SUMMARY:From Door to Door
DESCRIPTION:“Last fall\, I started a new series of paintings using Jewish themes and imagery. While I painted\, it occurred to me that I had overlooked my heritage and culture for so long within my own art making. \n  \n‘From Door to Door’ is an anglicization of the Hebrew phrase ‘L’dor V’dor’ which means ‘From Generation to Generation\,’ emphasizing my latest body of work’s mission to bridge generations and reimagine a world where these characters endure and flourish. \n  \nWitnessing the recent surge in global antisemitism has inspired me to delve into the work of Jewish artists for solace. My research quickly revealed the ‘Degenerate Art’ exhibition held in 1937 Munich\, in which all Jewish artists were officially deemed as ‘degenerate’ and the concurrent ‘Great German Art’ exhibition\, which prided itself on its ‘Aryan\, Jew-free purity.’  In a move that has characterized my art-making\, I took from these Nazi artists\, so I could retell and remake their stories using Jewish voices. Chagall\, Modigliani\, Katz\, and Guston are among the Jewish artists I looked to for this collaborative effort. ” \n  \n-Allison Zuckerman \n  \n  \nAllison Zuckerman\, born in 1990 and currently based in Brooklyn\, holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was the 2017 artist-in-residence at the Rubell Museum in Miami. Zuckerman has shown in Israel\, Dubai\, Brussels\, France\, Hong Kong\, and the UK. Her work is currently on view in a solo show at the Rubell Museum in Washington DC and Arsenal Contemporary in Montreal. She was recently included in exhibitions at the Lehman College\, the Museu Inimá de Paula in Brazil\, as well as a solo exhibition in Berlin. Her current curatorial project “Kaleidoscopic Companions” is on view at Library Street Collective in Detroit. Zuckerman is working on a forthcoming project at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid.

SUMMARY:Like Mosquitos to Skin
DESCRIPTION:Erin LeAnn Mitchell‘s debut solo exhibition\, Like Mosquitos to Skin\, will open at Kravets Wehby Gallery on Friday\, September 8th 6-8PM. Made with materials that Erin gathered in textile markets and fabric stores from Alabama to Johannesburg to Harlem\, this show represents her most complex and largest works to date. The quilts in Like Mosquitos to Skin summon the warrior queen Calafia and the Earth-mother Alkebulan—as if illustrating an unwritten Zora Neale Hurston book on the transformative power of Black legends. Her multidimensional assemblages render the realities of southern Blackness into radical new imaginings. \nErin LeAnn Mitchell is from Birmingham\, AL\, and honors southern matriarchal culture through her practice. She is in the current generation of the deep quilting tradition\, using a mixture of textiles\, paint\, and collage. She has recently completed residencies at the Still Art Residency inJohannesburg\, South Africa\, and at La Napoule Art Foundation in Mandelieu-La Napoule\, France. Her work is in the collections of the Birmingham Museum of Fine Art\, and the Paul R. Jones Collection of American Art at the University of Alabama.
