SUMMARY:Conversation: The Illustrious Career of Adger Cowans
DESCRIPTION:Deborah Willis\, PhD joins photographer Adger Cowans to discuss the artist’s work\, in a conversation moderated by Halima Taha\, curator of Adger Cowans: Sense and Sensibility. The conversation will be followed by a reception with light refreshments at 6 p.m.. \nWe invite you to join the conversation via the following options: \n\nIn-person in the Kelley Theater inside the Quick Center for the Arts\nStreaming via thequicklive.com\n\nAbout the exhibition: Adger Cowans (American\, b. 1936) is a celebrated photographer whose wide-ranging work includes the civil rights movement\, jazz musicians\, landscape\, and artistic studies of the human form\, water\, and light. He is also one of the founding members of Kamoinge\, a Black photographers collective whose mission is to ‘Honor\, document\, preserve and represent the history and culture of the African Diaspora with integrity and respect for humanity through the lens of Black Photographers.’ This exhibition\, curated by Halima Taha\, presents Cowans’s use of photography to articulate the beauty within the human condition and the world we live in with over fifty images from his illustrious career. Integral to Cowan’s work is his conscious effort to remain “close to the natural movement of the universe through the vibrancy of life. I take a picture with my heart\, not my eyes. The eyes see what the heart feels.” \nhttps://www.fairfield.edu/museum/adgercowans/

SUMMARY:Lecture: Collecting Black Art
DESCRIPTION:Halima Taha\, Curator of Adger Cowans: Sense and Sensibility\, will present a lecture on collecting Black art\, in conjunction with the exhibition currently on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries\, Adger Cowans: Sense and Sensibility. \nWe invite you to join the conversation via the following options: \n\nIn person in the Kelley Theater in the Quick Center for the Arts\nStreaming via thequicklive.com\n\nHalima Taha\, guest curator of Adger Cowans: Sense and Sensibility\, is recognized as an art professional who has contributed to the field as a curator\, appraiser\, art advisor\, educator\, and speaker for more than twenty years. She is best known for her groundbreaking bestseller\, Collecting African American Art: Works on Paper and Canvas\, the first book to validate collecting fine art\, printmaking\, and photography by Americans of African descent as viable assets and commodities within the marketplace. It was also used as a choice PBS membership incentive\, raising three times its fundraising goal. Since its release\, this title provided solid market criteria for publishers to print more artist monographs and African American art collection books\, independent from museum shows within the first two decades of the 21st century.  In addition\, her expertise provided the foundation\, in conjunction with the National Black Fine Art Show (1997-2009)\, for cultivating and educating a global audience that enabled Swann Galleries to successfully establish the first international African American auction category in 2008. Her work was also the catalyst for ushering major museums to actively pursue collections of African American Art for exhibition and acquisition\, within the first two decades of this century. She is an arts advocate committed to nurturing the development\, documentation\, and acquisition of Black visual culture as a professional speaker and arts writer. \nhttps://www.fairfield.edu/museum/adgercowans/

SUMMARY:Lecture: Reconsidering the Landscape in Chinese Contemporary Art Practices
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Yun Mapplethorpe\, Director at the Asia Society Museum in New York City\, presents a lecture on Chinese contemporary art. \nMichelle Yun Mapplethorpe\, Director at the Asia Society Museum in New York City\, will present a lecture entitled “Reconsidering the Landscape in Chinese Contemporary Art Practices\,” inspired by the two exhibitions of Chinese contemporary art on view in the Walsh Gallery: ink/stone and SEEING IS BELIEVING: Crossings and Transpositions\, Part II (January 21-March 5\, 2022). \nYun Mapplethorpe’s lecture is part of the Edwin L. Weisl\, Jr. Lectureships in Art History\, funded by the Robert Lehman Foundation. \nWe invite you to join the conversation via the following options: \n\nIn person in the Kelley Theater\, located in the Quick Center for the Arts\n\n\nStreaming via thequicklive.com\n\nPlease note: \n\nFor all Spring 2022 in-person events\, all adult visitors and staff are required to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination and a valid ID.