SUMMARY:Sound & Color
DESCRIPTION:NEW YORK – MILES McENER Y GALLERY is pleased to announce the group exhibition Sound & Color that will open on 19 November at 511 West 22nd Street and remain on view through 19 December 2020. The show is curated by Brian Alfred and accompanied by a digital publication featuring an introduction by Alfred. \nIn his renowned podcast “Sound & Vision\,” Alfred speaks to various artists and musicians about their creative process. He has found that music often plays a major role in the lives of artists\, whether they are active performers or avid listeners. “I have often said that music is an incredible parallel axis to art making in describing and understanding the creative process. They both have their idiosyncrasies\, but they share much in the process\,” he comments. \nFor Sound & Color\, Alfred has brought together artists who\, in diverse ways\, represent sound on the visual plane. The exhibition is an exploration of the ways in which artists grapple with picturing sound and its relationship to images\, and how artists can use the element of sound to heighten the dynamics of an image. \nThe exhibition on display continues the art historical tradition of merging aural and visual creativity. Alfred notes\, “From Manet’s The Guitar Player\, to Mary Cassatt’s The Banjo Lesson\, music has always been an artist’s muse.”

SUMMARY:Really.
DESCRIPTION:NEW YORK – MILES McENERY GALLERY is pleased to announce the group exhibition Really. that will open on 15 October at 511 West 22nd Street and remain on view through 14 November 2020. The exhibition is curated by Inka Essenhigh and Ryan McGinness and is accompanied by a fully illustrated digital publication featuring a text by Kurt McVey. \n\n\n\nReally. refers to realities expressed by artists that are based on a shared reality (that which is real)\, but that has also been filtered through the artist. These new original worlds are Really. \nThe artists included in Really. are interested in work that takes viewers on flights of fancy and contributes new imagery to art history. They are of a generation of primarily New York based artists who embraced what was once called “alternative”—the unpopular\, fringe\, discarded\, and dismissed. They became artists because they believed art to be a personal intellectual pursuit\, regardless of if anyone is looking or liking. Really. means being interested in expanding the brain instead of the brand. \nFor Essenhigh and McGinness\, Really. is also a way\, linguistically\, to assert and reinforce sincerity\, as in\, “Thank you. Really.” And\, Really. is also “really?!”\, in response to much of what is in the landscape of contemporary art today.
