SUMMARY:Jacob Lawrence and the Legend of John Brown
DESCRIPTION:Jacob Lawrence and the Legend of John Brown presents a recently acquired portfolio of prints by the acclaimed Black modernist Jacob Lawrence (1917–2000). Lawrence originally produced The Legend of John Brown as paintings in 1941\, but\, due to problems related to the stability of the gouache used in the series\, in 1974 he collaborated with printers to translate this important body of work to screen prints. Lawrence drew inspiration for the 22 prints in the series from research he conducted at the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture at the New York Public Library\, notably Franklin B. Sanborn’s The Life and Letters of John Brown\, Liberator of Kansas and Martyr of Virginia\, published in 1885. Lawrence’s account of Brown’s life and death includes consideration of his time in Kansas\, where Brown first employed violence in his quest to rid the country of slavery.

SUMMARY:Dissent\, Discontent\, and Action: Pictures of US by Accra Shepp
DESCRIPTION:The Spencer Museum collaborates with contemporary photographer Accra Shepp to share two photographic projects\, Occupying Wall Street and The Covid Journals. Through these portrait series\, Shepp reveals a sense of community\, hope\, and resilience during an era of tremendous social\, political\, and environmental change. \nShepp began photographing the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in New York’s Zuccotti Park on October 1\, 2011. He was drawn to the sea of individuals as a photographic subject\, based in part on his observation of the crowd’s diversity: “The press said the movement was predominantly young and white. And I kept seeing Asians\, Latinos\, Blacks. This doesn’t look so homogenous. There were people in their 60s and young children with their families. And I thought\, this is what people need to see.” Working with a 4 × 5 view camera\, Shepp made 20 to 30 exposures per week over an extended period\, continuing to photograph demonstrators at the park and its vicinity through April 2012. \nIn the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020\, Shepp again captured portraits of the people in his city. He used a medium-format camera to address\, in his words\, “what this pandemic and its shape looks like here in New York. The work also speaks to the responsibility the arts and artists have to make visible\, audible—make present important historical moments and conditions.” The series began at Elmhurst Hospital\, a few blocks from Shepp’s home\, during a moment when this hospital was filling with patients. At that time most Americans were living in isolation and views of labor and loss associated with the virus’s impact weren’t always visible. Later that year\, Shepp’s attention shifted to demonstrations and the outcry for justice after the murders of Ahmaud Arbery\, Breonna Taylor\, and George Floyd. Shepp explains\, “In spite of isolation and hunger and in spite of contagion\, and the pandemic\, people raised their voices to say\, ‘No more.’” \nIn uniting these two bodies of work\, produced almost a decade apart\, we can consider how the same issues that drove protestors to the streets in 2011 grew in relevance to our daily lives during the crisis of a global pandemic\, and continue to shape society today. \nThis exhibition is supported by the KU Student Senate and the Linda Inman Bailey Exhibitions Fund.

SUMMARY:How the Light Gets In
DESCRIPTION:The interactive installation “How the Light Gets In” was created by artist Sarah Newman in collaboration with Hyunjin Seo and the KU Center for Digital Inclusion in the William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications. It shares the experiences of formerly incarcerated women reentering society. \nNewman and Seo collaborated with women in reentry through creative workshops. Text submitted by the women will be printed out and continuously fall to the gallery floor. Visitors are welcome to take these printouts and are also invited to share their answers to questions presented on laptops\, which will send text to the printer’s queue. In this way\, informed by the wisdom of the women in the program as well as of the audience\, this exhibition encourages viewers to approach others with compassion\, curiosity\, and humility.

SUMMARY:Debut
DESCRIPTION:Opening in fall of 2021\, Debut will feature artwork from the Spencer Museum’s collection that has never been exhibited in our building since it opened in 1978. The eclectic artwork assembled is explored through seven broad thematic sections. Debut will remain on view for the duration of Phase II renovation and the complete reinstall of our fourth-floor collection galleries. As we undergo these transformative changes\, Debut presents previously unseen works in conversation with more familiar art from the collection that is frequently used for teaching and research. This exhibition is supported by Friends of the Art Museum\, KU Student Senate\, and the Linda Inman Bailey Exhibitions Fund.

SUMMARY:The Aorta of an Archivist
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Healing\, Knowing\, Seeing the Body\, the Spencer Museum of Art commissioned Houston-based transdisciplinary artist Dario Robleto to create a new work of art: The Aorta of an Archivist. This immersive sound and video installation connects Robleto’s deep and longstanding research on the cosmos\, the human heart\, and the history of recording. The work is framed by the concept of the “unobservable universe\,” an astronomical phenomenon with profound consequences: Because the universe is expanding so quickly\, light from the stars rapidly moving away from Earth will no longer be able to reach even our strongest telescopes. The cosmos has presented us with an observational threshold that seems impermeable. \nThe Aorta of an Archivist reminds us that we have continually crossed boundaries that once seemed impassable\, especially with respect to our bodies. Through complex layering and the deliberate confusion of scale\, the film prompts viewers to question what is known and unknown\, knowable and unknowable—to ask where our observational limits lie. \nOur galleries are open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 1–5PM.

SUMMARY:Healing\, Knowing\, Seeing the Body
DESCRIPTION:The human body has the potential to serve as a universal point of connection. The feats the human body can achieve\, the wonder it can inspire\, and the pain it can endure offer possibilities for uniting us through shared experience. Everyone has a body—one that comes into existence\, changes through time\, and eventually succumbs to death. \nYet\, the body is also individual and intimate\, shaped both by cultural context and personal circumstance. It serves as a site of violence and debate\, providing visible ways to identify and label difference that can lead to widespread\, harmful injustice. \nThis exhibition explores these complexities and contradictions through works of art from the Spencer Museum of Art’s collection\, as well as site-specific commissions and loans from contemporary artists and regional institutions. Together\, these diverse pieces reveal the many ways that artists\, scientists\, healers\, and others have come to understand the body through time and across cultural contexts. \nOur galleries are open Thursday through Sunday from 1–5PM. You can also explore an online version of this exhibition on our website.
