SUMMARY:A New Look at Sculpture Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exciting exhibition at the John Natsoulas Gallery features the sculptures of John Buck\, Shaun Burner\, Deborah Butterfield\, Franceska Gamez\, Arthur Gonzalez\, Ken Little\, Manuel Neri\, and Michael Stevens. Come see stunning examples of works by each of these world-renown artists.   \n  \nOpening on January 10\, the exhibition\, titled A New Look at Sculpture\, showcases figurative sculptures by world class artists\, who each sensitively address humanist themes. The show will be open until February 23\, 2024. Featuring diverse sculptures\, made from bronze\, plaster\, wood\, and ceramic\, this exhibit offers the opportunity for close examination of the varied textures and forms these artists achieve. Large-scale sculptures like Deborah Butterfield’s over-life-size bronze horse and Shaun Burner’s and Franceska Gamez’s The Guardian speak to how expanding dimensions can convey the artists’ unique perspective. The exhibit highlights how unique material choices\, such as Michael Steven’s and John Buck’s use of wood or Ken Little’s repurposing of discarded shoes\, lend their works distinctive personality to reveal their inner worlds. A look at the importance of teacher and student relationships\, demonstrated through the juxtaposition of the works of Manuel Neri and Arthur Gonzalez highlights the continual evolution of sculpture in modern and contemporary art. \n  \nThe exhibition’s opening reception is to be held on Friday\, January 12 from 7-9:00 PM. It will feature live music and free refreshments. The John Natsoulas Gallery is proud to also host a panel discussion with exhibition curator Sarah Poisner and artists Shaun Burner\, Franceska Gamez\, Arthur Gonzalez\, and Michael Stevens on Saturday\, February 3. They will speak about their respective sculptural practices and their artistic associations with Sacramento. \n

SUMMARY:Sense of Nature: New Paintings by LeeAnn Brook
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is thrilled to exhibit the series of LeeAnn Brook’s newest paintings. Her poetic landscapes\, in which she artfully blends abstract and figurative styles\, are elegant and enthralling. Originally trained by the troupe l’ceil master\, Ken Davies\, Brook’s current work is rooted in realism\, but transcends that traditional scope. Her new and entirely abstract Haiku Series\, consisting of acrylic paintings on handmade paper\, offer a stunning compliment and contrast to the landscape paintings. \n\n\n“My paintings explore landscape through color and movement\, juxtaposing the abstract and figurative qualities of nature. Working in large format\, I use a layering of colors and textures with an awareness of light that reflects the environments of water\, grasslands\, mountains and forests. Depth is created with the use of subtle patterns of spatter\, strokes and drips\, and is then integrated into the painting as a whole\, where the technique becomes secondary only to the full effect of a vibrant landscape.” – LeeAnn Brook \n\n\nThe opening reception will take place at the John Natsoulas Gallery on December 8th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. It will feature live music and free refreshments.

SUMMARY:Stephen Kaltenbach: Alchemy of Space and Place
DESCRIPTION:Participate in this Once-in-a-Lifetime Installation Exhibition at the John Natsoulas Gallery Stephen Kaltenbach: Alchemy of Space and Place \nExperience the distinctive ways that Stephen Kaltenbach\, the great pioneer of conceptual art\, transmutes space for two unique\, site-specific projects. His construction of a world-famous room design from the 1960s will complement a floor-to-ceiling\, assemblage collaboration with artist\, Seongmin Yoo. \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is thrilled to be hosting the newest exhibition of Stephen Kaltenbach’s space altering\, installation art. Over the course of his career\, Stephen Kaltenbach has been a critical voice in Conceptual Art. Never limiting himself in his practice\, Kaltenbach has explored countless media in order to pose\, and occasionally answer\, questions about the fundamental definitions of art and the greater meaning of life. As a graduate student at UC Davis\, studying ceramics and painting at the height of the Funk Art movement\, Kaltenbach began to contemplate the traditions of fine art. During his meteoric rise in the late 1960s\, he showed in high-profile solo exhibitions at SFMOMA and the Whitney and in some of the most groundbreaking gallery exhibitions of the time. By 1970\, he relocated back to California\, where he became one the region’s most acclaimed artists. Since that time\, Kaltenbach has continued to elude definitive definition in his practice. Never abandoning his conceptual interests\, Kaltenbach has pursued a myriad of provocative projects using unconventional media or designs that require a cerebral interpretation by a thoughtful audience.  \nThis exhibition blends the past and present. A full-scale construction of a room alteration\, akin to those of the 1960s\, will stand alongside an entirely original site-specific multi-media installation. Alongside fellow artist Seongmin Yoo\, Kaltenbach will create an assemblage installation featuring extensive drapery. The full-room installation offers viewers the opportunity to walk throughout the third floor of the gallery to participate in an immersive experience of color and light.  \nThe opening reception will take place on September 2\, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. It will feature free music and refreshments.

