SUMMARY:Virtual Studio Tour | Rodney Graham
DESCRIPTION:Join Rodney Graham in the studio as he discusses a new body of work for Lisson Gallery\, the so-called ‘Painting Problems’\, collaged and derived from previous series and painterly personas created by the artist. These works will form the first of the gallery’s Online Exhibitions (6 – 20 May) and inaugurate this new selling platform\, as well as being available through the Frieze Art Fair viewing room (6 – 15 May).\nImage:\nRodney Graham\nVacuuming the Gallery\, 1949\n2018\nFour painted aluminum lightboxes with transmounted chromogenic transparencies 303.8 x 181.9 x 17.8 cm (each panel) 119 1/2 x 71 1/2 x 7 in (each panel) \n\nGraham continues to inhabit the figure of a modernist painter\, drawing on the vocabulary of 20th century art. Here\, he further expands on the themes from the works presented in Vacuuming the Gallery\, but splices together different styles\, from Braque and Picasso\, to Rodchenko and Fontana. Previous and recent painting series by Graham are also referenced\, such as Possible Abstractions\, based on a 1950s cartoon from a men’s magazine lampooning modern art; the Psychomania Variations\, variants on a prop modernist painting in one of the sets of a 1970s British biker movie; the Inverted Drip Paintings that evolved from The Gifted Amateur lightbox\, picturing an amateur painter inspired by a Morris Louis exhibition in 1962; and a series of recent polka dot relief paintings. Sampling aspects and fragments of these paintings\, Graham has created a new style\, with various new modernist compositions.

DESCRIPTION:This week’s Spotlight Screening from Lisson Gallery features a new\, previously unseen work by Laure Prouvost. Entitled Taking Care (Love Letter to Fellow Art Work)\, her intent was to play this work on a monitor\, positioned directly in front of another sculpture or work of art that the artist would then remotely caress\, fondle and whisper sweet nothings towards. However\, without a physical gallery to place this film\, the piece becomes an online lament for the disappearance of the direct experience of art objects in space\, as well as for the human contact we all crave in isolation. \nImage: Caption: Still frame from Laure Prouvost\, Taking Care (Love Letter to Fellow Art Work)\, 2019\, video\, 3 min 23 sec \n\nThe first six-week season of Screenings\, so far featuring works by Susan Hiller and Cory Arcangel\, presents films based on themes of ‘Excess/access/absence’ – about feast and famine\, about glut versus lack and about connections made and broken. It features films about our digital oversharing\, our over-investment in the deities of commerce\, our negligent treatment of the environment and about what we have lost in terms of language and culture.\n\nProuvost’s Taking Care (Love Letter to Fellow Art Work) is available to watch until Monday 27 April.
