DESCRIPTION:Anna Rotty\, spectrals from a shoreless sea\nNovember 08 – November 19\, 2022\nReception: Friday\, November 11th\, 5-7PM MDT \nStrata Gallery presents a solo exhibition\, spectrals from a shoreless sea\, by New Mexico-based artist Anna Rotty. The exhibition opens November 8th\, with a reception on November 11th from 5 – 7 p.m. The artist will give a brief talk at 6 p.m. \nAnna Rotty’s photographic work explores the relationship between home\, environment and memory. Embracing constant change\, Anna uses photography as a tool to slow down and pay attention to what is both on the surface and buried underneath. By bending photographic prints in cascading forms\, projecting light\, and placing photographs as structures onto the floor\, Anna creates a submersive visual experience. With collected and constructed images of landscape\, this show highlights the healing qualities of water and earth. \nRotty stated\, “I’m thrilled to be part of this wonderful community engaging with artists embracing experimental work here at Strata Gallery. My work is about placing attention on the nearly intangible aspects of experience\, seen and unseen. Process and material are critical to my practice\, and I hope viewers find something unexpected and magical in the work as well.” \nAnna Rotty is pursuing her MFA in photography at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She is originally from Massachusetts and San Francisco and has been accepted into Strata Gallery’s emerging artist cohort. Anna has exhibited at San Francisco Camerawork\, Root Division and Foto Forum Santa Fe. DESCRIPTION:Joomi Chung\, (In)Visible\nOctober 18 – November 05\, 2022\nReception: Tuesday\, October 18th\, 5-7PM MDT \nStrata Gallery presents a solo exhibition\, (In)Visible by Ohio-based artist Joomi Chung. The exhibition opens October 18 with an artist reception from 5-7pm. \n(In)Visible explores subjective experiences of time; simultaneous looking into and through another body; and the intersection between aural and visual experiences. The exhibition includes two experimental animations and a series of small-scale paintings. Transit (7:45) focuses on an experience of moving through time-space as a driver. Inside a Waterdog’s Head (6:54) portrays the world seen and felt by the artist’s dog\, recently diagnosed with a rare type of cancer. While the two time-based works evoke a sensation of passing through a flux of time\, the gouache painting series\, Still Frames\, offers a moment to contemplate the spaces contained in fractions of seconds. \nJoomi Chung is a Korean-American artist based in Oxford\, Ohio where she is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Miami University. Her work has been exhibited at national and international venues including Alice F. and Harris K. Weston Art Gallery in the Aronoff Center for the Arts\, Cincinnati\, OH; Urban Arts Space\, Ohio State University\, Columbus\, OH; Urban Institute of Contemporary Art\, Grand Rapids\, MI; Colorado State University\, Fort Collins\, CO; Seoul Art Center at Hangaram Museum and SOMA Drawing Center\, Seoul\, South Korea; and the University of West Bohemia\, Pilsen\, Czech Republic among others. DESCRIPTION:Nishiki Sugawara-Beda\n\nSeptember 27 – October 15\, 2022\nReception: October 7th\, 5-7PM\nStrata Gallery presents an Established Member solo exhibition\, Tidal Time by Dallas based artist Nishiki Sugawara-Beda. The exhibition opens September 17th and an artist reception will be held on October 7th from 5-7pm. \nNishiki Sugawara-Beda is a Japanese-American visual artist working primarily on painting. She draws upon her Japanese heritage to explore themes related to culture\, language\, and spirituality rooted in Zen Buddhism. Connecting across space and time\, she experiments in ancient Japanese materials and techniques including Sumi ink and Kakejiku landscapes to merge them with abstract and expressive forms familiar to the modern Western aesthetic. \nSugawara-Beda stated\, “the series of work\, KuroKuroShiro\, meaning black-black-white in Japanese\, offers internal landscape for all of us to wonder in and navigate through. I am fascinated with Sumi ink which allows me to connect me not only with my own cultural heritage but also with the land we stand on. I am thrilled to share my work with the Santa Fe Community!” \nSugawara-Beda exhibits her work nationally and internationally. Exhibition venues include Spartanburg Art Museum (SC)\, Morris Graves Museum of Art (CA)\, Dennos Museum (MI)\, Amos Eno Gallery (NY)\, Cris Worley Fine Arts (TX)\, and Asia and Europe. Her work appears in September’s American Poetry Review\, and has appeared in Poetry\, The Kenyon Review\, Virginia Quarterly Review\, Plough-shares\, AGNI\, The Southern Review and many other journals. An NEA Fellow and a “Discovery”/The Nation winner\, she is an editor at Plume and teaches poetry in Albuquerque. \nDonald Levering is the winner of the Tor House Robinson Jeffers Award\, the Carve Poetry Prize\, and the Literal Latte Poetry Award. His 16th book\, Breaking Down Familiar\, was published by Main Street Rag in 2022. His poems have appeared in American. \nLiterary