SUMMARY:Women of Northern California: Making Meaning for Yesterday\, Today\, and Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:The John Natsoulas Gallery is pleased to announce that\, coinciding with Women’s History Month\, we will be hosting an exhibition entitled Women of Northern California: Making Meaning for Yesterday\, Today\, and Tomorrow. This exceptional exhibit will showcase how women have and continue to develop unique artistic visions that derive from the varied social\, political\, and cultural experiences that are endemic to this particular region. Northern California is a unique nexus of influences\, and the women who are a product of this environment have drawn from diverse sources of inspiration. This exhibition and the accompanying publication will contribute to the overdue recognition of many of these outstanding artists. While women have played a crucial role in building the regional artistic community and have pushed art making in new directions\, their persisting exclusion from the artistic canon is an issue that needs correcting. This exhibit is a celebration of the strong\, influential women who have led the way in establishing and developing artistic movements and media. It will also offer the opportunity to explore the many ways in which these artists have contextualized and represent their experiences living as women in Northern California. Through this examination of both historic and contemporary art\, the collection of art will highlight the tenacity of the artistic legacies that women establish\, often for other women. By looking at the past and present\, we aim to reveal the vision of the future. \nThe opening reception for the exhibition will be on Saturday March 4 from 7:00 – 9:00pm. There will be refreshments and a performance by one of the featured artists – Allison Fall. Come enjoy a night to celebrate seven decades of art by Northern California’s most notable women artists. \nFeatured Artist: \nSalma Arastu\, Ruth Asawa\, Joan Brown\, Squeak Carnwath\, Julia Couzens\, Jay DeFeo\, Allison Fall\, Viola Frey\, Kim Frohsin\, Franceska Gamez\, Michelle Gregor\, Lynn Hershman Leeson\, Laura Hohlwein\, Mildred Howard\, Margaret Keelan\, Sahar Khoury\, Marilyn Levine\, Hung Liu\, Pat Mahony\, Kara Maria\, Klea McKenna\, Jenna Meacham\, Michelle Murillo\, Deborah Oropallo\, Emmy Lou Packard\, Maija Peeples-Bright\, Lucy Puls\, Rachelle Reichert\, Lisa Reinertson\, M. SUMMARY:Mark Bulwinkle Retrospective Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis\, California to see selected sculptures and prints from the 50-year career of the legendary artist Mark Bulwinkle\, the Oakland-based innovator of graphically cut steel. The exhibition will be open from January 11th\, 2023 to February 25\, 2023. A public reception with music and refreshments will be held on January 13th\, 2023\, 7:00-9:00 pm.  \nKnown for his manic steel silhouettes of dog-faced flowers and perverse\, joyful figures with electrified grins\, Mark Bulwinkle’s nutty artwork can be spotted across the Pacific coast\, displayed proudly in windows\, overgrown gardens\, and small businesses. Bulwinkle’s graphically cut steel propelled him into fame\, influencing the creation of Burning Man in the 1980s and even leading him to reject an interview with Oprah in 1991. However\, lesser known but equally impressive is his extensive work in diverse media: ceramics\, silkscreen\, papier-mache\, and even digital illustration. His mastery acquired from 100-hour work weeks as a ship welder for Bethlehem Steel was important to the development of his cut steel works\, but equally key was his early training as a skilled printmaker and graphic artist. Bulwinkle received an MFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1974\, making hundreds of fabulously intricate industrial enamel silkscreens and woodcuts. In these early years\, he also learned ceramic slipcasting techniques from the renowned trompe l’oeil artist Richard Shaw.  \nThis retrospective exhibition showcases Bulwinkle’s mastery of color and form in both two and three dimensions throughout the last five decades\, tracing the development of his art through diverse materials and revealing the stories embedded in his work. On display are a selection of his woodcuts and screen prints\, including several gorgeous prints from his time at the San Francisco Art Institute. Bulwinkle’s flamboyant ceramic works from graduate school will also be featured\, as well as papier-mache works that once decorated the walls of his iconic Manilla St. House\, a towering steel assemblage sculpture built around a modest townhouse that became a landmark in Oakland from 1975-1991. Recent cut steel works painted with colorful enamel will also be featured\, which are often imitated but unmistakably Bulwinkle’s.  \nThe John Natsoulas Gallery is delighted to exhibit half a century of works from this rather singular artist. In addition\, we are overjoyed to present “Freedumb\,” our brand new 18-foot steel piece by Mark Bulwinkle\, installed on the gallery façade.

