DESCRIPTION:The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild presents a sonic collaboration with BIO-SPHERE\, an acoustic sculpture by Ian Laughlin together with improvised compositions by renowned musician David Van Tieghem will be performed in front of the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild’s Office Complex located at 34 Tinker Street\, Woodstock\, NY\, Sunday\, Aug 4\, 2pm. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nIan Laughlin – Originally from New Zealand\, Ian Laughlin is a multi-media eco-artist who was active in New York City’s throughout the 80s. A resident of the Hudson Valley since 1990\, Laughlin has been dedicated to exploring injustices and finding solutions to the many challenges facing the planet through his art installations and acoustic sculptures. \nDavid Van Tieghem is an American composer and sound designer known for his philosophy of utilizing any available object as a percussion instrument. In his long career\, Van Tieghem has performed and composed for numerous films and productions as well as recording his own work for Warner Bros. Along with many other awards\, Van Tieghem was the recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship for Music Composition (2007). This event is free and open to the public. \nABOUT THE EXHIBITION PIXERINA WITCHERINA MAGISTERIUM \nIn the exhibition Pixerina Witcherina Magisterium\, curator Julie Heffernan brings together the works of Joan Bankemper\, Ruth Marten and Jenny Lynn McNutt in an abundant display of “too muchness.”  Based on Virginia Woolf’s term for her secret language of play\, Pixerina Witcherina captures a whirlwind of weird sculptural forms\, heady designs and humorous portraits in a powerful exploration of these artists’ rich interior worlds.  \nABOUT THE PARTICIPANTS: \nJoan Bankemper: Joan Bankemper received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and  MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Upon moving to NYC she radically challenged her academic training to site specific installations using vegetation and the community as her primary medium; her ‘social practice’ was fully incorporated in her art making. Bankemper has shown with Creative Time\, Inc.\, NY; The New Museum\, NY; Artpace\, San Antonio\, TX; The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum\, Boston\, MA; and Wave Hill\, Riverdale\, NY. Bankemper received grants from The George Sugarman Foundation and the NEA. The McColl Center of Visual Arts awarded her the Gabi Award. Bankemper’s videos and videograms have been exhibited at Leo Castelli Gallery NY; The Museum of Contemporary Art\, Los Angeles; The Detroit Institute of the Arts; The Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea\, Milan; Marianne Boesky Gallery\, NY and the Hirshhorn Museum\, Washington\, DC. \nJenny Lynn McNutt – Jenny Lynn McNutt is a visual artist whose practice encompasses painting\, drawing and ceramic sculpture. Originally from Tennessee\, McNutt has spent the past 30 years living and working in Brooklyn\, NY\, and recently set up a studio in an old church in upstate NY as well.  McNutt earned an MFA from Yale School of Art and was a Fulbright fellow to West and Central Africa. For her documentary work in West Africa she received an Eastman Foundation grant. Jenny Lynn McNutt has shown her work both nationally and internationally\, including North Africa and China. In 2019 her ceramic sculptures were included in the American Academy of Arts & Letters Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts. Other recent exhibitions in NYC include: Ceramics + Drawing into Sculpture\, Anthro-Shift\, and Cosmophilia. Her work will be featured in an upcoming group show entitled Biophilia at Pamela Salisbury in Hudson\, NY\, and in 2025\, a solo exhibition of her work will be presented at the New York Studio School\, where she currently teaches.  \nJulie Heffernan – Julie Heffernan is an American artist whose paintings reflect on environmental\, (art) historical\, feminist\, literary\, social\, and political subjects. Heffernan was raised in Northern California\, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking and painting from University of California at Santa Cruz\, and earned her MFA at Yale School of Art. She is a Professor of Fine Arts at Montclair State University and Co-founder of the journal Painters on Paintings. Heffernan will be having a solo exhibition in November at Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco and her graphic novel Babe in the Woods\, or the Art of Getting Lost (Algonquin) will be coming out in September. \nNatania Rosenfeld – Natania Rosenfeld is a writer\, independent scholar and Professor Emerita of English (Knox College). She has recently published her second poetry collection: The Blue Bed (Spuyten Duyvil\, 2021) and her first book of poetry\, Wild Domestic was published in 2015 (Sheep Meadow Press). Natania Rosenfeld has also published a critical book\, Outsiders Together: Virginia and Leonard Woolf (Princeton\, 2000)\, and a chapbook of essays\, She and I (Essay Press\, May 2018). Her essays\, poems and fiction are forthcoming or have appeared in journals including AGNI\, Yale Review\, APR\, Raritan\, Gettysburg Review\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, Prairie Schooner and Southwest Review\, and four essays have been listed as “Notable” in Best American Essays collections. In 2018\, Rosenfeld was named one of 30 “Writers to Watch” by the Guild Literary Complex in Chicago. Natania Rosenfeld continues to teach literature courses for adults through the Newberry Library and the Graham School at the University of Chicago. \nAbout the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild: \nThe Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is a regional center for the arts located in Woodstock\, New York. From its 250-acre mountainside campus and its arts and performance center in the village of Woodstock\, Byrdcliffe offers an integrated program of exhibitions\, performances\, classes\, workshops\, symposia\, and artists’ residencies. Bankemper has received a number of grants and awards\, including a George Sugarman Foundation grant\, the NEA\, and the Gabi Award from the McColl Center in Uptown Charlotte\, NC\, and most recently the Pollock Krasner in 2023\, .  \nRuth Marten – Formerly a book and fashion illustrator as well as the first female tattoo artist in New York City (when it was still illegal!)\, Marten brings a consummate artistry to her drawings\, transforming old prints into cutting edge aesthetic responses to our most pressing contemporary issues. An ease and suppleness characterize her linework\, lifting the original print to another plane of beauty with masterly skill and an absurdist’s wit. Marten has exhibited her work widely\, both nationally and internationally\, most recently in Cologne\, Germany at the Van der Grinten Galerie and in a retrospective entitled Dream Lover at the Max Ernst Museum in Brül\, Germany. \nJenny Lynn McNutt –  Jenny Lynn McNutt has shown her work both nationally and internationally\, in such far flung venues as China and West Africa. In 2019 her ceramic sculptures were included in the American Academy of Arts & Letters\, Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts in NY\, McNutt’s work will be featured in an upcoming group show entitled Biophilia at Pamela Salisbury\, Hudson\, NY. DESCRIPTION:The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is pleased to present Ordinary Alchemy\, an exhibition of site-specific installations and wall works by Hayoon Jay Lee and Xuewu Zheng\, and altered antiques by Doug Navarra at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts. \nCurated by Emilie Houssart\, Ordinary Alchemy opens on Saturday\, January 13th\, 2024\, and runs through Sunday\, February 25th. The opening reception is on Saturday\, January 20\, 2024\, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm\, with artist talks and a performance by Hayoon Jay Lee at 4.30 pm. \nThe three artists in this exhibit present works based on the processing of mundane cultural ephemera: printed papers\, grains of rice\, vintage documents\, and rusted old tools. These humble\, utilitarian materials are transmuted with extraordinary care and labor into unfamiliar forms that command new attention. \nHayoon Jay Lee uses grains of rice to weave together narratives of thriving and inequity in daily human histories around the globe. Exquisitely configured in mass\, Lee’s works call us to be present with opposing forces in tension: need and abundance\, striving and fulfillment\, connected in the fragility and power of basic daily nourishment. \nDoug Navarra cultivates relationships with found historical documents and objects connected with the daily working lives of the past. Navarra’s responses honor these unique\, everyday artifacts and their associated workers – simultaneously decommissioning the objects with new layers illuminating the distance between a past world and our own. \nThrough deep and ongoing meditative labor\, Xuewu Zheng works everyday found objects into forms embedded with vast quantities of