SUMMARY:My Sister\, My Self
DESCRIPTION:Presented in conjunction with CPW in Kingston\, the exhibition is curated by Bard College art historians Tom Wolf and Laurie Dahlberg\, and is the first full-scale retrospective of the artists\, both longtime Woodstock residents.    \nDuring the 1970s and ‘80s\, photographers Colleen Kenyon (American\, 1951-2022) and Kathleen Kenyon (American\, 1951-2023) were part of the women artists’ movement that challenged the photographic establishment with innovative approaches to the medium. Colleen Kenyon made hand-colored portraits of herself and her identical twin sister\, while her sister\, Kathleen Kenyon\, appropriated gender-specific images of women from the mass media to create ironic photomontages. During the 1980s and ‘90s\, the Kenyon sisters served as Director (Colleen) and Associate Director (Kathleen) of the Center for Photography at Woodstock.  \nMy Sister\, My Self also features photographs by other identical twin women artists.  Frances McLaughlin-Gill and Kathryn McLaughlin Abbe were successful fashion photographers and co-authors of the book Twins on Twins. Another pair of sisters\, Ellen Kahn and Lynda Kahn\, are Emmy award-winning artists known for their futuristic self-portraits and bold\, graphic tableaux. By including work by other twin women artists\, My Sister\, My Self contextualizes the rarified world of twins while exploring visual dualities and women’s identities in post Roe v. Wade America. \nMORE ABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nEllen Kahn and Lynda Kahn\, Emmy-award winning\, twin team\, multi-disciplinary artists (AKA TwinArt) are recognized as pioneers in digital media. They are recipients of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship grant in Visual Arts in 1981. Since the early 80s\, TwinArt participated in exhibitions internationally in museums and galleries\, including The Whitney\, Pompidou Centre\, ICA London\, Nassau County Museum of Art\, Laguna Art Museum\, and Tokyo Video Biennale. Nam June Paik\, the father of video art and mentor to TwinArt\, collaborated with Ellen and Lynda on “Bye Bye Kipling”\, a satellite broadcast airing on television in the US\, Japan and Korea. Polaroid sponsored TwinArt’s large format photographs (20X24 project) and short films. Their creative directorial accomplishments include “Peewee’s Playhouse”\, “Pucci Love”\, “Composition in Op”\, and “Arrested Development”. Absolut Vodka artist series selected the duo to design ABSOLUT TWINART\, a magazine ad and digital poster\, in the collection of Sweden’s Spritmuseum. The record label Modern Harmonic released the double vinyl LP “TwinArt presents: Instant This / Instant That.” TwinArt exhibited “AfterGlow X TwinArt” at Melissa Morgan Fine Art in Palm Desert\, CA. In 2025\, exhibitions include the AI series “TwinArt in the Museum” at the Center for Photography in Woodstock and Wexler Gallery. Ellen graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BFA from Tyler School of Art in Rome and Philadelphia. Lynda graduated with honors and an MFA from The Art Institute of Chicago. Ellen Kahn currently lives in NYC\, while Lynda Kahn resides in LA. \nFrances McLaughlin-Gill and Kathryn McLaughlin Abbe (1919 – 2014) broke the glass ceiling for women in photography. They each had distinguished careers: Abbe was a photographer of fashion icons\, entertainment personalities\, children\, street vignettes\, and artists\, and McLaughlin-Gill was the first contracted female fashion photographer for Vogue magazine. In addition to fashion photographs\, her images included celebrity photos and still lifes for editorials and covers of House & Garden. Together the sisters wrote and published Twins on Twins (1981) and Twin Lives in Photography (2011). The sisters were the subject of a 2009 documentary\, Twin Lenses produced by Nina Rosenblum\, which highlighted their pioneering roles in photography and included interviews with the sisters.