SUMMARY:Funk Art Exhibition at John Natsoulas Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis\, California for the upcoming\, captivating exhibition California Funk to Figuration: A New Narrative Mythology. The exhibition will be open from September 7 to January 7\, 2022. The opening reception is on September 9\, and will feature live music and free beverages. \nThis exhibition will feature works by the incredible men and women who shaped the Funk Movement. Through their artworks\, including painting\, sculpture\, and works on paper\, Funk artists consciously undermine expectations. The colorful works all playfully address narrative themes\, some more enigmatic than others. Funk Art organically emerged in the 1960s in the leading art schools in California as a rebellious response to both the restrictiveness of Bay Area Figurative Art and the non-objectivity of Abstract Expressionism. While Funk Art has continued to elude a decisive definition\, its hallmark is a significant degree of absurdity. Artists famously responded\, “when you see it\, you know it\,” when asked to describe the movement. \nThose championing the ridiculousness that is the fundamental doctrine of Funk are known for their collaborations and the impressive followings that they inspired among their students. Some of the artists whose works will be on display include Roy De Forest\, Robert Arneson\, Peter Saul\, Robert Colescott\, David Gilhooly\, Louise Stanely\, Patrick Siler\, Jim Albertson\, Gladyss Nielsson\, Jim Nutt and many more. The Funk Movement is often categorized as a West Coast art style\, but this show will bring together artists from California and the other major center of the style- Chicago. This exhibition will highlight the shared philosophies of different generations of artists\, who all imbued their works with unorthodox tradition and self-referential humor. \nCome visit the John Natsoulas Gallery for the very exciting opportunity to see historic artwork that truly captures the energy and absurdism of the Funk Movement. \n

SUMMARY:Artists for Amnesty
DESCRIPTION:“Artists for Amnesty” is the earliest benefit exhibition in the history of Amnesty International. Founded over three decades ago by John Natsoulas\, it was the first to give artists the opportunity to support the organization through their artwork. Now\, hoping to amplify artists’ demands for peace and understanding in troubling times\, the John Natsoulas Gallery is hosting a new “Artists for Amnesty” exhibition and benefit in collaboration with international activists and artists. Reviving a great tradition\, the artist community can once again foster a dialogue with the world through their art while helping to raise funds for refugees\, asylum seekers\, political prisoners\, those enduring torture\, and other victims of human rights abuses. This is a rare opportunity to see fine works from around the world\, while contributing to efforts towards peace and common understanding between all humanity. This exhibition will feature artists from over 10 different countries. \n\n\n\n\nOn May 7\, 2022\, a benefit party and opening reception will be held at the John Natsoulas Gallery. It will feature multiple live bands\, refreshments\, and a stellar exhibition representing global artistic perspectives. \n\n\n\n\n\nAll proceeds will benefit those who face great injustice in Ukraine and around the world.

