The Narrative Scale

October 19, 2020 @ 8:00 am - November 14, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

Free

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “The Narrative Scale,” a juried exhibition of multidisciplinary works by SVA students. Organized by SVA Galleries, the exhibition will be on view online from Monday, October 19, through Monday, November 14, at galleries.sva.edu.

The histories we keep lie somewhere between reality and how it is observed. In this exhibition, artists examine the past, from a year’s worth of mundane daily routines to family relationships to the history of policy-making decisions that are affecting communities today. Their works plot points between experiences and accounts. Together they create a scale that spans narrative, from fiction to fact. They remind us that while what we see isn’t always reality and what we hear isn’t always the truth, everyone’s experiences are equally vital and real for those who live them.

Artists featured in this exhibition are Edward Gia (BFA Photography and Video), Yawen Erin Huang (MFA Fine Arts), Eonnam Kim (BFA Photography and Video), Emmanuel Massillon (BFA Fine Arts), Huiqi Qiu (MFA Design), Hanying Shi (BFA Fine Arts), Zhihan Wang (BFA Illustration), Jin Yan (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media) and Huaiyu Zhang (BFA Photography and Video).

Juried exhibitions are a way for SVA students to recognize the achievements of their most distinguished classmates. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to the annual SVA Galleries call for entries, whose submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements.
