SUMMARY:Reading between the Brushstrokes: Imagery and Meaning in Italian Renaissance Painting
DESCRIPTION:While famous masterpieces such as the “Mona Lisa\,” the “Birth of Venus\,” and the “Sistine Chapel\, Ceiling” draw massive crowds in Italy\, most Italian Renaissance paintings in US museums are passed over for more readable\, recognizable\, and user-friendly 19th and/or 20th-century paintings. Museum-goers today often have a difficult time recognizing the characters\, knowing the theology\, identifying with the morality\, or understanding the function of most Italian Renaissance paintings. Dr. Rocky Ruggiero will “read between the brushstrokes” to explain the meaning behind the imagery of painted masterpieces from the Italian Renaissance. \nAdmission is free for members\, $16 per class for non-members. Space is limited. Preregistration Required. \nRocky Ruggiero has been a professor of Art and Architectural History since 1999. He received his BA from the College of the Holy Cross and a Master of Arts degree from Syracuse University\, where he was awarded a prestigious Florence Fellowship in 1996. He furthered his art historical studies at the University of Exeter\, UK\, where he received a Ph.D. in Art History and Visual Culture. \nIn addition to lecturing for various American universities in Florence\, Italy\, including Syracuse\, Kent State\, Vanderbilt\, and Boston College\, Rocky has starred in various TV documentaries concerning the Italian Renaissance. He recently appeared as an expert witness for NBC News\, as well as in the History Channel’s “Engineering an Empire: Da Vinci’s World” and “Museum Secrets: the Uffizi Gallery”\, and the recent NatGeo/NOVA PBS program on Brunelleschi’s dome entitled “Great Cathedral Mystery.” \nAfter living in Florence\, Italy\, for 20 years\, Rocky and his family moved to East Greenwich\, RI\, and he now divides his time between the US and Italy. \nRocky also shares his knowledge and love of Italian art as an academic advisory board member of the non-profit group Friends of Florence and as a frequent collaborator and lecturer for the Friends of the Uffizi Gallery\, both of which have provided funds for the restoration of numerous works of art throughout Florence. He also lectures and serves as a college liaison for the prestigious Jay Pritzker Academy in Siem Reap\, Cambodia. \nIf you or someone you know needs help registering\, please call 954-262-0204 or email museumeducation@nova.edu

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Robert Rauschenberg: Real Time
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 15\, 2025\nMembers Opening: 5:30 – 7:30 pm\nDance performance/Damaris Ferrer: 6:30 pm\nFREE for Members | $25 non-members \nRobert Rauschenberg: Real Time is part of the centennial celebration of the artist. Hosted in South Florida\, the state Rauschenberg called home from 1970 until his death in 2008\, the exhibition is funded by the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation as part of a global museum initiative. \nKnown as an enfant terrible who radically eroded the boundaries between art and life\, Robert Rauschenberg experimented with new technologies\, collaborated with contemporary dancers and composers\, and breathed new life into printmaking. The exhibition features 27 experimental works from the NSU Art Museum collection\, Charles Atlas’s films of Rauschenberg’s collaborations with choreographer Merce Cunningham\, and rare early photographs by Rauschenberg on loan from the Fredrick R. Weisman Art Foundation. \nAs part of the opening celebration\, choreographer Damaris Ferrer will activate her work The Crossings\, a collaborative action that sets into motion the simple act of connecting to self and others. \nDamaris Ferrer is a multi-disciplinary artist\, mover\, teacher\, and choreographer whose movement language was formed through the technical foundations of classical ballet\, Graham technique\, classical Spanish Dance\, Limon technique\, Flamenco\, and world folk dances. In 2019\, she began teaching for the dance program at Nova Southeastern University\, and she has just been awarded an Artist Support grant from Broward County for her new work\, which will premiere in September 2026. \nRobert Rauschenberg’s strong conviction that engagement with art can nurture people’s sensibilities as individuals\, community members\, and citizens was key to his ethos. The centennial celebrations seek to allow audiences familiar with him and those encountering the artist for the first time to form fresh perspectives about his art-work. \nA year of global activities and exhibitions reexamines the artist through a contemporary lens\, highlighting his enduring influence on generations of artists and advocates for social progress. The centennial’s activation of the artist’s legacy promotes cross-disciplinary explorations and creates opportunities for critical dialogue.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Jacqueline de Jong\, Rose B. Simpson and vanessa german\, and Cici McMonigle
