SUMMARY:Katie Paterson: There is another sky
DESCRIPTION:Katie Paterson is renowned for her multi-disciplinary\, conceptually-driven artwork that explores themes of nature\, ecology\, geology\, and deep time. Through collaborations with scientists and researchers worldwide\, her ambitious projects delve into humanity’s place on Earth within the vast framework of geological time and transformation. Employing advanced technologies and specialized knowledge\, Paterson creates intimate\, poetic\, and thought-provoking works that challenge our perceptions of the world. Blending a Romantic sensibility with a rigorous\, research-based approach and minimalist aesthetics\, her art bridges the gap between the viewer and the farthest reaches of time. \nPaterson frequently works serially\, starting with a single\, seemingly impossible Idea—represented in this exhibition and throughout her body of work as short\, haiku-like sentences crafted in sterling silver. These sentences pose questions about deep time and the boundaries between reality and imagination. The works\, which may or may not materialize\, take form in the minds of those who engage with them\, becoming an expression of the idea itself. Often\, these initial concepts expand into a range of interlinked inquiries\, both material and philosophical. \nThis exhibition brings together a body of new interconnected works that mark a significant expansion of\nPaterson’s studio practice. The artist has created paintings\, sculptures\, and works on paper with materials that\nembody the physicality of our world and its origins. Delicately marbled watercolors are made with water drawn\nfrom ancient ice cores. Minimalist geometric forms are painted with pigment ground from fossilized forms of the of the first life on this planet. Glass is fired with sands gathered from all the deserts on Earth. Black lacquer is infused with the ashes from over 10\,000 unique species of trees. An hourglass is filled with stardust. An exquisitely hand-stitched embroidery brings extinct flowers back to life. Incense infuses the galleries with the scent of the first and last forests. The resulting objects distill vast\, seemingly impossible distances into elegant forms\, bringing our attention to an immense and tangible reality that lies beyond the limits of ordinary perception. New works in this exhibition expand on Mirage\, 2023\, the monumental glass artwork first developed by Paterson and longtime collaborators\, architectural studio Zeller & Moye\, for a major public sculpture for Apple Park in Cupertino. Mirage comprises over four hundred glass columns made with sand collected from deserts across the Earth. Together the columns combine the world’s deserts\, transforming them into walls of glass flowing like dunes shaped by the wind. \nSpanning the entire floor of the back gallery\, Circe\, 2024\, features a minimalist arrangement of glass slices\,\ntransitioning in a gradient from clear to pale blue\, aquamarine and green hues. The artwork fuses together\nsand from a diverse range of deserts\, including mountainous\, subtropical\, coastal\, rain-shadow\, volcanic\, and\npolar deserts\, as well as fossilized deserts that date back millions of years. Shifting layers of translucency and\ncolor within the glass create illusionary effects. The artwork appears like an apparition: blurring the visible and\ninvisible\, inside and outside\, near and far. Like Mirage\, Circe has a strong material presence\, reflecting its immediate environment even as it contains an enormity of distant landscapes. Spectre\, 2024\, produced in collaboration with The Studio of the Corning Museum of Glass\, uses the same transportive material to stage a more intimate encounter. The viewer is invited to gaze through a window created from the sands of all the Earth’s deserts combined. Visitors see into the depths of time and space where millions of years merge. These works offer a deep and immersive connection to landscape\, and a moment of reflection\, encouraging visitors to pause\, and attune themselves to the vastness and fragility of our planet. In this stillness\, one encounters a collection of geological times and a plurality of states of being. \nA unifying theme that emerges from these works is the exploration of time and transformation through\nmateriality. “Paterson looks to the stars\, the seas\, the earth and\, with an ethical generosity\, invites consideration of how we might attempt to understand these limits\,” Lisa Le Feuvre\, Director of the Holt/Smithson Foundation\, writes. Paterson draws deep connections between natural materials and their origins\, spanning from ancient ice cores to the earliest life forms and matter predating the Sun. In doing so\, she creates objects that reflect the continuity and interrelation of the Earth’s history\, urging viewers to contemplate the intricate web of life and time that binds our existence to the natural world while creating space for transcendence and wonder. \nThis exhibition will be punctuated by several intimate stagings of Paterson’s incense project\, To Burn\, Forest\, Fire. SUMMARY:Elias Sime
DESCRIPTION:James Cohan is pleased to present a special exhibition of early work by Elias Sime\, on view at the gallery’s 52 Walker Street viewing room from October 25 through November 23\, 2024. \nElias Sime creates densely layered assemblages of everyday materials\, transforming them into lyrical meditations on the world around him. Predating Sime’s well-known Tightrope series\, these canvases\, made between early 2000s and 2009\, represent the stylistic and conceptual foundations of the artist’s later\, monumental tableaus composed of braided wire and mosaic-like arrangements of electrical components. \nIn this early body of work\, Sime stitches thread\, yarn\, buttons\, bottle caps and other found objects onto canvas\, creating highly textured surfaces and vivid color fields. These works\, ranging from figuration to abstraction\, highlight Sime’s handling of material with the fluency and formal instincts that lie at the heart of his practice. \nThese distinctive works are inspired by traditional Ethiopian practices of weaving and embroidery. Having grown up amidst this tradition\, Sime found the use of the stitched yarn and textile as natural avenues to express himself. By incorporating buttons\, bottle caps\, toy arms\, and clothing\, Sime gives a second life to these objects. In the artist’s own words\, “Each material I collect has its own story\, and has been touched by many hands. It has its own language. All the different stories related to the material move me\, and I transform these intuitive reactions into my compositions.” \nSime encourages viewers to look slowly and closely\, tracing each fiber stitched onto the canvas. By engaging with the work in this way\, we echoe the artist’s own process. Tracy L. Adler\, Director of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College notes\, “This notion of slow looking is integral to Sime’s approach. In our fast-paced world\, he reminds us that we must take the time to observe closely\, to follow each thread. Once we allow ourselves to do so\, we can get lost in the details of Sime’s surfaces. His work initiates a meditative process that encourages engaged study and reflection. As we investigate and interrogate the work\, we also learn about our own process of viewing it.” \nFor Sime\, the history of these materials hold multiplicities of meaning. They suggest the tenuousness of our interconnected world\, alluding to the frictions between tradition and progress and nature and the man-made.

