SUMMARY:Reynier Llanes: What is Essential is Invisible to the Eye
DESCRIPTION:The Butler Institute of American Art at 524 Wick Avenue in Youngstown\, Ohio is excited to exhibit the most recent collection of paintings by Reynier Llanes\, one of the most complex and lucid artists of his generation. Reynier Llanes: What is Essential is Invisible to the Eye will open September 4 and will be on view in The Butler’s Finnegan/Hynes Gallery through October 9 of this year. \nThis new exhibition of powerful artworks painted in the Cuban tradition of narrative symbolism\, transmutes the raw emotion of life experience into visual imagery that beckons the viewer to look deeper into the impact of relationships with an instinctive vulnerability. Inspired by the children’s book\, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry\, What is Essential is Invisible to the Eye embodies the idea of childlike adventures while it touches on serious social issues as well. \nVisitors can view the exhibition during The Butler’s regular public hours: Tuesday through Saturday\, from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.; Sunday\, noon to 4:00 P.M. The Butler is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. \nA public Meet-the-Artist Reception is scheduled for September 18 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. \nIn celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month\, on the morning of September 20th\, the museum will host a private workshop for children from predominantly Hispanic-speaking schools. At 2:00pm on September 20th\, Llanes will present a talk to the general public.

SUMMARY:Francie Lyshak: Inner Life - Reception for the Artist
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the history of art\, but especially in the last 150 years or so\, there have been numerous painters whose works have been either inspired by dreams or carry a dreamlike resonance. One thinks of French Symbolists like Gustave Moreau or the fiercely original Henri Rousseau or any number of Surrealists who claimed to be guided by the promptings of the unconscious. Improbable events take place in unusual settings. A fiddler plays by firelight at the edge of gently roaring surf. A newly wedded couple floats in a small boat\, navigating choppy waters filled with seals\, dolphins\, and what look to be aquatic dinosaurs. Francie Lyshak’s paintings from this show\, most from a roughly ten-year period in the late 1980s and mid-90s\, share the same qualities of enchantment and surprise—a certain dreaminess\, if you will—that animates works by Rousseau or even Marc Chagall.
