Material Meditations
September 1, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - October 1, 2022 @ 5:00 pm
FreeArtist Greg Pierce has always held a fascination with the transformation of materials in different states of decay and breakdown. “Material Meditations” is an aesthetic exploration of structural integrity affected by entropic forces in nature.
When fortunate, one stumbles across an object in the environment that has a particular aesthetic resonance. Erosional elements such as water, insects, wind, and ice alter an object’s structural integrity and softens features in a manner that captivates imagination. In a similar fashion, the processes Pierce uses to create his sculpture also displays similar entropic features of fluidity and erosion that echo nature.
In Material Meditations, Pierce has chosen small objects of eroded wood, bone, metal, and stone with just such qualities. Some objects are totemic, while others engage in dialogue with the abstracted landscape structures that Pierce often constructs by fusing local rock materials with clay and recycled glass. In each piece there’s a palpable tension and energy that emanates from the dialectic between the embedded found object and the constructed fused sculptural landscape. Additionally, there will be a selection of artwork from one of his previous exhibitions that will act as an evolution to his most recent pieces.
