SUMMARY:West Coast Artists
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Henoch is pleased to present West Coast Artists\, an exhibition featuring eight painters who work in varied locations from Oregon to Southern California. Their subject matter ranges from landscapes and seascapes to still life and figurative scenes. An opening reception for the artists will be held Thursday\, October 17th from 6-8 PM.  The event is free and open to the public. \nCarin Gerard paints lavish flowers which mirror the beauty of nature yet burst forth on the canvas into larger-than-life images. While her methods are reflective of the Old Masters\, her aesthetic is contemporary. \nWorking in mixed-media and resin\, Susan Goldsmith fashions up-close studies of subjects such as water lilies and cherry blossoms. She conceives shimmering surfaces that change depending on the light\, mirroring the way colors change in nature at different times of day or in response to the wind. \nThe effects of light are also important to Sunghee Jang\, in her case how it illuminates and reflects on surfaces. Some of her pieces highlight recognizable Californian scenery\, like her painting Bay Bridge\, which explores the play of daylight across the water’s surface\, evoking both the immediacy of the moment and the meditative stillness found in rippling water. \nAfter more than a decade spent refining his technical mastery in Hollywood’s film industry\, Drew Klausner has turned his focus toward the layered narratives of his own photography. His most recent series are carefully constructed flip-lenticular prints\, which offer an interactive view of the vintage photographs he finds\, recovers\, and manipulates. \nElizabeth McGhee gives new life to vintage items in her still lifes. She draws from pop culture\, literary references\, and puns when composing her classically styled paintings\, turning to humor to address serious or controversial subjects. Her charming paintings of toys and other Americana items inspire deeper analysis. \nFundamentally inspired by his surroundings\, Gary Ruddell does paintings that capture the nostalgia of childhood and familial life\, often through depicting his loved ones. Taking mundane and routine scenes\, like children playing together in the California surf\, Ruddell paints misty figures cast in a dreamlike quality. \nEric Wert is inspired by the compositions of Dutch still lifes\, featuring elaborate floral arrangements and dewy fruits and vegetables. He reinterprets the canon with his punchy use of color and pattern while remaining true to classical realism. \nEric Zener has been engaged in a quest to observe and understand the inner experience of humans\, using water as a primary metaphor. Many of his paintings depict figures situated in water\, although in others he shifts focus to explore the mysteries of nature devoid of human presence. Here he offers a reverence for California’s untamed forests and vast coastlines. \nGallery Henoch\, 555 West 25th St. (between 10th and 11th Ave). Subway: C or E to 23rd St. Hours: Tuesday – Saturday\, 10:30 am – 6:00 pm or by appointment. Free and open to the public. Contact the gallery at 1.917.305.0003 or info@galleryhenoch.com for additional information.

SUMMARY:Robert C. Jackson: That's Unreal
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Henoch is pleased to announce That’s Unreal\, Robert C. Jackson’s seventh solo show with the gallery. Jackson continues to bemuse and astonish with his humorous still life paintings that offer commentary on human experiences\, aspirations\, and vices. An opening reception will be held Thursday\, November 9th from 6 to 8 PM. \nRobert C. Jackson’s still lifes are anything but “still.” By offering tight compositions brimming with potential movement and elements of implausibility\, he simultaneously references the absurd\, the comical\, and the pertinent. Aiming to bend reality\, Jackson hooks his audiences with scenes that have them questioning what they saw. This comes under the form of his habitual balloon dogs engaging in humanlike debauchery\, but also in elements of trompe-l’oeil\, where the notion of play holds significance. In “Shadow” and “Fertile Soil” Jackson challenges the viewer as he recreates scenes from his studio life that prompt contemplation as he blurs the lines between reality and illusion. \nIn this new series of paintings Jackson’s signature characters return to play a central role in the artist’s storytelling technique. These props\, most notably balloon dogs\, vintage figurines\, and soda crates\, are used to play out anthropomorphized dramas\, occasionally delving into taboo subjects. Through a humorist approach\, Jackson reconciles challenging themes with that of pleasure\, seeing it as the antidote to the realities of everyday life. Works like “Spaghetti” and “Don’t Even Think About It” evoke a strong narrative\, but Jackson cleverly avoids spoonfeeding all the necessary details\, echoing his belief that “art is dialog.” By using allegory and metaphor to tell his tales\, Jackson plays the role of a stage director: setting the scene into motion but letting viewers decipher and interpret for themselves. \nJackson’s national exposure includes exhibitions at the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art\, the Butler Art Institute\, the Greenville Museum\, the Brandywine River Museum of Art\, the New Britain Museum of American Art\, the Delaware Art Museum\, the Evansville Museum of Art\, the Philbrook Museum\, the South Dakota Museum of Art\, the Islip Art Museum\, and the Hunter Museum. He lives and works in Kennett Square\, PA.

SUMMARY:John Evans: 'BREATHE' Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Henoch presents BREATHE\, twelve paintings produced over the last two years by artist John Evans. As the title for the exhibition suggests\, these works evoke the meditative quality of the botanic gardens which are their subject. The show will run from March 19th through April 11th\, 2020. The artist will be present at an opening reception on March 19th from 6-8pm. The event is free and open to the public. \n“It’s evident when looking at John Evans’ work that he is a painter completely enveloped in the process of painting. Waterlilies\, a common visual trope in this body of work\, float across the painted surfaces. At times they resemble hearts\, at other moments they become simple ellipses\, then still forms\, only existing due to the surrounding paint that holds them in place. For an artist such as John Evans\, the subject is less important than the act itself. He has used his artistic prowess to consistently delve into the world of painting\, never tiring of the possibilities that can emerge from the unknown or from shifts in spatial planes. In each instance\, the landscape is malleable\, a vehicle for a painting —a way to recreate a world that might never be lived in. \nWhat initially may seem to be moments of representation can also be construed as fabrications of memory or imagination. His landscapes\, while inspired by veritable places\, reflect dimensions of life that can only exist within the realm of painting. While the wonderment of where this place is might emerge\, it will be less about where\, than just admiring a space where colors sail and the ground is alive with marks. In that it is like a fish in a pond\, lingering below the surface.” — Katy Diamond Hamer \nJohn Evans received his MFA from Boston University under the tutelage of James Weeks\, David Aronson\, and Philip Guston. His first solo show with Gallery Henoch was in 1984. Works by John Evans are held in the permanent collections of several distinguished institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston\, MA\, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington\, DC\, the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge\, MA\, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln\, MA\, and the Houston Museum of Fine Art\, TX\, among others.