\n\n\nChildren under 12 are not currently required to be vaccinated to participate in any programs.\n\n\nProof of a negative Covid-19 test will not be accepted as an alternative to vaccination.\n\n\nA face mask or covering is required for all guests during indoor events\, except in designated locations.\n\nAbout SEEING IS BELIEVING: CROSSINGS AND TRANSPOSITIONS\, PART II: This exhibition\, organized by Professor of Studio Art Jo Yarrington\, features work by five contemporary Chinese artists: He Jiancheng\, Xiao Yao Ning\, Luo Biwu\, Zuo Zeng Yao and Zhang Zeng Min. Yarrington traveled to China in 2019 with four other American artists\, where they presented Part I of this international exchange. \nAbout ink/stone: This exhibition presents works by Chinese artists from the 20th and 21st centuries who engage with ink and stone as materials\, subjects\, and concepts. Employing a range of techniques and media\, the artists make diverse points of contact with older Chinese artistic traditions. Some embrace the emphasis on ink brush strokes on paper or silk to render mountainous landscapes or rock forms; others incorporate media and styles usually associated with western painting: oil on canvas\, or gouache and watercolor. Yet others use photography\, industrial processes of fabrication\, or create conceptual and performance art. The contemporary works are shown together with older stone objects such as Buddhist steles\, a scholar’s rock\, and inkstones\, which provide historical touchpoints for the artists’ reinterpretations of these forms and media. The exhibition is curated by Ive Covaci\, PhD\, Adjunct Professor of Art History at Fairfield University. \n  \nImage: An Ho 安和(Chinese b. 1924)\, Coming Ashore\, ca. late 20thcentury\, album leaf\, ink and color on silk. The exhibition is curated by Ive Covaci\, PhD\, Adjunct Professor of Art History at Fairfield University. \nBoth exhibitions will be on view in the Walsh Gallery in the Quick Center for the Arts from January 21-March 5\, 2022! \n  \nImage: Huang Yan 黃岩 (Chinese\, b. 1966)\, Chinese Shan-Shui Tattoo\, 1999\, photograph\, C-print. SUMMARY:Lecture: The Art of Perception: Look Closely to Save a Life
DESCRIPTION:Join the Fairfield University Art Museum for a creative workshop! \nPlease note: this event will be presented on Fairfield University’s campus\, and will not be live-streamed. University policies related to campus access will apply. Updates can be found here: https://www.fairfield.edu/undergraduate/student-life-and-services/health-and-wellness/health-center/emergencies/coronavirus/ \nPlease visit the Eventbrite page to select tickets before coming to campus. \nJoin us for this special event co-sponsored by the #UNLOAD Foundation. Amy Herman\, founder of The Art of Perception Ⓡ\, will lead a brief workshop on identifying and understanding visual bias\, followed by a panel discussion with community members. \nPresented in conjunction with the exhibition Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects (Walsh Gallery). About the exhibition: In Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects\, Weems focuses on the humanity denied in recent killings of black men\, women\, and children by police. She directs our attention to the constructed nature of racial identity—specifically\, representations that associate black bodies with criminality. Our imaginings have real—often deadly—outcomes. Blocks of color obscure faces just as our assumptions around race obscure individual humanity. Through a formal language of blurred images\, color blocks\, stated facts\, and meditative narration\, Weems directs our attention toward the repeated pattern of judicial inaction—the repeated denials and the repeated lack of acknowledgement. \nThis exhibition is organized by LSU Museum of Art in collaboration with LSU College of Art + Design\, and LSU School of Art. At the Fairfield University Art Museum\, this exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the #UNLOAD Foundation. The Mary and Eliza Freeman Center for History and Community is a community partner for the museum’s programming this fall. Learn more about the exhibition here.