Review\, Beloit Poetry Journal\, Bloomsbury Review\, Commonweal\, Hiram Poetry\, Southern Poetry Review\, and Valparaiso Review. DESCRIPTION:Julie England\, New Terrain\nSeptember 6 – September 24\nReception: September 9\, 5-7pm\nStrata Gallery presents established member solo exhibition New Terrain by Texas based artist\, Julie England. The exhibition opens September 6\, 2022 and is on view until September 24\, 2022. There is a public reception with the artist on Friday\, September 9\, 5:00-7:00pm. \nJulie’s paintings\, inspired by the outdoors\, especially arid terrain\, will be shown at Strata Gallery\, Santa Fe in September. England paints earth tones and saturated color with a sense of place\, imagination and yearning. She invites the viewer to travel through topology towards the horizon\, where earth melds with sky. \nOn one wall of Strata Gallery hang paintings with aerial perspective over Georgia O’Keeffe’s New Mexico properties. Discussions with the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe\, NM about photographing her sites led to this body of work. O’Keeffe’s Clouds Above Sky series from 1965\, where land observed through the airplane window was a most original pictorial idea\, is now commonplace. An aerial view enhances the viewer’s awareness of space and triggers one to immediately enter the foreground. \nThe opposing wall at Strata Gallery holds landscape paintings featuring color and mark-making that convey energy from nature. Paint gestures capture undulating surfaces enabling a sense of movement while standing still. \nJulie England is an oil painter who grew up in Wisconsin\, Florida and Texas.  Her artwork is exhibited in Texas and across the U.S. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University in Lubbock\, TX. After a career in the semiconductor industry\, England earned an Associates of Arts degree in 2015 at Brookhaven College\, Farmers Branch\, Texas. In 2018 she earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Art degree from Southern Methodist University\, Dallas\, Texas. Julie lives and works in the Dallas\, TX. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. The exhibition opens August 23rd\, with a special reception on August 26th from 5-7pm. \nJulia C. Martin’s work deals primarily with the topics of mortality\, ephemerality\, and time. She photographs in the land to explore these concepts. Roots will explore the body’s relationship to the earth and their tactile and intimate connection. \nMartin stated\, “I’m excited to be an Emerging Artist Member at Strata Gallery and to be a part of the Santa Fe art community. Having previously lived here\, I’ve always admired it. My work is about the relationship between the female body and the land. I’m interested in exploring how we perceive this connection and how the ephemeral nature of both the body and the land plays into the cycles of life\, death\, and rebirth. I work in a tactile manner and this exhibition will be just as much about the installation as it is about the images.” \nJulia C. Martin received her MFA in Photography from Arizona State University and her BA in Film & Photography from Montana State University. Her work has been exhibited and published nationally. DESCRIPTION:MEDITATIVE ART EXPERIENCE\nEvent Date: August 6\, 2022\nEvent Time: 12pm – 1pm \nAdmission is Free\, but seating is limited. Must register here to participate. \nStrata Gallery presents a meditative artmaking opportunity on Saturday\, August 6 from 12-1pm. A body-scan meditation will be led by two artists and students within the exhibition space. \nRaimy Engel (she/her) and Tess Bourbeau (they/them) are both attending the graduate art therapy program at Southwestern College and New Earth Institute. They are passionate about the role art can take in developing self-attunement\, empathy\, and mental health care. \nThe intention of this body-scan and art experiential is to allow for the exploration of the body outside of physical categories. Self-image may not always be related to looks/body shape and may include knowledge of bodily history and boundaries. “The goal is to promote exploration of the unseen relationship we have with our bodies\,” the two facilitators state. \nAttendees will be guided through a body-scan meditation that pauses occasionally for responsive artmaking. All supplies will be provided. Tess and Raimy would like to acknowledge that a body-scan can be an intense experience for those with bodily trauma and encourage any interested participants to attune to their nervous system and engage with this meditation in a way that feels safe. