Join us at Tandem Press for a conversation between Judy Pfaff and Tandem Director, Katie Geha. The two will discuss Pfaff’s years-long collaboration with Tandem, how printmaking informs her sculptural practice, and the ways experimentation across media continues to shape her work. Offering a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective, this conversation will explore process, risk, and the evolving possibilities of print.
Judy Pfaff (b. 1946, London, England) is widely recognized as a pioneer of installation art. Her expansive practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, often realized in immersive works described as “painting in space.” She received her BFA from Washington University, her MFA from Yale University, and an Honorary Doctorate from Pratt Institute.
Since the 1970s, Pfaff has worked fluidly across two- and three-dimensional forms, creating dynamic, large-scale installations that are frequently site-specific and temporary. Her prints echo this sensibility, with layered, organic forms and hand-applied elements that lend a sculptural quality to the surface. Pfaff is the recipient of numerous honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the International Sculpture Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Her work has been featured in multiple Whitney Biennials and is held in major museum collections worldwide. She lives and works in Tivoli, New York.
