OPENING CELEBRATION:

ARTISTS’ TALK:

Saturday, October 4, 3-5PM

Atlantic Gallery is pleased to announce the two-person exhibition, Mary Elmer-Dewitt and Janie Samuels, on view from September 30 – October 18, 2025. An opening reception will be held for the artists on Thursday, October 2, from 6:00-8:00 pm. There is an artist talk scheduled for Saturday, October 4, 3-5pm.

Mary Elmer-DeWitt explores the connections between her own studio work and that of her mother and grandmothers. The show features collaborations between the artist and her relatives and invites viewers to trace the links between the artist’s past influences and her present body of work.

Mary Elmer-DeWitt is a native New Yorker who currently lives in Brooklyn. She is a graduate of NYU and Pratt Institute where she has been a professor in the Art and Design Education Department since 2004. Her work has recently been exhibited at The Drawing Rooms, The National Collage Society and 440 Gallery. She is a member of Atlantic Gallery and the Park Slope Windsor Terrace Artists group.

Janie Samuels’ work has always dealt with “humanity,” a concern she believes has heightened relevance as we become more inured to technology, desensitizing us, and distancing us from direct personal interaction. Less overtly political than much of her past imagery depicting refugees and immigrants, this body of work celebrates the diversity of everyday life in Brooklyn and is offered as an antidote to the current societal climate.

Originally from New York’s Finger Lakes region, Janie Samuels has lived in New York since the age of 10, receiving her BA from Bennington College and her MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She has participated in over 90 exhibitions nationally and internationally. She is the former President of a Brooklyn based artist consortium, the Park Slope Windsor Terrace Artists, and is a member of Atlantic Gallery.