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday. DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY \nExhibition Dates: July 26 – August 20\, 2022\nReception: Friday\, July 29\, 5-8PM \nStrata Gallery presents its Second Annual Member Group Exhibition of all current Established and Emerging Artist members. \nAs an artist member 501c3 non-profit\, Strata Gallery seeks to showcase the work of internationally Established Artists whose development has typically followed trajectories tangential to prevalent avant-garde trends. It also showcases the work of promising Emerging Artists who may otherwise struggle for gallery exposure\, as their work is likewise at variance with those trends. The gallery encourages loose creative partnerships between and among these two groups. The membership is currently comprised of 16 established artists\, many drawn from university art departments across the country\, as well as 5 emerging artists. \nEstablished Artists include: Binod Shrestha\, Carlos Canul\, Cassandra Black\, David Olivant\, Grant Johnson\, Ira Greenberg\, Jane Shoenfeld\, Joomi Chung\, Julie England\, Lin Medlin\, Mary Vernon\, Millian Giang Pham\, Nishiki Sugawara-Beda\, Paul King\, Shelby Shadwell\, and Susan Stephenson. \nEmerging Artists include: Anna Rotty\, Julia C. Martin\, Rosalba Breazeale\, Adrian Aguirre\, and Tristyn Bustamante. \nMentorship is an integral part of Strata’s mission. Our Established Members share the expertise and knowledge they have gained through experience in their respective fields of study. DESCRIPTION:Discovering the Music of Paintings\, with Oliver Prezant and Friends\, Featuring the artwork of Mary Vernon\nSaturday\, July 9 at 2PM; Free admission\, registration required. \nStrata Gallery presents Discovering the Music of Paintings\, an interactive exploration and performance with Oliver Prezant and Friends\, featuring the artwork of Mary Vernon and improvising musicians Carla Kountoupes\, violin\, Jerry Weimer\, clarinet\, and Katie Harlow\, cello. The program will be presented on Saturday\, July 9\, at 2 p.m. Strata Gallery is located at 418 Cerrillos Road\, in the Design Center. \nHow does a painting sound? How do line and shape\, color and texture\, mood and compositional relationships translate into music? During the program\, arts educator and conductor Oliver Prezant will lead the audience in an interactive visual exploration of one of Mary Vernon’s colorful\, imaginative\, nine-foot wall paintings. Oliver and the musicians will then use the impressions of the audience and the elements of the painting to create a musical realization of the artwork\, using the painting as a musical score. \n“Mary’s a native New Mexican and a great artist\,” said Prezant. “Her work rides the line between the figurative and the abstract\, and it provides great opportunities for music making. And the gallery space at Strata is perfect for this kind of program\, very resonant\, and very intimate.” \n“Carla\, Jerry\, and Katie are some of my favorite musicians for this kind of special performance\,” he said. “Highly trained\, musically flexible\, and great improvisers. Vernon paints in ranges of natural and brilliant color with emotional intensity\, a sense of memory\, and wry humor. She sends our vision on trips through the structure of the painting – a quality she calls navigation. \nLarge works with surprising elements\nOn one wall of Strata Gallery\, three nine-foot paintings appear with intense color patterns punctuated by almost symbolic black elements – Petunia (reminiscent of Georgia O’Keefe’s black flowers)\, Mirror (reflecting the artist’s studio)\, and Dragonfly (an Ebony Jewelwing). The surfaces are Yupo\, Vernon’s favorite durable paper\, pinned to the wall. The opposing wall at Strata holds a number of the works Vernon is noted for – landscapes\, still-lives and collaged\, witty animals\, \n“Color navigates through any of these structures\,” Mary Vernon says\, “making space and asserting the presence of things awaiting our recognition.” \nArtist and Gallery\nMary Vernon is an emerita Professor of Art at Southern Methodist University. She taught painting and drawing\, and SMU’s noted color theory course. She was born in New Mexico\, educated at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and the University of New Mexico\, Albuquerque. DESCRIPTION:Toward A Post-Computational Practice\nJune 14 – July 2\, 2022\nReception: June 17\, 5-7PM \nStrata Gallery presents a solo exhibition\, Toward a Post-Computational Practice by artist Ira Greenberg\, currently working between Dallas\, TX and Santa Fe\, NM. The show opens on June 14\, with a special reception on June 17th from 5-7 pm. \nOver the past 30 years Ira Greenberg’s creative practice has meandered between the analog and digital. Formally trained as a painter (MFA\, Penn ‘92\, BFA\, Cornell ‘89) with a strong bias toward the observational\, his digital exploration began primarily to address very pragmatic concerns\, i.e.