In a New Light: Paintings from the Yale Center for British Art

March 24, 2023 - December 3, 2023

Free

In a New Light: Paintings from the Yale Center for British Art presents a selection of YCBA artworks in the Yale University Art Gallery’s Louis Kahn building while the YCBA’s own iconic Kahn building is closed for its next phase of conservation. The nearly sixty works on view span four centuries of British landscape and portraiture traditions. Highlights include Joseph Mallord William Turner’s Dort or Dordrecht: The Dort Packet-Boat from Rotterdam Becalmed (1818); several of John Constable’s atmospheric Cloud Studies (1821–25); James McNeill Whistler’s Nocturne in Blue and Silver (1872–78); and Francis Bacon’s Study of a Head (1952). The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see these and other artworks from the YCBA’s collection in a new setting, yet one that—like the YCBA itself—displays the notable elements of Kahn’s simple but elegant museum architecture: basic geometric forms, natural materials in muted palettes, and galleries filled with diffuse daylight.