DESCRIPTION:  \nIn her ongoing investigation of the social and aesthetic dimensions of conflict\, Teresa Margolles visualizes the enduring weight of violence. By infusing artwork with material traces of loss\, she shares the stories of the disenfranchised in ways that are acutely visceral\, confronting viewers physically and emotionally. \nFor this exhibition\, Margolles will present a series of painted ceramic vessels from her continued collaboration with a village of artisans in the Northern Mexican state of Chihuahua\, near the U.S./Mexico border. Located in the region near the prehistoric Paquimé archaeological zone or Casas Grandes (the place of the big houses) the ceramicists have suffered greatly from the escalating violence in the area. \n

DESCRIPTION:James Cohan is pleased to present Painting in the Dark\, a group exhibition on view at 52 Walker Street from June 23 to August 5. The gallery will host an opening reception celebrating its summer exhibitions at 48 and 52 Walker on Thursday\, June 23 from 6-9 PM. \nCurated by Glenn Adamson and Kathy Butterly\, Painting in the Dark brings together seven artists\, spanning more than a century\, who exemplify a painterly approach to the ceramic medium. Participating artists include Hugh Robertson (1845-1908)\, Rudy Staffel (1911-2002)\, Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011)\, Rose Cabat (1914-2015)\, Tony Marsh (b. 1954)\, Marit Tingleff (b. 1954)\, and Kathy Butterly (b. 1963). Adamson has written a critical essay to accompany the exhibition.

DESCRIPTION:James Cohan is delighted to share A Lotus in a Sea of Fire\, an exhibition of new work by Tuan Andrew Nguyen\, in our online viewing room. Nguyen’s work explores the power of storytelling and the folklore traditions of diasporic communities. He extracts and re-works dominant\, oftentimes colonial histories and supernaturalisms into imaginative vignettes. \nImage:\nTuan Andrew Nguyen\nA Lotus in a Sea of Fire\, 2019\nHand-carved gmelina wood\n6 1/2 x 13 x 8 in.\n16.5 x 33 x 20.3 cm \n\nIn the video below\, the artist speaks about the exhibition and the making of his film The Boat People. This exhibition coincides with the launch of a new series of original videos that brings James Cohan’s artists\, in their own words\, directly to you. \n \n\n‘There’s a way that spiritual practices\, specifically in Vietnam\, have been embedded with strategies of political resistance. Fire and self-immolation have been well known acts of political resistance where the spiritual and the political collide. Fire becomes a strong metaphor for freedom and liberation\, spiritual and political. This is exemplified in Thich Quang Duc’s act of self-immolation. The image of this action has been burnt deeply into my own psyche. A collision between the spiritual and the political – the struggle for freedom.’\n-Tuan Andrew Nguyen