DESCRIPTION:Jacqueline de Jong: Vicious Circles\nVicious Circles will be the first exhibition in the United States dedicated to artist Jacqueline de Jong (b.1939\, Hengelo\, Netherlands\, d. 2024\, Amsterdam\, Netherlands). The exhibition will consider the perpetual theme of war and protest within the artist’s oeuvre; whether in paintings dedicated to the rebellious spirit of rock ‘n’ roll\, or haunting portrayals of the ongoing war in Ukraine\, De Jong remained focused on the present\, reacting to the now. \nRose B. Simpson and vanessa german: IT INCLUDES EVERYONE\, EVERYWHERE\, ALWAYS\nThis exhibition presents a visual conversation between two leading emerging artists who have profoundly influenced one another. Rose B. Simpson (b. 1983\, Kha’p’oe Ówîngeh / Santa Clara Pueblo\, NM; lives and works in Kha’p’oe Ówîngeh / Santa Clara Pueblo\, NM) is a Native artist descended from a long matrilineage of Tewa tribe artists. Her work integrates ancestral Pueblo pottery traditions with metalwork\, automotive design\, performance\, installation\, music and creative writing. vanessa german (b.1976\, Milwaukee\, WI; lives and works in Asheville\, NC) is a self-taught citizen and LGBTQIA+ artist and activist\, working across sculpture\, communal ritual\, and immersive installation. \nCici McMonigle: Creatures for the Divine\nNSU Art Museum presents the first solo museum exhibition of Miami artist Cici McMonigle (b. 2001\, Tianjin\, China). This exhibition showcases McMonigle’s exuberant and colorful paintings of fabulous beasts and monstrous creatures derived from Chinese and American western fables and tales\, and a new series of painted wood cutouts inspired by traditional Chinese folk toys\, which symbolize peace and prosperity. \nThank you Wayne and Lucretia Weiner for sponsoring the opening reception. \nImage: Jacqueline de Jong\, Moria (08.09.20) (Border Line)\, 2021. SUMMARY:The Annual Stanley and Pearl Goodman Lecture on Latin American Art
DESCRIPTION:Joaquin Torres-Garcia and Universal Constructivism\, Presented by Cecilia de Torres \nSpanish-Uruguayan artist\, theorist and art educator Joaquin Torres-García (1874-1949) is renowned for his trademark abstract style of Universal Constructivism based on grid structure and symbolic motifs. After being active in Europe for years\, he returned to his native Montevideo\, Uruguay in 1934\, where he established the Taller Torres-Garcia\, an art workshop that proposed a new constructivist art centered on geometry with roots in ancient American arts and architecture. De Torres and his followers’ paintings are well represented in the Stanley and Pearl Goodman Collection of Latin American Art\, which is a generous bequest to the Museum. The lecture coincides with the exhibition: Selections from the Stanley and Pearl Goodman Collection of Latin American Art\, from September 21 to October 20. \nCecilia de Torres is internationally recognized as the leading authority on the work of Joaquín Torres-García and the artists associated with his Workshop\, The Taller Torres-García (TTG). Ms. de Torres established her gallery in New York in 1993\, after co-curating the exhibition El Taller Torres-García: The School of the South and Its Legacy (1991-1993)\, with Mari Carmen Ramírez. The exhibition was inaugurated at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and was accompanied by an exhibition catalogue. \nThroughout the years\, the Cecilia de Torres\, Ltd.’s exhibitions have aimed to bring about a new appreciation and understanding of Latin American modern and contemporary art. This pertains\, most specifically\, to the movements of Constructivism and Geometric Abstraction\, and spans across media that includes painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, kinetic art\, and ceramics. \nMs. de Torres has also curated and contributed to numerous museum exhibitions\, writes extensively on Torres-García and the artists of the TTG\, and is regularly consulted by museums and auction houses regarding this work. In May 2015\, following forty years of research\, Cecilia de Torres published the online catalogue raisonné of Joaquín Torres-García\, available to the public at www.torresgarcia.com. \nThe Annual Stanley and Pearl Goodman Lecture in Latin American Art is named in recognition of the couples’ generous promised gift to NSU Art Museum of over 90 works by Latin American artists. \nImage: Joaquin Torres-Garcia\, Gare II (Railway Station II)\, 1931. SUMMARY:Creativity Exploration: Home is Where the Heart Is
DESCRIPTION:Gather inspiration from a variety of artists like Louise Bourgeois\, Do Ho Suh\, Erin Fostel\, Frank Poor\, Tracey Snelling and others that explore the theme of “home” in their work. Create your own mixed media work that represents what “home” means to you. \nCreativity Exploration adult workshops promote the benefits of material exploration and the mind-to-body experience. Studies have shown that 45 minutes of creative activity a day reduces stress and offers mental clarity and relaxation. In addition to producing a sense of well-being\, sessions expand participants’ perceptions of forms\, while increasing brain connectivity through visual and cognitive stimulation. The workshop is led by educator Lark Keeler\, a specialist in mindfulness education. \nPreregistration Required. Space is Limited. \nCreativity Exploration is sponsored by the Charles P. Ferro Foundation.
