Re: Seeing approaches how we see others and the world around us. Curated by Gallery 110 Director Shayley Timm and featuring all local Seattle artists, each piece expresses a subtle outcry to either see the artist as who they are or to see the alternate world they’ve provided.
The work in Re: Seeing asks viewers simply, what about this. Walking through each existence invites us to not only acknowledge any implicit bias we carry, but to also challenge assumptions upon walking in the door. Deeply personal, each artist offers witnesses a chance to see their whole person as who they really are or a landscape of what they envision. The work is created for you just as much as it is for them.
Featuring all Seattle artists, Re: Seeing helps realize alternate structures and additionally gives voice and visibility to the artist and their goal. Pieces that imagine an equal approach or different structures sit proudly next to paintings and photographs that invite presence in the eyes that see them as who they are.
The show provides a vulnerable opportunity to separate our minds from what we see and calm our everyday social identities. Timm’s motivation on truly seeing and imagining alternate existences comes from her passion for storytelling and equity as well as a through line of what if, present in many of the artists she’s had the privilege to work with. She also aims to offer a unique connection between patrons and the artist, one that is often blurry, nonexistent, or transactional. Each artist presents unfiltered self portraits, landscapes, social commentary, and more. Come meet them and their vision.