SUMMARY:THE DOLL SHOW
DESCRIPTION:The Doll Show\nCurated by Eva Melas\, Portia Munson & Carri Skoczek\nOctober 12- November 24\, 2024\nGallery Hours: Friday – Sunday\, 12-6 pm or by appointment\nARTIST’S RECEPTION: Sunday\, October 13\, 2024  3:00 – 5:00 PM \nThe Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild presents The Doll Show – a group exhibition of artists who have incorporated dolls into their creative practices. Curated by  Eva Melas\, Portia Munson and Carri Skoczek. \nThis exhibition explores the dual nature of dolls—both eerie and endearing\, drawing from a broad range of doll representations\, including beloved figures like Raggedy Ann\, Chatty Cathy and Barbie\, as well as culturally significant artifacts such as folk art dolls\, Mexican paper mache figures\, Haitian voodoo dolls\, and ethnic dolls in traditional costumes. This broad spectrum highlights how dolls can embody fairy tales\, personal memories\, and cultural narratives. Also included in The Doll Show will be hundreds of dolls from private collections hung and arranged together on a large wall.  \nHistorically\, dolls have served diverse roles: as messengers to ancestors and deities\, ritualistic tools\, educational aids\, instruments of political satire\, and mystical objects of protection.  This exhibition showcases an array of artistic styles and interpretations\, ranging from social commentary to whimsical\, metaphorical\, magical\, and even terrifying representations. The artworks on display reflect the multifaceted nature of dolls—some crafted to offer protection\, others to provoke\, and many to captivate with their beauty or evoke a sense of the uncanny. \nThe Doll Show features the work of 44 artists. Including; Vivian Baumann\,Corinne Botz\,Katherine Burger\,Dina Bursztyn\,Russell Busch\,Ellenora Cage\,Susan Carr\,Rani Carson\,Julia Chase\,E.V. SUMMARY:Ford Crull | Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:(Woodstock\, NY): Ford Crull explores symbols in this series of densely painted and colorful compositions. Using forms such as hearts\, wings\, crosses\, and figures\, Crull grounds his vocabulary in brilliant hues that shimmer and dance across the canvas. Fleeting words and phrases\, also float across the surface while a myriad of emblems imply romantic suffering\, occult wisdom\, and spiritual release. Co-existing in a mystical atmosphere in which these forms dissolve and regroup among layers of jewel-like color. These works are personal meditations\, but free from their origins and now serving as archetypes. These paintings are meditations on emotions seeking resolution. \nFORD CRULL\, curated by Carter Ratcliff\, opens with an artist’s reception on Saturday August 17\, from 4:00pm – 6:00 pm and remains on view through September 29\, 2024. \nABOUT FORD CRULL:\nA resident of Willow\, NY\, Ford Crull was raised in Seattle\, where he graduated from the University of Washington. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the National Gallery\, Dayton Art Institute\, and the Brooklyn Museum. His paintings were included in the important 1989 Moscow exhibition\, “Painting After the Death of Painting\,” curated by Donald Kuspit. Recent exhibitions have included shows in Shanghai\, London\, Milan\, and Seattle.\nMore about Ford Crull: www.fordcrull.com \nRECEPTION WINE provided by COOL VINES

SUMMARY:Ordinary Alchemy | Hayoon Jay Lee\, Doug Navarra & Xuewu Zheng
DESCRIPTION:The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is pleased to present Ordinary Alchemy\, an exhibition of site-specific installations and wall works by Hayoon Jay Lee and Xuewu Zheng\, and altered antiques by Doug Navarra at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts. \nCurated by Emilie Houssart\, Ordinary Alchemy opens on Saturday\, January 13th\, 2024\, and runs through Sunday\, February 25th. The opening reception is on Saturday\, January 20\, 2024\, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm\, with artist talks and a performance by Hayoon Jay Lee at 4.30 pm. \nThe three artists in this exhibit present works based on the processing of mundane cultural ephemera: printed papers\, grains of rice\, vintage documents\, and rusted old tools. These humble\, utilitarian materials are transmuted with extraordinary care and labor into unfamiliar forms that command new attention. \nHayoon Jay Lee uses grains of rice to weave together narratives of thriving and inequity in daily human histories around the globe. Exquisitely configured in mass\, Lee’s works call us to be present with opposing forces in tension: need and abundance\, striving and fulfillment\, connected in the fragility and power of basic daily nourishment. \nDoug Navarra cultivates relationships with found historical documents and objects connected with the daily working lives of the past. Navarra’s responses honor these unique\, everyday artifacts and their associated workers – simultaneously decommissioning the objects with new layers illuminating the distance between a past world and our own. \nThrough deep and ongoing meditative labor\, Xuewu Zheng works everyday found objects into forms embedded with vast quantities of social data. His source materials\, which include international newspapers\, religious texts\, and fast food receipts\, are reformed through small\, repetitive actions into massive post-legible archives that recall burial mounds\, trash piles; ancient scrolls\, and food mats. \nThe Kleinert/James Center for the Arts is open Friday – Sunday\, 12 -5 pm or by appointment. Exhibition runs from January 13 – February 25\, 2024\, with an artists’ reception on Saturday. January 20\, 4:00 – 6:00 PM. More info: https://bit.ly/ordinaryalchemy \nONLINE CATALOGUE