social data. His source materials\, which include international newspapers\, religious texts\, and fast food receipts\, are reformed through small\, repetitive actions into massive post-legible archives that recall burial mounds\, trash piles; ancient scrolls\, and food mats. \nThe Kleinert/James Center for the Arts is open Friday – Sunday\, 12 -5 pm or by appointment. DESCRIPTION:Scrap Portrait Workshop\nOn Saturday\, September 28\, 12 – 4pm\, the public is invited to “commission” a free portrait of themselves or a loved one by painter Tasha Depp at the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild’s Kleinert/James Center for the Arts. Depp invites potential subjects to bring in a cast-off object to serve as the “canvas” – this can be a recycled object\, a scrap of packaging\, or other object with a flat surface that the artist can use to paint on along with a photograph of the portrait subject.\nThere are eight 30 min time slots available in the gallery and the artist will start the painting on the participant’s chosen repurposed surface which will then be finished later in the artist’s studio. DESCRIPTION:Tasha Depp | Upstate Lost & Found October 7 – November 29\, 2023 \nReception for the Artist: October 7\, 4-6pm \nTasha Depp’s three-dimensional paintings are conversations between real life and representation\, predictability and chance\, priorities and play. Borrowing from trompe l’oeil techniques\, decorative folk art tole painting\, and the European fine arts tradition\, Depp paints her subjects precisely and with such attention that her accurate paintings deceive the eye. She depicts the details of prosaic objects on random substrates: an Apple charger balances on a shattered car bumper\, wild brambles crackle on a fiberglass shard\, and an acrylic carpet dissolves into a struggle with nature itself. \nWith deft Old Master brushwork\, Depp transforms an assortment of plastic and metal detritus giving them new life as archival surfaces. These discarded relics of consumerism lend a texture and humility that makes the work accessible and\, at times\, quite humorous. Her ironic pairing of random plastics with exquisitely painted imagery of people\, places\, and things\, conceptually probes mythic dichotomies of contemporary American life: work and leisure\, have and have-nots\, nature and trash as well as the contradictions between low brow and high art. Celebrating the endless diversity of experience\, Tasha Depp invites us into an equanimous realm where the random and the antithetical can still make poetry together. DESCRIPTION:(Woodstock\, NY) – The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is pleased to present Homing Instinct\, written & directed by Lydia Dean Pilcher on view September 27 – October 1\, 2023\, 10am – 6pm in conjunction with the Woodstock Film Festival at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts\, 36 Tinker Street\, Woodstock\, NY. Homing Instinct is 26 minutes playing on a continuous loop every half hour. A reception for the artist will be held on Friday\, September 29\, 4 – 6pm. \nAn immersive cinematic installation\, Homing Instinct is based on the story by Dani McClain published in the anthology\, Octavia’s Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements. The exhibition is supported by a Silver Sun Foundation residency. \nHoming Instinct evokes a world of shifting layers\, juxtaposing neorealism with the vast metaphysical sweep of nature. The audience is invited into a poetic and powerful aesthetic experience to imagine an interconnectedness as a species of nature in our changing world. \nThe story is set in the near future in a desperate moment of rising sea level. Two friends face a federal executive order to evacuate New York City and relocate within 30 days. The metaphorical question arises\, “Are you a fish or a bird?” Raven\, a psychologist studying the roots of extremism\, and Paloma\, a marine biologist at the Coney Island Aquarium\, encounter a time traveler in different ways. Existential questions around government authority and the individual are explored using the language of dance to reimagine our relationship with nature.The starring roles are played by Barrett Doss (Station 19\, Grey’s Anatomy) and Kineta Kunutu (The Blacklist\, Citadel)\, alongside a cast of accomplished talent. A steel sculpture\, “Queen Coils\,” by the artist’s brother\, sculptor/welder Jay Bradley Pilcher\, is featured in Homing Instinct\, as a thematic symbol of the creative spirit of human change and nature. “Queen Coils” will be on display in the exhibition.
