#TandemTakeover | Swoon
June 11, 2020 - July 31, 2020
While the Tandem Press staff have been working from home, we recently started a new project on our social media accounts: the #TandemTakeover! Each week, one staff member has been taking over the reins of our Instagram and Facebook accounts to highlight and share insights about editions created at Tandem Press. We’d like to share a few of the great selections here, but follow us on Instagram @uwtandempress and Facebook @TandemPress to see what else the staff has picked.
Image: Swoon, George, 2020. Lithography, screen print, gold leaf, colored silver leaf, metal leaf, hand painting, and collage on wood. Varied edition of 18. 27 x 23 x 1 1/2 inches. $8,500 unframed (edition in production).
Selected by Sona Pastel-Daneshgar, Curator:
Swoon (Caledonia “Callie” Curry) is an artist, humanitarian, and social activist whose art practice includes drawing, paper cutting, printmaking, animation, and immersive sculptural installations. Primarily known for compelling and tender portraits, her subjects include friends, family, and people she has met throughout her life.
George is a portrait of a man Callie met while leading an arts therapy workshop with Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Restorative Justice Program. One day the group was asked to select an animal they felt represented them. George picked stingrays because he felt they had something in common: that they are perceived as scary and dangerous, but in actuality are very sweet and docile. Following their conversation, Callie created a beautiful portrait of George surrounded by a radiating ring of stingrays. She has recreated the portrait in a variety of projects, and he has become one of her most recognizable subjects. We are excited to be working on a sculptural edition of George in our studio – visit the complete post about this piece on Instagram for more photos of the project.
