Eye Lounge is pleased to present Surface Studies, an exhibition of new work by Amy Sansbury Manning. In her first solo show at Eye Lounge, she presents a series of ceramic paintings that repeat a simple graphic motif to explore the medium’s range. The exhibition will be on view through January 10, 2021, with an artist demonstration outside the gallery on Sunday, December 27.

The work in this exhibition explores how ceramic surfaces are created by the material properties of the medium and the processes of mark-making. They iterate through a wide range of mark-making techniques: incising lines and shapes into wet clay; drawing with different brushes; building up textured surfaces with slip and glaze; and creating color with slip, glaze, underglaze, metal oxides, and ceramic stains. As she works, Manning constantly asks herself “what if …?” The multiple tiles and panels invite comparisons and contrasts between the results of these experiments.
