which lead to other questions such as\, what if popular fairytales depicted people of ethnic backgrounds\, and what that would look like. Then there is the reality of Black culture\, which consists of a large part of the day spent prepping in anticipation of sharing a great time with family and friends or a long Sunday morning worship service with little or no time constraints. These are all part of the Black experience Bonnie seeks to share through artistic expression. In Broken crayons still color\, Bonnie Hopper reimagines Alice in Wonderland\, Cinderella and other fairytales – then threw in some reality for good measure.

SUMMARY:Timeless Light
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Behrend invites us to a space beyond time in Timeless Light. His work connects to the divinity of nature and the dimensions of existence where universal consciousness is found. \nMatthew’s patinas are meditative works of otherworldly forms and landscapes created with electric fields under water. His work is about the joy of creating with nature\, experiencing dimensions beyond the five senses. The Electric Patina is a unique medium he created with influence from darkroom photography\, semiconductor lithography\, and the electrochemistry of neural prosthetics. Electric fields are invisible to the eye\, but predictable\, fluid\, and responsive to the 3D world. A 3D sculpture of electric fields is composed in front of copper or brass to form the patina. The patinas are imprints of an ephemeral conversation of the artist with natural forces. \nMatthew’s work is questioning perception. It deals with turning around beliefs of our existence in time and space and offers an experience of curiosity through forms defying concepts of separateness. Gradients replace object edges and where edges are placed in the work they reference a lack of edges. Contours of form are signed in the mathematics of electrophysics. His process of developing images includes the physics that life unfolds and creates with.

SUMMARY:Photography Explored (Experimental and Alternative)
DESCRIPTION:Working with film and experimenting with alternative processes and techniques\, artist Marcus Lelle experiences uncertainty routinely. Even considering the planning that goes into every image\, the final results can never be known ahead of time. By choosing to exchange as many of the chemicals that are involved in the process for more environmentally focused materials\, such as beer\, wine and coffee\, Marcus begins to remove the known aspects of his chosen medium. By deciding to print three dimensional portraits he has brought the image out of the studio and directly into the viewer’s space. In pairing the three dimensional works with their two dimensional counterparts\, he puts a focus on not only the subject but the medium and process as well. \nIn Photography Explored (Experimental and Alternative)\, Marcus explores the boundaries of the photographic medium\, and creates a space where viewer and artist alike can find themselves sharing in the sense of discovery and challenging their own perceptions. Marcus often chooses to include the edges of the work to provide a glimpse of the process\, allowing the viewer to share in the emotions that he experienced as he created the work. This body of work focuses on human emotion as it is conveyed by the subject\, and embodies the ideals of experimentation\, creativity and passion.

SUMMARY:Re: Seeing
DESCRIPTION:March 2 – April 1\, 2023 \nRe: Seeing approaches how we see others and the world around us. Curated by Gallery 110 Director Shayley Timm and featuring all local Seattle artists\, each piece expresses a subtle outcry to either see the artist as who they are or to see the alternate world they’ve provided. \nThe work in Re: Seeing asks viewers simply\, what about this. Walking through each existence invites us to not only acknowledge any implicit bias we carry\, but to also challenge assumptions upon walking in the door. Deeply personal\, each artist offers witnesses a chance to see their whole person as who they really are or a landscape of what they envision. The work is created for you just as much as it is for them. \nFeaturing all Seattle artists\, Re: Seeing helps realize alternate structures and additionally gives voice and visibility to the artist and their goal. Pieces that imagine an equal approach or different structures sit proudly next to paintings and photographs that invite presence in the eyes that see them as who they are. \nThe show provides a vulnerable opportunity to separate our minds from what we see and calm our everyday social identities. Timm’s motivation on truly seeing and imagining alternate existences comes from her passion for storytelling and equity as well as a through line of what if\, present in many of the artists she’s had the privilege to work with. She also aims to offer a unique connection between patrons and the artist\, one that is often blurry\, nonexistent\, or transactional. Each artist presents unfiltered self portraits\, landscapes\, social commentary\, and more. Come meet them and their vision. \nParticipating artists: \nBaso Fibonacci\nDenise Emerson\nBonnie Hopper\nLi Turner\nMarie Okuma Johnston\nAngshuman Sarkar\nDorothy Anderson Wasserman\nNahom Ghirmay\nGreg Amanti \nRe: Seeing will be on display at Gallery 110 from March 2 – April 1\, 2023. Gallery hours are Thursday – Saturday from 12pm – 5pm and by appointment. Please join us for the First Thursday Art Walk on March 2nd from 4-8pm.

