SUMMARY:Ebb & Flow: The Many Faces of Water
DESCRIPTION:“Ebb & Flow: The Many Faces of Water” is artist Heather Stivison’s third New York City solo show. In this series of oil and acrylic paintings\, Stivison does not “illustrate” water as in plein air paintings or photographs. Instead\, she paints to capture the essence of water—something clear and colorless\, with its shape formed entirely by the external forces of objects\, land\, wind\, gravity. Searching for water’s most primary qualities\, she uses light\, color\, form\, shape\, line\, to engender a sense of water. Fluidity\, reflections\, rhythms are evident in her ocean surface paintings. Stivison is fascinated by the reflections and patterns created by the coastal ocean surface. She paints variations on patterns\, exploring how much she can change them and still maintain the sense that the subject is surface water. \nIn addition to surface water\, the exhibition includes larger paintings\, some a full five-feet-wide\, that explore the sense of weightlessness and mystery that she finds in the imagining unknown ocean depths. \nA special feature of this exhibition is an on-demand sound installation of original jazz music composed and performed by scientist Noah Germolus\, during his time researching ocean chemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. Germolus and Stivison took part in a multi-year collaboration where she interpreted his data in paint. He in turn\, interpreted four of her paintings in music.

SUMMARY:Heather Stivison-Ebb & Flow: The Many Faces of Water
DESCRIPTION:In her third New York City solo exhibition\, Heather Stivison explores the intersection of environmental science and visual art in immersive paintings of the ocean. Her latest exhibition\, Ebb & Flow: The Many Faces of Water opens on September 2 at Pleiades Gallery\, 547 West 27th Street\, Suite 304. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday\, 12-6 p.m. \n  \nSome of the paintings on view are the result of Stivison’s multi-year\, grant funded collaboration with Noah Germolus\, a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute who was researching ocean chemistry. This collaboration led to a unique special feature of this exhibition. After Stivison interpreted his data in paint\, he in turn\, interpreted four of her paintings in music. The exhibition includes a play-on-demand sound installation of original jazz music composed and performed by Germolus. \n  \nCurator Renee Phillips writes\, “Stivison ventures beyond nature’s physical boundaries into abstraction with the profusion of free-flowing biomorphic patterns and tonal ranges. In her paintings the innate attributes of water evolve into metaphors\, symbolism and visual poetry.” \n  \nThe exhibition features a sampling of the many ways Stivison’s oil and acrylic paintings capture the essence of water. Searching for water’s most primary qualities\, she uses light\, color\, form\, shape\, line\, to engender a sense of water. Stivison is fascinated by the reflections and patterns created by the coastal ocean surface. She paints variations on patterns\, exploring how much she can change them and still maintain the sense that the subject is surface water. Other paintings explore chemical mysteries within specific ocean zones of exploration. A massive 110-inch quadriptych offers a sense of weightlessness and mystery that she finds in the unknown ocean depths. \n  \nIndependent curator Kathy Imlay writes\, “Stivison’s paintings have a luminous glow—accomplished by the artist building up layer upon layer of viscous paint\, which she pours\, smears\, scrapes and otherwise manipulates to create fields of color that conjure the watery depths of the ocean or intergalactic space\, depending on the palette.” \n  \nHeather Stivison is an award-winning artist who has exhibited from coast to coast in the United States and in juried shows in Asia and Europe. SUMMARY:“Mandala”\, a solo show by Carol Nussbaum
DESCRIPTION:Carol Nussbaum’s Mandala artwork comprises a variety of photographic subjects\, ranging from children’s toys to paper goods\, woven and repeated into a “mandala” or circle. Found in every culture and faith\, a mandala is structured around a unifying center and represents both wholeness and the universe. Mandalas can be found in the circles of the sun\, earth and moon but also in our circles of family and friendships. Carol notes\, “Weaving elements of my travel photographs or even a trip to a farm stand into a mandala\, brings a new mood or movement to the experience.” While typically used as a meditation aid\, mandalas can also serve to center living and working spaces. Following a successful and award winning career in advertising\, Carol Nussbaum joyfully exhibits her photographic mandalas in galleries and private collections. \nMandala will run from March 19 – April 13\, with an opening reception on March 23 from 3-6 pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Emily Koch: To Be Made Whole
DESCRIPTION:“To be made whole”\, a solo show by Emily Koch.\n\n\nKoch’s previous works have focussed on the female form\, creating multi-dimensional playgrounds that are unbound by the female canon of ‘otherness’. \n“To be made whole” breaks out of the feminine lens with a broadened approach to the subjective//objective experience. Assessing literature & visual systems from antiquity to today\, Koch explores the relational nature of ‘being’\, the never-ending dance between the self and the other: Whatever ‘it’ is that exists apart from ourselves creates us\, but we also take part in creating whatever ‘it’ is. In this solo exhibition\, Koch’s visual worlds play with dimensionality\, using mirrors\, shadows\, form and abstraction\, to express the creative process that is ‘being’. \n\n\n\nTo be made whole by seeing and being seen.

