Kamini Avril: Fables
September 3-28, 2019
Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 11-6
Opening Reception: September 5, 5 – 8
Kamini Avril’s recent works are dreamlike visions. The images arise from spontaneous, energetic painting interwoven with slow reflection. Like fables, these paintings allude to events or occurrences with a portent. But if there is a moral, it will only be known by the individual. Offering no answers, they instead confront us with the enigma of our moment in the face of eternity.
Avril has moved through different methods and materials over the years, ranging from gestural abstraction to direct observation of life and “realism”. Throughout, drawing has remained an important process for building trust in the intelligence of the body, the meaningfulness of the unconscious, and the playfulness of the mind. To merge painting and drawing, interior and exterior perception, not-knowing and decision making has been a lifelong goal.
This is Avril’s second solo show at Bowery Gallery. She has exhibited at the Schick Art Gallery, Skidmore College, Maris College Art Gallery, the Oxbow Gallery, Northampton, MA and in Kochin, India. She has taught painting, fresco and drawing at the New York Studio School and at Bard College. Her work is in collections worldwide.