SUMMARY:Jamie Madison Exhibition "A Walk in the Flatlands" 1/12 to 2/26 in Davis\, CA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the John Natsoulas Gallery for Jamie Madison’s landscape exhibition: “A Walk in the Flatlands”. The show will run from January 12th through February 26th\, 2022.The opening reception will be on Friday\, January\, 14th 2022 from 7 to 9 p.m. \nJamie lives and works in Winters and Sausalito in Northern California. She received a Bachelor of Arts in painting and printmaking at UC Davis\, studying with Wayne Thiebaud and Roland Peterson. She returned full time to painting in 2017 and has recently studied with Fran O’Niell (New York Studio School)\, and Enrique Martinez Celaya. \nMadison’s focus is primarily on making\, particularly on process and choice of materials. She often works on paper\, sometimes collaging handmade monoprints onto acrylic paintings. The paint slides on easily\, dries quickly\, and\, as she says\, “welcomes the next layer with open arms.” In creating work for this exhibition\, Madison gravitated toward larger\, sturdier formats\, first wood panels\, and then stretched linen. As she worked on the panels\, hot pinks and bright reds began to emerge over the slick surfaces\, a reflection of the orange sky of the distant wildfires. When she switched to oils on stretched linen\, a softer\, more forgiving surface\, she encountered an unexpected shift: a cooler\, soothing palette materialized. The compositions refocused from distant horizons to smaller details of the land — puddles and woodland debris – things that are nearby and underfoot\, perhaps embedded in the earth itself. Madison’s striking paintings from the last eighteen months do not merely chronicle changes in the landscape but crystallize her reverence for the humming web of life that she has discovered in the flatlands. She is a witness to the landscape’s inexorable fragility in the face of industrial man’s epic battle against nature. \nFor more information visit https://www.natsoulas.com/event/jamie-madison-exhibition/ \nJohn Natsoulas Gallery \n521 First St \nDavis\, CA 95616 \n530-756-3938

SUMMARY:Kelly Detweiler Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the John Natsoulas Gallery for Kelly Detweiler’s upcoming exhibition! It runs from December 8th\, 2021through January 8th\, 2022 and there will be an opening reception on December 11th at 7pm. \nKelly Detweiler grew up in Colorado and moved to the San Diego area as a teenager. He attended Grossmont College before transferring to California State University at Hayward. Teachers such as Clayton Bailey\, Mel Ramos\, Raymond Saunders\, Harold Schlotzhauer\, Misch Kohn and Kenji Nanao helped shape his artistic sensibility that was primarily focused in ceramics when he arrived. Slowly this focus broadened to include painting and drawing. Graduate school followed and he was fortunate enough to attend University of California\, Davis which included faculty members Robert Arneson\, Roy DeForest\, Wayne Thiebaud\, Manuel Neri\, and David Gilhooly. During the summer between the two academic years of graduate study\, he was chosen to go to Skowhegan School in Maine. \nAfter graduate school\, Kelly spent some time in Oregon with DeForest’s famous dogs Ratu and Dido. This was followed by a period living and working for Robert Arneson in Benicia. He moved to Berkeley in 1979 and worked in a studio in West Oakland. During this period he taught at Diablo Valley College and at American River College on a part time basis. In 1981 he was married and his oldest son was born later that same year. In 1982 he began his teaching career at Santa Clara. He has taught at Santa Clara since that time with the one exception of 2002 when he taught for Gonzaga University in Florence while on sabbatical from Santa Clara. He has five children Christopher\, Elly\, Julia\, Colleen and James. \nKelly has forged a long term relationship with a group of artists in Japan and has traveled there many times to exhibit his work. He has also shown his work in Germany and is included in the permanent collection at the Villa Haiss Museum in Zell. He has curated many exhibits in the San Jose area with the most recent being the “Pacific Rim Art Now 2003” at Works\, San Jose.