\, how to eat. For many years he intentionally tried to keep his practice(s) bifurcated: \nDigital = Utility | Analog = Wonderment \nSuch strategic bifurcation proved a failed strategy\, less so in that it didn’t work (he was able to eat)\, but more so\, as he explains\, “an inability of doing anything solely for utility\, regardless of the medium.” Over time his digital software application jockeying turned toward pure programming\, and he eventually abandoned any hope of maintaining control over his practice. His coding exploration resulted in 3 books on the Processing programming language and principles of creative coding\, as well as 2 National Science Foundation grants. \nThis exhibition collects artifacts from the last 5 years of Greenberg’s mucking about\, including drawings\, paintings\, 2D and 3D prints and generative (real-time code based) NFT’s. He describes his overall practice as Post-Computational\, including both the analog and digital work. \nIra Greenberg is Director and Professor of the Center of Creative Computation and holds appointments in the Divisions of Art\, Computer Science and Data Science\, all at SMU\, Dallas\, TX. The show opens on May 24\, with a special reception on May 27 from 5-7 pm. \nStraddled between two cultures\, Binod Shrestha’s research centers on our propensity for and contemplation on violence and the effects of violence in relation to notions of home\, displacement\, and identity. Shrestha’s work investigates body politics\, displacement\, and the transient nature of memory from a personal\, ritualistic\, and diasporic context. \nShrestha states\, “In my visual works\, the stories are not a literal retelling…I consider my role as an artist to bear witness to stories and\, through my work\, ask the audience to bear witness to the violence. A contemplation on the content of these stories is what I convey in my visual work through the mediums of objects\, drawing\, performance\, video\, and installation art.” \nBinod Shrestha received his MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts\, in Philadelphia and Bangalore University\, in India. Shrestha’s work has been recognized and funded by grants from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts Museum\, Minneapolis\, MN\, and the Art Matters Foundation. Shrestha’s work has been exhibited in the Minneapolis Art Museum\, MN\, Beijing Biennale\, China\, and venues across the US\, Nepal\, and India. DESCRIPTION:Reception Dates: Friday\, April 22nd 5-7PM\nExhibition Dates: April 19 – May 07\, 2022\nStrata Gallery presents Uneasy Abstraction\, a solo exhibition by Alabama based artist and educator Millian Giang Pham. The exhibition opens April 19th\, with a special reception on Friday April 22nd from 5-7pm. Attendees will have an opportunity to contribute toward a future cyanotype during the reception and or throughout the duration of the exhibition. \nMillian Pham’s art practice focuses on structures and barriers that oppress the body through visual abstraction and textual obfuscation. She uses visual art strategies to flip this on the viewer by creating visual puzzles through small embroideries and needlework. Since the answer to each composition is provided in the title of each work\, Pham’s works exist as a demonstration of perspectival shift rather than a challenge to solve; however\, the opportunity to solve each puzzle is still available by not looking up the answer. The exhibition contains some participatory components. \nMillian Pham stated\, “It’s been such an honor to work with the Strata Gallery staff and membership despite being in sweet home Alabama. I had the great opportunity to learn more about Santa Fe when I was a resident artist at the Santa Fe Art Institute this previous summer\, during which time I also learned more about and got on board with the mission of Strata Gallery. I’m excited to present my work to and working with the Santa Fe and surrounding community in this exhibition.” \nMillian Giang Pham received her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma and her MFA in Sculpture from the University of Florida in Gainesville\, Florida. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Studio Art – Foundations at Auburn University in Auburn\, Alabama. Her works have been exhibited throughout the United States and in Canada\, Korea\, and Pakistan. This exhibition opens April 5\, 2022\, with a special reception on Friday\, April 8th from 5-7PM and artist talk at 6PM. \nMercy Hawkins’ work seeks to reveal a new language\, expanding a lexicon of the possible\, as it relates to the sensorium of the living body\, both in and as the natural world. Working within a craft-based manipulation and assemblage of varied materials\, Hawkins pursues a return to a vital visual language\, imbued with a living\, responsive pulse of the world. Hawkins seeks to create work that is at once uncanny and unsettlingly alive. Creating forms and images of what we might encounter if language could return to its pre-literate origins\, an experience potentially weaving our bodies with the land. \nHawkins says of her work “I think of the creation of art like music through an instrument. I process the world around me through my body and invite my viewers to participate in a slow dance with the work. I seek to retune the senses and recenter ourselves to reencounter questions such as where are we really\, in relation to ourselves\, each other\, and the cosmos.” \nHawkins received her BA in from California State University\, Sacramento with a minor in History and received her MFA from University of California\, Davis in 2021. Presently she works at the Before Columbus Foundation in Oakland\, CA\, administrator of the American Book Award. She is currently a graduate fellow in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts\, Sausalito CA and is featured in New American Paintings #153\, MFA Annual.

