SUMMARY:Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt\, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt\, From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation is the first major retrospective exhibition tracing the artist’s career in print 1996-present alongside the artist’s monumental sculpture and textile works. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated exhibition catalogue. \n\n\nWe gave thanks for the story\, for all parts of the story\nbecause it was by the light of those challenges we knew\nourselves—Joy Harjo (Muscogee / Creek)\, National Poet Laureate \nMultimedia artist Marie Watt is a storyteller. As a member of the Seneca Nation (one of six that comprise the Haudenosaunee Confederacy) with German-Scots ancestry\, her stories draw from Native and non-Native traditions: Greco-Roman myth\, pop music and Pop art\, Indigenous oral narratives\, Star Wars and Star Trek. \nWatt reminds us of the stories told by her Seneca ancestors: how the world came to be\, what we have to learn from animals\, our ethical obligations to the planet\, as well as to past and future generations. She tells stories about humble\, everyday materials and objects—blankets\, quilts\, corn husks\, letters\, ladders\, and dreamcatchers—that carry intimate meanings and memories. \nOver the course of her career\, Watt has told these stories through prints. The collaborative printmaking process is consistent with Watt’s desire to build communities through art and storytelling. The stories the prints tell are personal\, cultural\, and universal\, dealing with elemental themes of shelter\, dreams\, the earth and sky\, and the cosmos. \nAs a Klamath elder once told her: “My story changes when I know your story.” \nThis retrospective exhibition traces Marie Watt’s career in print from 1996-present. For the first time\, Watt’s early work from her MFA program at Yale\, and her collaborations with master printers at Crows Shadow Institute\, Sitka Center for Art and Ecology\, Tamarind Institute\, and more recently Mullowney Printing Company are exhibited alongside the artists monumental scale textiles and sculpture. This exhibition also explores Watt’s evolving practice of convening sewing and printing circles with family\, friends and community members. The exhibition was curated in partnership with the University of San Diego by Dr. John Murphy\, Philip and Lynn Straus Curator of Prints and Drawings at The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center\, Vassar College. \nMarie Watt (b. 1967) holds an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University; she also has degrees from Willamette University and the Institute of American Indian Arts; and in 2016 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from Willamette University. She has attended residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Vermont Studio Center; and has received fellowships from Anonymous Was a Woman\, the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, the Harpo Foundation\, The Ford Family Foundation\, and the Native Arts and Culture Foundation\, among others. \nWatt’s work in important museum collections across the United States. Selected collections include the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Seattle Art Museum\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery\, Yale University Art Gallery\, the Crystal Bridges Museum\, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian and Renwick Gallery\, the Tacoma Art Museum\, the Denver Art Museum\, and the Portland Art Museum. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by an exhibition catalogue that includes an artist interview with Derrick Cartwright\, Director of University Galleries\, University of San Diego and essays by Dr. Jolene Rickard\, Associate Professor Art History at Cornell University\, and the exhibition curator\, Dr. John Murphy\, Philip and Lynn Straus Curator of Prints and Drawings at The Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center\, Vassar College.

SUMMARY:unfinished: New Prints 2022/Winter
DESCRIPTION:On view in-person and online January 20–March 26\, 2022\nClosing Reception: Thursday\, March 24\nVisit www.ipcny.org/unfinished \nInternational Print Center New York (IPCNY) is pleased to announce unfinished: New Prints 2022/Winter juried by Queer.Archive.Work (QAW). For this presentation of IPCNY’s open call exhibition program\, the theme “unfinished” was conceived of by QAW and announced alongside the open call\, soliciting works that stepped away from traditions of polish and perfection and instead expressed incompleteness\, illegibility\, risk\, and queerness\, among other themes. The resulting exhibition presents 49 works by 36 artists from the US and abroad.  \n“Within the loose theme of unfinished\, we push up against capitalism’s relentless drive towards market-based success by making way for other kinds of stories\,” said Queer.Archive.Work founder Paul Soulellis. “unfinished includes actual works-in-progress\, abandoned work\, failed work\, and work that is simply unfinished due to the myriad aspects and conditions artists experience while living and working during crisis—the radical turbulence of racial injustice\, police brutality\, class inequity\, global pandemic\, and climate emergency.”  \nunfinished is the latest presentation of IPCNY’s long-standing New Prints Program\, a biannual open call that supports artists from a wide range of backgrounds and reflects print-based artistic production of the last twelve months. QAW’s selection includes a variety of material and conceptual uses of print\, ranging from works made with traditional techniques such as intaglio and lithography\, to interdisciplinary sculptural works and installations\, to risograph zines. Together\, they explore the possibilities of what QAW calls “the non-linear\, uncertain space of the unfinished” and demonstrate a collective rethinking of labor\, time\, marketability\, and artistic success.  \nIn conjunction with the exhibition\, IPCNY will host public programming that includes a guided\, in-person walkthrough\, two online moderated artist conversations\, and an online discussion with QAW. Online talks are presented on Zoom with captioning. All programs are free and open to the public\, and registration is required. Check ipcny.org/public-programs for more information.  \n  \nARTISTS\ns alvarez\, Maggy Aston\, C. QAW was incorporated in the State of Rhode Island on March 2\, 2020 to support artists and writers with free\, open access to space and resources for experimental publishing\, with a special focus on queer practices. QAW includes a non-circulating library of books\, zines\, tools\, objects\, and downloadable files\, a risograph printer\, shared studio space (with Binch Press)\, and digital meeting spaces. Programming includes studio residencies\, open studios\, workshops\, publishing\, and online queer hangouts. QAW strives to be accountable\, to center marginalized voices through intersectional work\, and to cultivate anti-racist\, safe platforms for independent\, queer publishing.