SUMMARY:TASHA DEPP | Upstate Lost & Found
DESCRIPTION:Tasha Depp | Upstate Lost & Found October 7 – November 29\, 2023 \nReception for the Artist: October 7\, 4-6pm \nTasha Depp’s three-dimensional paintings are conversations between real life and representation\, predictability and chance\, priorities and play. Borrowing from trompe l’oeil techniques\, decorative folk art tole painting\, and the European fine arts tradition\, Depp paints her subjects precisely and with such attention that her accurate paintings deceive the eye. She depicts the details of prosaic objects on random substrates: an Apple charger balances on a shattered car bumper\, wild brambles crackle on a fiberglass shard\, and an acrylic carpet dissolves into a struggle with nature itself. \nWith deft Old Master brushwork\, Depp transforms an assortment of plastic and metal detritus giving them new life as archival surfaces. These discarded relics of consumerism lend a texture and humility that makes the work accessible and\, at times\, quite humorous. Her ironic pairing of random plastics with exquisitely painted imagery of people\, places\, and things\, conceptually probes mythic dichotomies of contemporary American life: work and leisure\, have and have-nots\, nature and trash as well as the contradictions between low brow and high art. Celebrating the endless diversity of experience\, Tasha Depp invites us into an equanimous realm where the random and the antithetical can still make poetry together. Curated by Eva Melas and Paula Lalala.

SUMMARY:HOMING INSTINCT: A Film Installation by Lydia Dean Pilcher
DESCRIPTION:(Woodstock\, NY) – The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is pleased to present Homing Instinct\, written & directed by Lydia Dean Pilcher on view September 27 – October 1\, 2023\, 10am – 6pm in conjunction with the Woodstock Film Festival at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts\, 36 Tinker Street\, Woodstock\, NY. Homing Instinct is 26 minutes playing on a continuous loop every half hour. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday\, September 29\, 4 – 6pm. \nAn immersive cinematic installation\, Homing Instinct is based on the story by Dani McClain published in the anthology\, Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. The exhibition is supported by a Silver Sun Foundation residency. \nHoming Instinct evokes a world of shifting layers\, juxtaposing neorealism with the vast metaphysical sweep of nature. The audience is invited into a poetic and powerful aesthetic experience to imagine an interconnectedness as a species of nature in our changing world. \nThe story is set in the near future in a desperate moment of rising sea level. Two friends face a federal executive order to evacuate New York City and relocate within 30 days. The metaphorical question arises\, “Are you a fish or a bird?” Raven\, a psychologist studying the roots of extremism\, and Paloma\, a marine biologist at the Coney Island Aquarium\, encounter a time traveler in different ways. Existential questions around government authority and the individual are explored using the language of dance to reimagine our relationship with nature. The starring roles are played by Barrett Doss (Station 19\, Grey’s Anatomy) and Kineta Kunutu (The Blacklist\, Citadel)\, alongside a cast of accomplished talent. A steel sculpture\, “Queen Coils\,” by the artist’s brother\, sculptor/welder Jay Bradley Pilcher\, is featured in Homing Instinct\, as a thematic symbol of the creative spirit of human change and nature. “Queen Coils” will be on display in the exhibition.

SUMMARY:SELF: Portraits + Places | Brenda Goodman\, Julie Heffernan & Elisa Jensen
DESCRIPTION:(Woodstock\, NY) – The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is pleased to present Self: Portraits + Places\, a three-woman exhibition of paintings\, curated by Melinda Stickney-Gibson. The artists in this exhibit\, Brenda Goodman\, Julie Heffernan and Elisa Jensen\, separately consider aspects of space and being. For Brenda Goodman\, the notion of Self is mirrored by the unflinching gaze of the canvas while Julie Heffernan weaves Selfhood from the skeins of dreams and visions.  Elisa Jensen turns away from both figure and fantasy to instead place the Self squarely in the geography of light and object. Like three Fates\, these artists present separate visions of Selfhood as a physical entity\, a mystic mythology\, or the actual spaces we inhabit. These various concepts\, brought back together\, encompass the layered experience of being human.  \nAbout the Artists in SELF: Portrait + Places \nBrenda Goodman: Considered “one of the most powerful and disturbing achievements of portraiture in modern art” by critic John Yau\, Brenda Goodman paints herself in full-body\, naked and standing alone in her own studio.