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Conserving the Artifacts at the 9/11 Museum and Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion about the conservation of artifacts at the 9/11 Museum and Memorial. \nPlease note: this event will be presented on Fairfield University’s campus\, and will not be live-streamed. SUMMARY:Six Cuban Artists Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, January 23rd from 6 – 7:30 p.m. for an opening reception to celebrate the opening of Archives of the Consciousness: Six Cuban Artists\, which will be on view in the Walsh Gallery\, located in the Quick Center for the Arts\, from January 24 – May 15\, 2020. Refreshments will be provided\, accompanied by live music. The reception is both free and open to the public. Register on our Eventbrite. \nTo register for the opening lecture at 5 p.m. please click here. \nFeaturing recent and key past works by internationally renowned artists\, this exhibition explores the many mythologies of liberation and fulfillment promised by modern life as well as the peculiar challenges they represent for island Cubans who must navigate Cuba’s contradictory system of combining capitalism with Communist rule since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Through sculpture\, painting\, photography and mixed media\, artists Abel Barroso\, Luis Camejo\, Roberto Diago\, Manuel Mendive\, Mabel Poblet and Eduardo (“Choco”) Roca interrogate the ways that consumerism\, migration\, patriarchy and the legacies of slavery shape the definitions and differential experiences of freedom that twenty-first-century technology affords all of us. Yet these works anchor the viewer in deeply Cuban locations of consciousness\, revealing how austerity and sacrifice\, self-reliance and dependence\, fear and valor\, joy and anguish reflect central principles of survival in a society where egalitarian dreams have long clashed with scarcity\, poverty and painful political realities. \nTo learn more\, click here. \nImage: Mabel Poblet Pujol\, Reflejada (Reflected)\, 2015. SUMMARY:Exhibition Tour: RODIN: TRUTH\, FORM\, LIFE
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition tour of RODIN: TRUTH\, FORM\, LIFE will take place on Saturday\, December 14th\, at 12:00 p.m. in the museum’s Walsh Gallery with the Curator of Education\, Michelle DiMarzo. The exhibition will be available for view from September 13 – December 21\, 2019. \nBy the early 20th century\, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was widely regarded as the greatest European sculptor since Michelangelo. Rejecting 19th-century academic traditions that dictated what was “proper” in art\, Rodin pursued his own deeply held belief that art should be true to nature. Working in clay\, wax\, plaster\, marble\, and bronze with vigorous modeling that emphasized his personal response to his subjects\, Rodin explored new ways to express the vitality of the human spirit. He was also one of the first sculptors to embrace the fragment as a complete work of art\, capable of conveying the same expressive qualities as a fully-finished figure. With his commitment to the free exploration of form and emotion\, Rodin’s work paved the way for the development of 20th-century modernist sculpture. \nThis special exhibition\, organized and made possible by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation\, presents 22 of Rodin’s bronze sculptures\, which were modeled between 1860 and 1910. The works on view include preparatory studies for some of Rodin’s most important public commissions\, such as The Burghers of Calais and The Gates of Hell\, as well as portraits of French authors Victor Hugo and Honoré de Balzac. \nImage: Saint John the Baptist Preaching\, modeled ca. 1880\, cast 1925\, Alexis Rudier Foundry (published by Musée Rodin in an edition of unknown size)\, Bronze

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Sculpting in Bronze
DESCRIPTION:Marc Mellon will present a gallery talk titled Sculpting in Bronze\, which is presented in conjunction with the exhibition RODIN: TRUTH\, FORM\, LIFE. The gallery talk is on Thursday\, November 14th at 6 p.m. in the museum’s Walsh Gallery. \n  \nRODIN: TRUTH\, FORM\, LIFE Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections will be on view in the Walsh Gallery from September 13 – December 21\, 2019. \n  \nBy the early 20th century\, Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) was widely regarded as the greatest European sculptor since Michelangelo. With his commitment to the free exploration of form and emotion\, Rodin’s work paved the way for the development of 20th century modernist sculpture. \nImage: Despairing Adolescent\, modeled 1882\, cast 1975\, Godard Foundry (published by Musée Rodin\, edition of 12\, numbered 3/12)\, Bronze
