In Rosenthal’s recent pictures, imagined motifs of hilly land, architectural columns, human figures, and arrangements of jars or vases proliferate in rhythms and tensions, drift opposed to plunge, multitudes of lines opposed to the singular, defining contour. At the root of these compositions in gouache or oil is the artist’s longstanding pursuit of form, recently in Islamic stone carving, Roman twisted columns, the shape of human solitude in a large landscape, the plain, curt words of Wallace Stevens in his “Anecdote of the Jar”:

“I placed a jar in Tennessee

And round it was, upon a hill.

It made the slovenly wilderness

Surround that hill.”   (excerpt)

Rosenthal’s work has been praised in the pages of The New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, The New Yorker, Modern Painters, artcritical.com, and Art in America, among other publications. Her work has been shown in New York at the Ingber Gallery, Steven Harvey Fine Art, Lori Bookstein Gallery, and at university galleries nationwide. Now Professor Emerita of Fine Arts at Rider University, she has taught at many institutions including the Kansas City Art Institute, the New York

Studio School, Queens College (CUNY) Graduate program, and the Chautauqua

Institution. Her writing on art for numerous publications won her an NEA
Critic’s Traveling Fellowship, and she was the founding editor of Artists and Art, an art-book series for Arcade Publishing.  Two stained-glass windows of her design are in the Ansche Chesed synagogue in New York. Her paintings, drawings, and prints are in public and private collections in the US and abroad.
