Pulling Down the Heavens

November 17, 2020 @ 8:00 am - November 30, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

Free

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Pulling Down the Heavens,” an exhibition of animations, videos and digital paintings by MFA Computer Arts students and alumni. Curated by the program’s assistant to the chair, India Lombardi-Bello, and director of operations, Angelica Vergel, the exhibition will be on view from Tuesday, November 17, through Monday, November 30, online at galleries.sva.edu.

The artists included in “Pulling Down the Heavens” are searching for quiet moments of reflection in an increasingly chaotic world. Through meditation and rumination, they create a space for the audience to rediscover clarity and tranquility in the face of adversity.

Current student Juan David Figueroa‘s digital animation How Did I Get Here? acts as a pixelated map of human progress, conveying how small human acts can have enormous societal impacts.

Kelsie Hoffman‘s (MFA 2020 Computer Arts) video Sunrise_06_07 mesmerizes as an orb turns and ripples, creating an illusion of space and tranquility.

Current student Linda Loh‘s video Adventures in Nurbland Forest Red is sourced from photographs of light and landscapes. These elements are distorted in a way that makes them feel familiar and unfamiliar at once.

Yalan Wen‘s (MFA 2020 Computer Arts) digital painting A Slice of Time and Rivers is sourced from the movement of the East River in New York City. The hypnotic ascension of the image replicates the undulating nature of water and memory.

Artists in this exhibition also include current MFA Computer Arts students Daiqi CuiDiego GuanzonYunxi Guo and Claudia Tay; and alumni Matthew Rinehart (2020) and Linyazhi Xiang (2020).