SUMMARY:Sovereignty & Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Gallery 110’s annual juried exhibition showcases work by emerging and established artists\, chosen from hundreds of applications by this year’s juror: Jaimie Isaac. \nJaimie Isaac is a curator and interdisciplinary artist based in Canada. In 2021\, she was appointed Chief Curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria\, having previously served for several years as the Indigenous and Contemporary Arts curator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. She is a member of the Sagkeeng First Nation in Treaty 1 Territory\, and of mixed European ancestry. \nThe 13th Annual International Juried Exhibition will be on display at Gallery 110 from February 2 – 25\, 2023. The juror will award first\, second and third place prizes of $1000\, $500 and $300. There will also be a People’s Choice Award of $200\, voted on by visitors to the gallery’s First Thursday opening (2/2/23). The gallery is open to the public from 12PM to 5PM on Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays and by appointment. Visit us during the Pioneer Square First Thursday Art Walk on February 2nd from 4-8PM. \n\nAWARD ANNOUNCEMENTS\nThe 13th Annual International Juried Exhibition‘s reception and juror’s award announcements will be February 3\, 2023\, from 4-5:30pm. Invitations to the reception can be requested from director@gallery110.com \nSoon after the reception a link to a video of the 2023 award announcements will be posted on Gallery 110’s website as a link to Facebook and Instagram. \n\nJUROR’S STATEMENT\nThe 13th Annual International Juried Exhibition explores notions of sovereignty and liberation in political\, social\, and cultural contexts. A wide range of possibilities are broadly encountered and examined. The artists grapple with and respond to both histories and the present moment with individual perceptions of the world\, seeking to define the spirit of the times. Artistic impulses form expansive and articulated reflections on the health crisis\, environmental injustices\, eco-anxiety\, gender\, reproductive and racial oppression\, and systemic violence and disenfranchisement. They honor the courage of enduring resistance and liberation movements\, migrations\, and activism. \nCollectively and individually\, the artwork chosen explores relationships between past and present-day social\, political\, environmental\, and cultural complexities that both unite and divide nations. The focus on liberty and sovereignty assisted the decision to gather together multiple voices\, perspectives\, disciplines\, contrasting and diverse responses – deriving from the agency of the artists submissions. \nMy gratitude and acknowledgment to hold these conversations on the traditional land of the Coast Salish people – specifically the ancestral land of the Duwamish\, Suquamish\, Stillaguamish\, and Muckleshoot People past and present.\n— Jaimie Isaac\, Chief Curator Art Gallery of Greater Victoria

SUMMARY:Negative Capability: The Artist As Healer
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Seattle artist Saundra Fleming and featuring South Carolina artist Cliffton Peacock\, Aleksandar Dordjevic (Serbia) and Andrea Harborth (Germany)\, and NW artists Liz Kennedy\, Alexis Ortiz\, Kate Harkins\, Jeffrey Heiman\, George Brandt\, Carol Adelman Kennedy\, Ingrid Sojit\, Lynette Charters\, Courtney Hudak\, Nahom Ghirmay and K. Taka\, the show explores the diverse range of postmodern portraiture. \nThe portraits in Negative Capability demonstrate the particular power artists have to challenge our perceptions\, represent psychological challenges\, and pursue their interpretation of beauty. \nThe poet John Keats coined the term negative capability to describe the capacity of the greatest writers to pursue a vision of artistic beauty even when it leads them into intellectual confusion and uncertainty. \nArtists who have the courage to endure psychological stress and confusion in their process\, don’t stop the development of their work because it’s too destabilizing or painful. The finished works offer the viewers a healing experience. Portraits truly “see” their subjects beyond the surface. They are healers of psychological crises\, reaching for a self-healing psyche and a higher state of consciousness. \nFleming’s focus on negative capability comes from her view of the common thread within the shaman and the artist. Working through destabilizing darkness is similar to a shaman’s state of mind when going into a trance in order to heal or predict for their community. This is akin to the visionary searching of poets\, mystics\, or artists who heal or predict for their community. \nFrom the inspiration she has found through portraits\, Fleming’s existential reality is lifted up. She mentions\, “I almost feel as if I am being held”. \nGallery 110 will be hosting a panel discussion featuring Carol Adelman Kennedy\, Liz Kennedy\, Alexis Ortiz\, Jeffrey Heiman and Paul E. Nelson (moderator) to discuss the concept of negative capability and the artistic process on January 8\, 2023 from 1-3pm.

