DESCRIPTION:Our virtual Art in Focus series continues with the engraving of the Massacre of the Innocents\, a product of the collaboration between the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael and the printmaker Marcantonio Raimondi. The engraving depicts a violent dance of twisting\, straining bodies. But how can we know the unseen – the histories\, the stories\, the names of a people that were undocumented or erased? \nArturo Lindsay\, 2010 \nI asked myself that question late one evening as I looked at the sun setting behind the hills on the bay of Portobelo. The view from my studio faces the ruins of a dock that was\, at one time\, the first encounter with tierra firme for many weary\, shackled and enslaved black feet whose journey began months earlier in Africa. \nThe setting sun in Portobelo reflects off the cerulean blue sky and puffy white clouds onto the still waters of the bay producing a rather unique effect of light that seemingly glows from beneath the surface of the water. I wondered that evening … could this light be the souls of the children who perished at sea? \nThe following morning\, I began imagining and imaging the anonymous faces of the children who perished during the middle passage of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. \nSo began my journey to see their faces\, to hear their stories\, their names and their laughter. Exhibition curator Michelle DiMarzo\, PhD\, will present an opening lecture at 5 p.m. in Bellarmine Hall’s Diffley Board Room. This event will be livestreamed on thequicklive.com. \nAbout the Exhibition: This exhibition presents a group of woodcuts\, engravings\, and etchings from the late 15th through late 18th centuries drawn from the Wetmore Collection at Connecticut College. The collection was assembled in the early 20th century by New London\, CT native Fanny Wetmore\, and bequeathed to the College in 1930. \nAlthough little is known of Wetmore herself\, her collecting activities place her within a tradition dating back to the rise of printmaking in early modern Europe. The surging production of prints by the beginning of the 16th century represented a sea change for both artists and consumers. For artists\, prints provided additional revenue\, increased their personal fame\, and offered greater latitude for experimentation outside the traditional patronage structure. For consumers\, prints represented access to visual art on an unprecedented scale; even those who would never have been able to commission an independent work from a great artist could now readily obtain an engraving or an etching. Prints were easily transported\, could be pasted up on walls or into albums\, and even large collections of them took up relatively little room. And\, with the rise of reproductive printmaking\, even geographically distant or physically inaccessible artworks could be added to the collector’s “paper museum.” \nThis exhibition is the second in the Museum’s history to have been co-curated with Fairfield University students\, and has been supported by generous funding from the Samuel H. SUMMARY:Discovering Your Creative Photographic Path Remote Learning
DESCRIPTION:These Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nMost beginning photographers tend to randomly capture images of everything they see and experience\, resulting in confusing portfolios of single photographs and a lack of strong intellectual and aesthetical bodies of work. This intensive 3-weeks workshop is designed to encourage all students to find their unique creative voices\, resulting in solid directions for the future and applicable projects for everyone regardless of experience. \nCreative photography is a process\, one that utilizes a simple approach to establishing photography projects\, otherwise known as concepts. Four keywords\, WHY\, WHAT\, HOW and WHO serve as the foundation in forming intellectually and aesthetically resolved bodies of fine artwork. Finding your own creative voice is the result of applying this simple method to your photography projects\, not an elusive born talent\, but rather a process that involves writing simple artist statements\, researching a particular subject matter or techniques and experimenting with the aesthetics of an idea\, your idea. After an initial review of images\, each student will be encouraged to pursue a single idea or project\, resulting in a fully resolved mini body of work by the end of the workshop. Sequencing of images\, simple artist statements and presentation ideas will be explored throughout.

DESCRIPTION:These Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nJoin award-winning fine art photographer Scott Bolendz for a crash course into the world of digital black and white photography.  In this 3-hour workshop\, students will review the core fundamentals of what makes a strong\, compelling black and white image (with many examples!)\, explore different types of monochromatic photography\, and also learn about the creative role and application of dodging and burning techniques\, vignettes\, textures\, high contrast and soft-focus features. \nThis course is designed for users of both smartphone and digital cameras.  Students will learn how to capture images directly in black and white on their smartphones with specialized apps\, learn how to convert color images into monochrome\, and also explore state of the art black and white photo editing software for both smartphone AND computer-based post-production workflows. \nThere will be live classroom demonstrations where students will have an opportunity to see their own images being processed during group learning experiences (students should bring several images each on a smartphone or thumb drive).  There will be limited seating for this class\, so be sure to sign up early and consider bringing a friend to receive discounted pricing.

DESCRIPTION:These Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nWe all have a story to tell\, a legacy or statement\, a call to action\, a declaration of what you believe\, what makes you mad or happy\, your unique observations of the world around you\, your life itself with its peaks and valleys. The medium of photography makes it possible to tell your story and sometimes make a change. A picture tells a thousand words. Several pictures correctly sequenced tell a full story – your individual story. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn the art of telling a story through creating a visual narrative. Multiple images have the power of expressing thoughts\, ideas\, experiences and beliefs in a linear format. Storyboarding and careful sequencing of photographs following a clear concept\, your unique voice and communications to the outside world\, using many case studies and background information on the starting point of any project: The Why\, What\, Who\, and How. \nWe all have a unique story to share with others\, it can be a powerful and quiet voice\, but we have a responsibility to tell our stories as part of our background\, culture\, legacy and circumstances. The power of words through titles or series’ names are also explored\, rounding up to a full story.

DESCRIPTION:These Zoom sessions will fully reflect the same content as with the on-ground workshops offered by the FMoPA institute. \nAdobe Photoshop is a digital photo-editing program commonly referred to as the Digital Darkroom. It allows you to push the boundaries of digital editing and is widely used by professionals\, emerging photographers and artists. Within this 4-hour workshop\, you will encounter the useful camera raw function through the Adobe Raw Interface\, resizing and saving your images in different formats\, the basic tools for retouching spots\, dust and flaws and how to work with layers and color corrections. This course is designed for photographers who want to establish a sound foundation with processing their images through an in-depth software program but without the complexities of learning every aspect of this technology.\nRequirements: Attendee’s must have the current PS Software and a laptop.
