Seward Johnson Atelier

Charitable and educational organization dedicated to providing exhibitions and contemporary landmark public artworks for communities. Collection on view in urban centers, small towns, regional parks, and cultural institutions worldwide.

The Seward Johnson Atelier curates and travels exhibitions of sculptures by artist Seward Johnson throughout the United States and overseas. A typical exhibition might include fifteen to twenty life-scale figures sited along boulevards and in parks. These sculptures, placed in the path of daily life, allow everyone in the community to interact with art and to share a common experience of discovery. The bronzes are a tactile delight with meticulous textures, surprising details, and they all feature Seward Johnson’s hallmark touch of humor. Monumental-scale sculptures, installed by our professional team, also tour internationally.

Seward Johnson’s sculptures have been turning heads and causing conversation for nearly fifty years. More than four hundred of Johnson’s life-size cast bronze figures have been featured globally in private collections and museums. Most recognizable are the series: Celebrating the Familiar featuring “man on the street” figures involved in everyday activities, Beyond the Frame, inspired by the Impressionist masterworks, and Icons Revisited, the series that focuses on limescale bronzes in homage to images from our historic and popular culture. Johnson has enlarged a select group of sculptures into monumental scale. To date these twenty to thirty foot tall presences have been on exhibition, or been purchased for permanent display, in the United States and overseas. Most notable are Embracing Peace in Times Square, Rome and Normandy, France, and the dramatic Forever Marilyn in Chicago, Palm Springs, Australia and China. Seward Johnson’s impact on the world of public sculpture has altered and enhanced the landscape as well as the dialogue about art in the public realm.

The Seward Johnson Atelier is the exclusive source for acquiring limited editions of Johnson’s life scale and monumental work. All proceeds support the Foundation.