SUMMARY:Present Tense: New Prints\, 2000–2005
DESCRIPTION:Present Tense: New Prints\, 2000–2005 is an exhibition that celebrates the institution’s 20th anniversary by revisiting works shown at IPCNY in the first five years of its founding New Prints program. From early prints by Julie Mehretu and Beatriz Milhazes to experiments in materiality by Roxy Paine and Melvin Edwards; from the socio-political gestures of Dread Scott and A.J. Bocchino to the technical mastery of Carol Wax and Lothar Osterburg\, Present Tense contend with identity\, migration\, materiality\, and abstraction as they show how artists navigated the terrain of the early aughts.

SUMMARY:Lonely Hearts: New Prints 2021/Summer
DESCRIPTION:On View June 10–September 18\nGallery Hours: Wednesday–Saturday 11 am –6 pm\nOnline exhibition: http://www.ipcny.org/lonely-hearts \nInternational Print Center New York (IPCNY) presents Lonely Hearts: New Prints 2021/Summer\, an exhibition of 42 new artworks selected by Christiane Baumgartner. “My selection is my very personal statement about the time we are living in\,” Baumgartner commented\, noting the relative scarcity of human presence and sense of desolation that emerged in her selection of works\, all of which were made since the COVID-19 pandemic began. “There is work showing empty streets or empty billboards\, for instance—but there is also abstract or non-figurative work that contains a certain concentration or contemplation.”  \nThis in-person and online exhibition brings together works by 36 artists across the country and internationally. It is the latest presentation of IPCNY’s long-standing New Prints Program\, a biannual open call that supports artists from a wide range of backgrounds and reflects print-based artistic production of the last twelve months. Baumgartner’s selection includes a wide variety of classic printmaking techniques such as woodcut\, drypoint\, and mezzotint\, as well as mixed-media works and print-based videos\, reflecting her interest in works that present traditional methods in a contemporary context. \nIPCNY’s New Prints Program is a platform for artists from a wide range of backgrounds working in the medium of print. The biannual open call exhibitions feature work created in the preceding twelve months. Juried by stakeholders in the field\, the exhibitions offer snapshots of what artists are contending with in the moment\, lending a sense of immediacy to each presentation. The New Prints Artist Development Program supports exhibiting artists during each cycle\, offering additional career advancement opportunities.

SUMMARY:New Prints In Focus: Mary Gordon McFall and Golbanou Moghaddas
DESCRIPTION:On View June 10–September 18\nGallery Hours: Wednesday–Saturday 11 am–6 pm\nOnline exhibition: https://www.ipcny.org/infocus-21s \nNew Prints In Focus is a new initiative at IPCNY designed to highlight the ongoing work of our New Prints Artist Development Awardees. This third presentation of New Prints In Focus highlights work by the two Artists In Residence selected from Give Me Space: New Prints 2020/Summer— Mary Gordon McFall and Golbanou Moghaddas. Each artist completed a “Residency in Place” during the summer of 2020\, working remotely in their home studios with support and funding provided by IPCNY. \nGordon McFall’s Playground Series uses layered monotypes and photo-lithography to explore the abstracted shapes of play structures and the ways in which the nostalgia of play can “anchor us to feelings of home and wellbeing even in the midst of chaos.” Moghaddas’s intimately-scaled etchings are inspired by Iranian poetry and bring characters and themes from those poems into her own life and surroundings.

Revis is a New York-based artist whose series REVISionary Prints explores her experience growing up in the Black community and celebrates leaders throughout African-American history. The talk will be moderated by Yulia Topchiy of Assembly Room\, co-curator of Living in America. \nThis is the third in a series of four conversations held in conjunction with Living in America.  \nThis Zoom webinar is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Living in America: An Exhibition in Four Acts
DESCRIPTION:In-Person at IPCNY September 30—December 19\, 2020\nMake a reservation at www.ipcny.org/visit\nOnline Exhibition launches September 29\nOpening Online Public Program September 29\, 7–8pm ET \nInternational Print Center New York announces Living in America: An Exhibition in Four Acts\, an online and in-person exhibition curated by Assembly Room that will unfold over the course of the fall season. Organized into four thematic “acts”—Outrage\, Love\, Hope\, and Care—Living in America explores the transformative power of art in times of crises.  \nFeaturing artists Mildred Beltré\, Vanessa German\, Mark Thomas Gibson\, Elektra KB\, Yashua Klos\, Narsiso Martinez\, Azikiwe Mohammed\, Nontsikelelo Mutiti\, Africanus Okokon\, Karen J. Revis\, Swoon\, William Villalongo\, and Dáreece J. Walker. Living in America presents a wide range of practices and spotlights the relevance and adaptability of print formats during political upheaval and resistance. Works include conventional printmaking\, mixed media incorporating found printed matter\, and those informed by reproduction and dissemination. New work is shown here for the first time by Elektra KB\, Yashua Klos\, Azikiwe Mohammed\, and Africanus Okokon\, as well as a site-specific stencil installation by Nontsikelelo Mutiti.  \n“These artists bear witness\, through their work\, to transformation—cultural\, material\, and aesthetic—and actively engage each other and their local communities as collaborators and subjects\,” says Assembly Room. “As the public struggles to renew America\, artists are paving the way and showing us how to channel our outrage\, inspire love\, live in hope\, and act with care.” \nAct I: Outrage presents artists channeling rage\, pain\, and despair into their work; Act II: Love explores love as a radical approach to building a more inclusive society; Act III: Hope illuminates forgotten histories and imagines new futures; and Act IV: Care considers artistic practices that center care as acts of self-preservation and political action. In IPCNY’s Chelsea exhibition space\, Acts I and II will open to the public on September 30. After a brief “Intermission\,” the gallery will open a new installation comprising Acts III and IV on November 11.