I want it to take hold in the gut and expand in the imagination\, always giving in new ways. Working improvisationally\, my process is an intertwining of decades long experience\, reflections on the human condition and a philosophical core based in non-duality. While previously exhibiting in the city\, I’m grateful to Strata Gallery for providing my first solo exhibition in Santa Fe.” \nPaul King’s work is held in numerous private and public collections nationally and has been exhibited primarily on the east coast. DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY\nSusan Stephenson: Inside-Outside\nFebruary 22 – March 12\, 2022\nReception: Friday\, February 25\, 2022\, 5-7PM \nStrata Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Established Member Susan Stephenson\, titled Susan Stephenson: Inside-Outside. \nBest known for the panoramic oil paintings she develops on-site\, Susan Stephenson transforms scenery from everyday life through an exploration of color and light. Determined in her practice of working from direct observation as much as possible\, she embraces the contemporary world by responding to it in the most primal means she knows: she paints it in oils. Inspired by traffic lights\, stop signs\, or how sunlight hits the “do not pass” lines in the road\, she navigates a line between attraction and unease – torn between lovely places that appeal to everyone and other locations deemed “un-paintable.” \nShe writes\, “Instead of pretending that electric lines are nonexistent\, I use them to break the sky into visual patterns\, letting them catch the light and become orange against the blue arc of the atmosphere. Every day\, people are bombarded with chances to see beauty in the mundane yet sleepwalk past them. Rather than wait a hundred years for our culture to look back wistfully at some of the things we currently overlook\, I prefer to show their beauty right now – why wait?” \nStephenson’s easy relationship with curvilinear perspective is partly due to growing up in a geodesic dome in her native Louisiana; after using the wraparound view for so many years\, it now permeates her work. Similarly\, the spatial relationships of landscape now define everything she develops\, regardless of genre. This distinctive viewpoint is on display in the works on exhibit in Strata Gallery\, an exhibition that includes artworks showing outdoor views as well as those developed indoors. \nWith a BFA from Louisiana Tech University and her MFA from Boston University\, she lived in southern New England for over twenty years\, dividing her time between teaching and painting. SUMMARY:Sacred Wound
DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY \nReception: Tuesday\, February 08\, 2022\, 5-7PM\nExhibition: February 8 -19\, 2022 \nSacred Wound features installation work derived from a multidisciplinary practice addressing issues of illness and the body. In this show\, paper is utilized as both primary materials and as metaphor for the body. Crumpled\, folded\, torn\, eroded\, splattered\, soaked\, dyed\, dissolved\, baptized\, stapled\, compacted\, flued\, and reshaped – paper undergoes multiple cycles of fragmentation and reformation. These transformations give rise to surfaces and forms evocative of and shifting between palimpsest and skin\, flower and viscera\, and volcanic rock and bodily organ. \nPhillip Byrne stated in a recent interview\, “I’m so excited to be an emerging artist at Strata Gallery and grateful for the opportunity to hold my first ever solo exhibition here. I am interested in exploring bodily boundaries in my work; however\, it is really the absence of bodily boundaries that interests me. I am fascinated by permeability – how the world seeps into the body and the body seeps into the world. During the creation of this work\, I have been meditating on the ways in which illness dissolves and transforms the body’s boundaries\, and how wounds can act as forces of both unraveling and dissolution as well as growth and change.” \nPhillip Byrne received a BA in Studio Art from CSU Stanislaus and is currently an MFA candidate at UC Davis.