SUMMARY:Free from Ill Will
DESCRIPTION:Comprised entirely of glazed stoneware\, artist Kevin Marshall‘s exhibition Free from Ill Will reminds us that we are here for such a short time. \nClay becomes rock\, and rock lasts as close to forever as anything humans have made. Kevin’s work is a reminder of our brief existences when compared to the eternity of stoneware. Each piece has a blessing written on it (inscribed or implied) to be used for this fleeting time. Marshall’s functional fine art pottery is suitable for the table and has fascinating textures to engage a sense of touch. Each endearingly gnarled and tangled piece is decorated in his unique and distinctive style. ‘Ill will’ is one of the veils to awakening. May we all be free from ill will.

SUMMARY:Intermezzo
DESCRIPTION:ctober 6 – 29\, 2022 A site-specific installation that combines the natural world with elements of a built environment\, artist Greg Amanti‘s exhibition Intermezzo aims to replicate a dreamlike aesthetic where two worlds can co-exist. Allowing the process to dictate the outcome\, Amanti replicates trees\, the ground\, rocks\, and the human form; he then copies them using mirrors\, neon and painted glass and places the result back into the composition. “Similar to creating a set design for a play\, except the stage is a composition of nature”.

DESCRIPTION:Artist Dorothy Anderson Wasserman‘s relief sculpture suite\, “The Carnival of the Animals\,” is inspired by Camille Saint-Saens’ 1886 musical composition of the same name. Written when Saint-Saens was on a vacation in Vienna\, the piece shows a playful\, light-spirited side to this composer who was considered one of the most important figures in French 19th century culture. As a humorous musical suite in fourteen movements\, Wasserman’s work continues this playful sensibility\, portraying the characters with sophisticated whimsy and an old fashioned aesthetic. \nEach relief sculpture has “dance performers” who are stylistically tied to a famous choreographer. For instance\, Wasserman’s piece Hens and Roosters took its inspiration from The Twyla Tharp Dance Company\, which the artist studied with for a short period in 1978. As a dancer and choreographer herself\, Wasserman found Tharp influential in her own understanding of movement back in the 1980s. This kind of connection is mirrored throughout the work. \nIn essence\, The Carnival of the Animals is a pairing of choreographer’s styles with the music of Saint-Saens via sculptural “performers” dressed in animal costumes.

SUMMARY:Floatsom/Floatilla
DESCRIPTION:Artist Sally Ketcham presents her mixed media show comprised of paintings\, drawings\, photography and found objects/assemblage. Her work reflects both childhood and recent pandemic time spent near\, in and on the waters and beaches of Kitsap County. This exhibition references the stresses (big and small) in the ecosystem. \nThe surface of the water – often stunningly calm\, blue and clear contrasts with species decimation underneath\, with the ominous reminders of the militarization of the area seas\, and the deafening noise of vessel traffic under the surface. At the same time rebirth and resiliency are everywhere\, less\, but still there. While Sally Ketcham’s images may not explicitly illustrate or address any of this\, the form of the show and to some extent the content references these contradictions along with the struggle\, loss and hope for sea life and their homes.

SUMMARY:Material Meditations
DESCRIPTION:Artist Greg Pierce has always held a fascination with the transformation of materials in different states of decay and breakdown. “Material Meditations” is an aesthetic exploration of structural integrity affected by entropic forces in nature. \nWhen fortunate\, one stumbles across an object in the environment that has a particular aesthetic resonance. Erosional elements such as water\, insects\, wind\, and ice alter an object’s structural integrity and softens features in a manner that captivates imagination. In a similar fashion\, the processes Pierce uses to create his sculpture also displays similar entropic features of fluidity and erosion that echo nature. \nIn Material Meditations\, Pierce has chosen small objects of eroded wood\, bone\, metal\, and stone with just such qualities. Some objects are totemic\, while others engage in dialogue with the abstracted landscape structures that Pierce often constructs by fusing local rock materials with clay and recycled glass. In each piece there’s a palpable tension and energy that emanates from the dialectic between the embedded found object and the constructed fused sculptural landscape. Additionally\, there will be a selection of artwork from one of his previous exhibitions that will act as an evolution to his most recent pieces.

SUMMARY:Notes from my backyard
DESCRIPTION:Sequestered by COVID-19\, A-M Petersons found her backyard a refuge for discovery and contemplation – inspiring subtle\, beautiful evocations of lichen “ghosts”.  \nA-M Petersons has a relationship with her garden\, with the last two years cementing their bond. When home was a refuge\, fortress\, and jail\, the garden stepped up and led her to a new place – a place that already existed with a view she had previously ignored. For A-M\, the beams of the pergola became meditation mantras. She was led to look up\, consider the branches of the apple tree\, and examine the old retaining wall that holds the roots of a grapevine. Each examined surface offered the usual splotches and shadows of garden “ghosts”. During the days spent isolated in the garden\, scanning the beams of the pergola\, the walls\, the concrete wall\, A-M was drawn into the gray. The ghosts she saw breathed life. \nThis exhibition is a simple salute and exploration of the lichen “ghosts” that live vibrantly in her garden.

