August-October Exhibitions Virtual Opening

August 30, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Artspace, a non-profit gallery for the visual and performing arts located in Manchester, announces three new exhibitions that will be installed and open to the public from September 3 to October 16, 2020. A virtual opening will be livestreamed on Facebook (Artspace Richmond) on Sunday, August 30, 2020, at 7 PM. Exhibitions for August-October feature work by Cristin Millett, Lisa DeLoria Weinblatt, and a group exhibition by Artspace Artist Members.

Cristin Millett’s sculpture installation, Coronal Plane, “is the culmination of Millett’s research on the anatomical theater at the University of Padua built-in 1594, the oldest surviving anatomy theater in the world.” This installation includes sections which “dissect” the room in reference to the theater’s architecture. In the center, Millett has created a dissection table titled, Transection of the Anatomical Planes. The installation provides “allusions to Catholic confessionals and kneeling benches…invites the viewer to question the contradictory stance between dissections performed for medical education and dissections completed in order to disperse sacred remains for widespread worship.”

Cristin Millett utilizes advances in digital technology, stone carving, bronze casting, and her own research on the history of medicine to cultivate installations that, in return, critique and discuss societal issues like reproduction and gender identity. Millett was recently awarded a Fulbright to the University of Western Australia where she is an artist in residence at SymbioticA, an artistic laboratory dedicated to research and hands-on engagement with the life sciences. She is working towards creating her next piece of artwork titled, Ex-Utero, with the goal to create conversations on the socio-cultural impact of the development of embryos in artificial conditions outside the uterus.

Lisa DeLoria Weinblatt’s painting installation, As We Are, “is a pictorial essay of contemporary student life, in real educational settings. Contemporary cross-cultural issues and their emotional attitudes are explored in the shared experience of school lunch.” The SCHOOL LUNCH series of 10 paintings is based on real interactions and people observed by Weinblatt. In this series, Weinblatt “underlines perceptions which affirm cultural identity, brings together ideas espousing contemporary social justice, gender and political concerns while encouraging a belief in the quality of human spirit.”

Lisa DeLoria Weinblatt is a painter living and working in New York City. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Queens College before completing a Masters of Fine Art at the School of Visual Arts. Lisa has received six Artist-In-Residence scholarships. SCHOOL LUNCH, as well as her other painting series, A MAN / A WOMAN, has been shown in over 40 solo shows and more than 200 group exhibitions. Lisa has been awarded with the Grumbacher Gold Medal and a lifetime achievement award from the “Who’s Who of American Women.”

Artspace Artist Members will present artwork in a variety of media in an exhibition titled “Needs and Wants.”