(He will be conducting a workshop on writing poems about art (ekphrasis) at SF Community College Visual Arts Gallery on February 11th.) \nThe Reading will include images of the art that prompted the poems being read. Utilizing a wide range of materials\, each artist explores complex themes of identity\, time\, human connection\, and the environment. \nExamples include collagraph on paper\, curb chunks and brick by Robbie Sugg; fritted screen-print layers on sandblasted kiln-formed glass by Alex Younger; handmade grass-paper sewn together with the artist’s hair by Julia C. Martin; and a silver gelatin print made from a cliché verre negative by Daniel Hojnacki. \nOther artworks include Jack Crouch’s hilarious take on Jacques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps and Andrés de Varona’s Access\, which continues the existential probing that made him one of Southwest Contemporary’s “12 New Mexico Artists to Know Now” and saw a full feature on his work in Pasatiempo. Julia C. Martin\, also featured in Southwest Contemporary\, fuses figures and environment with her works. Jenny Balisle’s Danger Owner-Operator Controlled Vaginas\, molded acrylic imitation caution signs\, makes witty\, incisive asides on gender issues. In a gentler mode\, Rosalba Breazeale’s ephemeral chemilumen photographic prints will continue to develop through prolonged exposure to light. \nThrough their chosen materials\, each artist’s work acts as a conduit to complex ideas and relationships that challenge the viewer and create new pathways for deeper learning\, relating\, and understanding. DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY\nExhibition: Mind the Gap\nArtists: David Olivant\, Jennifer Van\nDates: November 30 – December 18\, 2021\nReception: December 03\, 2021 \nMind the Gap\nStrata Gallery presents its first two-person exhibition\, Mind the Gap by New Mexico based artists David Olivant and Jennifer Van. The exhibition runs from November 30 – December 18\, with a special reception on December 3 from 5-7pm. \nMind the Gap is Strata Gallery’s first two-person exhibition to showcase an established and an emerging artist together and in dialog. David Olivant’s Retrogylphs reinvent characters and imagery from earlier sculptures and assemblages. Jennifer Van’s photography centers on emotional expression and the human form. \nWhile on the surface the artwork is quite different\, each artist is deeply concerned with the expression and communication of nuanced emotional states filtered through diverse perspectives. Together these works explore the fraught dynamics of human contact and the nature of the interpersonal “gap” that humans constantly have to “mind”. \nDavid Olivant is a native of England and got his MA from the Royal College of Art in London. After three years living in New Delhi in the mid-eighties where he had his first solo exhibition he moved to the US. Since then\, he has shown in NYC\, Chicago\, LA\, Fresno\, Santa Fe and Davis. \nJennifer Van received her BFA in Graphic Arts and a BA in Art History from California State University Stanislaus. Her work has been exhibited in California and New Mexico. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday. DESCRIPTION:STRATA GALLERY\nExhibition: Along for the Ride\nArtist: Rachel Taylor\nDates: November 09 – November 20\, 2021\nReception: November 12\, 5-7PM \nStrata Gallery presents its second Emerging Member solo exhibition\, Along for the Ride by New Mexico based artist Rachel Taylor. The exhibition run from November 9 to November 20 \, with a special reception on November 12th from 5-7 pm. \nRachel Taylor’s relationship to the physical use of paint and drawing materials informs the content of her work. Taylor uses acrylic paint to depict both fluid and plastic forms. Varying marks on the surface form mutual relationships that characterize the spaces they inhabit. She focuses on reworking\, organizing\, transforming\, and animating the surface of a painting with careful consideration of illusionistic depth. \nRachel Taylor stated\, “It feels wonderful to be an emerging artist at Strata gallery. My process consists of a call and response between deliberate and unintentional marks on a surface. I rely on chance and intuition\, and where they pause between the known and chaos. These playful and imperfect environments emerge from the emotional impact and resonance of personal experience. I also view these energetic\, vulnerable\, and fluid spaces as reflections of an interior life. They refer to pleasure\, tactility\, and desire through a close relationship and proximity to the body.” \nRachel Taylor received an MFA from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque\, New Mexico. She had her first solo show at Ed. Varie in New York City in 2020 and has participated in residencies such as the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson\, Vermont\, and SOMA Summer 2019 in Mexico City\, Mexico. Rachel Taylor is currently pursuing an MA in Communications and Journalism at the University of New Mexico. \nStrata Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday.