SUMMARY:I Dream in Color
DESCRIPTION:Artist Kurt Erickson’s dynamic\, colorful abstractions explore the bursts of radiance that come from the in-between spaces of our dreams. While awake\, colors are used to represent everything from mourning and love to excitement or rage. When noticing a color while dreaming\, the interpretation of that dream could be aided by what colors shine through. \nWhile working in his studio\, Kurt reverts back to a childlike creative headspace\, letting intuition take hold. His subconscious mind moves to the in-between spaces and glimpses light and darkness. This body of work\, like most of his work\, is accessible to anyone and is aimed at the child inside all of us. Kurt’s paintings encourage minds to wander\, referred to as dreams in the sense that they are open to interpretation. He hopes to make connections with each viewer and start a unique conversation between painting and audience.

SUMMARY:The Other Washington State
DESCRIPTION:Spotlighting industrial landscapes of eastern Washington\, artist Angshuman Sarkar‘s exhibition The Other Washington State is an exploration and tribute of the American landscape that is often less seen and infrequently talked about. \nWashington state is divided by the mountains into two parts\, splitting the economy\, occupations\, and lifestyles with it. The division is stark and is often excluded from the conversations about the state. Eastern Washington\, being away from the economic hubs and ports of the West side has developed differently. Much of the economics of this part relies on the Columbia river and the Grand Coulee Dam. In the industrial and agrarian landscapes of eastern Washington\, we can see many of the building blocks of the country – the ecosystem of human endeavor\, engineering ingenuity\, hard work and infrastructure. This series explores the not so often seen landscapes of the region.

SUMMARY:Reconstructed
DESCRIPTION:July 7 – 30\, 2022 \nIn her body of work titled Reconstructed\, artist Geralyn Inokuchi explores painted paper collage in creating her non-objective abstracts – each being a metaphor for life events and her personal growth over recent years. The work can be seen as a journey indicating a progression where resilience and healing are apparent. This personal landscape may show all of the imperfections\, but it is also one which reflects something richer with more depth. In essence: reconstructed. \nReconstructed will be on display at Gallery 110 from July 7 – 30. SUMMARY:Nocturnes IV: Return to Elliott Bay
DESCRIPTION:May 5 – 28\, 2022 \nIn Nocturnes IV: Return to Elliott Bay British Columbia artist David A. Haughton presents twenty evocative paintings of the Seattle harbor that capture twilight and dawn with wide passages of color and ambiguous suggestions of form. Cranes on the horizon tilt like enormous religious objects\, transcending realism. Ships\, coddled by the tides\, rotate slowly\, their lights reflecting across the water like mysterious\, incandescent monasteries. \n“Nocturnes IV: Return to Elliott Bay” will be on display at Gallery 110 from May 5 – 28. The gallery is open to the public from 12PM to 5PM on Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays and by appointment (director@gallery110.com). SUMMARY:Willamette Valley Exhibition – Barking Dog Wines
DESCRIPTION:May 5 – 28\, 2022 \nThis May\, in addition to Nocturnes IV: Return to Elliott Bay in the East Gallery\, artist David Haughton will display his four Willamette Valley paintings in Gallery 110’s smaller North Gallery. \nEmory & Mary Fry\, old friends of Haughton\, planted their vineyards eight years ago high on the northern slopes of the Willamette Valley. They took chances\, planting grape varieties that have been proven very successful elsewhere but are less known in the Pacific Northwest. This April 2022\, they are bottling the first vintages from their Barking Dog Winery. \nEach year their wine labels will feature works by one of their artist friends. Haughton’s paintings – views of their vineyards and the Willamette Valley to the east\, south and west – will be featured this inaugural year. \n \nWin/win \nBarking Dog Winery will donate a portion of the proceeds of each bottle to featured charities & non-profits – this year that will include support for the Gallery 110 Emerging Artist Program. \nWe will be serving Barking Dog rosé at the exhibition reception May 6\, 2022 from 4 – 5:30pm (it has been reported as superb). Email our Director\, Shayley Timm if you would like to attend the reception on May 6th. You will be sent an invitation via return email. \nAdditionally\, Haughton has pledged to donate all proceeds from the sale of any of the four Willamette Valley paintings to the Gallery 110 Emerging Artist Program. Please help support our Emerging Artist Program by giving one of these painting a nice new home or assist us by buying a case of this most-excellent wine.