SUMMARY:Kati Thomson Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Kati Thomson’s exhibition will run from November 10th through December 4th and there will be an opening night on November 13th from 7 to 9pm. \nKati Thomson is a California native\, which has informed each of her creative efforts.  Kati was born in Fresno and returned to the Central Valley after living in both Southern and Northern California for work and education.  After a long career in healthcare\, her need to tell stories has taken her from writing novels\, screenplays and poetry\, to film production and then to visual art. Working mostly in oil\, Kati paints a variety of subjects both from life and in her studio in Clovis\, California with a focus on Figurative art. \n“Im drawn again and again to the human figure\, the faces around me. What is it about the placement of a single line that creates or destroys recognition between one human and another – in implied motion/rest\, attractiveness/non-attractiveness\, inner dialogue. We read body language without thinking and in a way create a story about other people with so little real information. How is it that we can draw so much understanding of a person with just a crease between the brow or the position of a head? \nI like things a little disordered\, creating clarity in the things that are important to me and letting the rest fall apart a little. When I was writing\, I imagined my story in a series of vignettes. And while I could picture every detail of my characters – their intentions\, thoughts\, feelings – I struggled with the links between the scenes. As a visual artist I realize that those missing details are the mysteries of human stories and I prefer leaving them up to the viewer.”

SUMMARY:The Beat Goes On: Poets as Painters
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see the best poets of the Beat generation’s artwork in-person. Paintings\, illustrations\, self-portraiture\, and portraits of Beat contemporaries will be on display by Jack Kerouac\, Gregory Corso\, Allen Ginsberg\, Lawrence Ferlinghetti\, Robert LaVigne\, Mohammed Mrabet\, Paul Bowles\, Harold Norse\, Carolyn Cassady\, Brion Gysin\, Lew Welch\, Kenneth Patchen\, William S. Burroughs\, and Michael McClure. Joe Lee and John Natsoulas curated this incredible exhibition to show the incredible diversity of poetry\, artwork\, and ephemera of the Beat poets and painters. \nLike all labels that stick\, the nickname “Beat” richly and succinctly characterizes major aspects of its so-called movement\, which sprang from the ecstatic and tortured rhythms of visionary poets\, painters\, and musicians. Tellingly\, informatively\, paradoxically\, meanings of “beat” extend from a resolute self-affirming strike and an appointed path to their dark opposite–dissipated and hopelessly exhausted resolution or morale. “Beats” can also mean a dissonant battering set up by discordant patterns. \nThe Beat Goes On will run from November 10th through December 4th. \nOn November 13th from 6:30 to 10pm\, there will be an opening night with live jazz and poetry\,  featuring performances by Gregory Carter Dr. Andy Jones\, John Natsoulas\, and Tony Passarell Trio. The Linda Bair Dance Company will perform the original dance “Jack Kerouac”.

SUMMARY:Seongmin Yoo Exhibition: Bondage to Freedom
DESCRIPTION:Seongmin Yoo is a Korean-born conceptual and installation artist that now lives in America. Known for her inventive use of space and materials\, her body of work involves collage\, painting\, video\, performance\, and installation. Seongmin often utilizes traditional Korean techniques that her mother taught her.  Seongmin says she owes most of her success to the decades of experience and extensive knowledge gifted to her by her mentors. Her exhibition will be held at the John Natsoulas Gallery from August 4-30\, 2021.\n\nSeongmin’s work deals with both her personal struggles and political struggles. Her artwork has often dealt with spirituality\, the body\, and women’s rights. She uses the raw materials she collects in nature to speak about the cyclical nature of life and the inevitability of being repurposed or reborn. Lately\, however\, she has focused on the interaction between her east and west identities. Her current show\, “Bondage to Freedom”\, addresses the newfound freedoms and experiences that she’s had living in America as an artist and as a woman. She discusses that in Korea\, women are pressured to be submissive and demure but in America she is encouraged to be expressive\, particularly as an artist. She also finds that her pieces\, while still made with Korean artistic techniques\, are having more and more American influences. As the effects of Americanization become more salient and her world becomes more of a melting pot\, she is forced to reckon with the dissonance that comes with merging multiple established identities.\n\nA contemporary of Wangechi Mutu\, Lin Tianmiao and Tania Brugeera she is working in the ethno-futurism aesthetic. Her work features startling hybrid figures and otherworldly images that evoke the idea of breaking free from a life of servitude. In her current body of work\, she is using video and installation art to address ideas like intruders\, torture and subjugation. Problems that women face in Korea like footbinding\, misogyny\, and sexist gender roles manifest in Seongmin’s surrealistic figures being shackled\, attacked\, and\, ultimately\, liberated. Provocative\, powerful\, and profound\, Seongmin Yoo is considered one of the most important conceptual installation artists of our time.