SUMMARY:Joyce Weidenaar\, Color Burst
DESCRIPTION:Pleiades Gallery presents “Color Burst”\, an exhibit of Joyce Weidenaar’s paintings and prints. The show runs from June 13 through July 8. The Artist Reception will take place on Saturday\, June 17 from 3-6 pm. On Saturday\, July 8 from 3-6 pm there will be ballroom dancing in the gallery. \nWeidenaar’s paintings typically depict everyday subjects that often go largely unnoticed. It is the focus on those objects\, front and center\, which heightens the viewer’s awareness and appreciation. Their shapes are inherently interesting and the works are often brightly colored. Recent subjects include calla lilies\, a display of fans\, and the window of a cowboy hat store. Close up\, or with unusual perspective\, these paintings take on abstract qualities as well. While the objects in Weidenaar’s paintings are realistically rendered\, her monoprints are abstract and emphasize rich textures. \nPleiades Gallery is located at 547 West 27th Street\, Suite 304. Opening hours are Tuesday – Saturday\, 12-6 pm.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Heather Stivison: Seeds of Change"
DESCRIPTION:The opening reception for Heather Stivison: Seeds of Change features the live acoustic jazz guitar of John Stein. \nJohn is a highly accomplished guitarist and retired member of the faculty at Berklee College of Music. He has many albums to his credit as both a leader and sideman with some of the world’s most renowned jazz acts. John has published several books on composition\, a book of solo guitar arrangements published by Berklee College\, and numerous articles for jazz magazines. \nJohn will be joined by wonderful bass guitarist Ed Lucie\, his partner on the 2021 recording ‘Serendipity.’ Their skill\, emotional expressiveness\, and fluency as a duet are affecting and memorable\, and echo the sentiments of the paintings on view. \nHeather Stivison\, an artist committed to exploring the intersection of environmental science and visual art in her immersive paintings of the ocean\, air\, and sky will debut a series of works that Stivison calls Ecoscapes\, in the exhibition. \nSeeds of Change\, with its references to natural cycles of growth\, renewal\, and hope arrives fittingly at the beginning of spring after a winter of extreme weather conditions. The exhibition is comprised of 25 acrylic on canvas paintings including a fifteen-foot wide installation of four large panels. Stivison’s Ecoscape paintings depict natural objects and symbols seemingly floating\, untethered in the wind or in deep and shallow bodies of water. Seed pods\, stones\, plankton\, strands of DNA and nautical charts commingle. Stivison says she is inspired by her reading\, observation\, and interest in petroglyphs and ancient rock carvings and paintings.

SUMMARY:Heather Stivison: Seeds of Change
DESCRIPTION:Heather Stivison\, an artist committed to exploring the intersection of environmental science and visual art in her immersive paintings of the ocean\, air\, and sky will debut a series of works that Stivison calls “Ecoscapes.” \nSeeds of Change\, with its references to natural cycles of growth\, renewal\, and hope arrives fittingly at the beginning of spring after a winter of extreme weather conditions. Seed pods\, stones\, plankton\, strands of DNA and nautical charts commingle. Stivison says she is inspired by her reading\, observation\, and interest in petroglyphs and ancient rock carvings and paintings. “Like most of us\, I have been deeply concerned about climate change. Reading ‘The Human Age’ by Jane Ackerman I began feeling less hopeless… about the varied possibilities for the future of the planet.” \nStivison said\, “I am experimenting with ideas of depth on the canvas. Most of the works are devoid of classic horizon lines and avoid using Eurocentric perspective with vanishing points. In the smaller works\, shapes and symbols merely float on the surface.” \nArt critic Don Wilkinson said of Stivison\, writing in The New Bedford Standard-Times\, “Much of her imagery\, although clearly rooted in reality\, flirts with the abstract. It is that nexxus between the two poles where she is most comfortable as an artist. In the space of visual disruption\, she opens herself up to the possibility of different narratives than simple observation might deliver.” \nStivison is known for her interpretations of ocean science research in collaboration with a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and has recently lectured on her work and that topic at the University of Connecticut. She has exhibited throughout the United States and in national and international juried and invitational exhibitions. This is her first New York solo exhibition.

SUMMARY:Heather Stivison\, “Ebb & Flow”\, a Solo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In this her third New York City solo exhibition\, Heather Stivison explores the intersection of environmental science and visual art with a series of immersive paintings of the ocean. \nStivison paintings capture the essence of water—something clear and colorless\, with its shape formed entirely by the external forces of objects\, land\, wind\, gravity. \nCurator and director of Manhattan Arts International Renee Phillips writes: \n“Stivison ventures beyond nature’s physical boundaries into abstraction with the profusion of free-flowing biomorphic patterns and tonal ranges. In her paintings the innate attributes of water evolve into metaphors\, symbolism and visual poetry.” \nThe exhibition includes a massive 110-inch quadriptych that explores the sense of weightlessness and mystery that she finds in the imagining unknown ocean depths. Other paintings explore surface water patterns as abstract design. \nIndependent curator Kathy Imlay writes: \n“Stivison’s paintings have a luminous glow—accomplished by the artist building up layer upon layer of viscous paint\, which she pours\, smears\, scrapes and otherwise manipulates to create fields of color that conjure the watery depths of the ocean or intergalactic space\, depending on the palette.” \nSome of the paintings on view are the result of her multi-year\, grant funded collaboration with Noah Germolus\, a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute who was researching ocean chemistry. Stivison created two paintings about him and his work\, and four five-foot paintings that interpret his research data in paint. \nThe collaboration led to a unique special feature of this exhibition. After Stivison interpreted his data in paint\, he in turn\, interpreted four of her paintings in music. The exhibition includes an on-demand sound installation of original jazz music composed and performed by Germolus.
